Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who hit number one in the UK charts in 1969 with their only hit single "Something In The Air"?

Answer: Thunderclap Newman

Pete Townshend, legendary guitarist for The Who, played bass for Thunderclap Newman under the alias Bijou Drains. The band was formed to showcase this one song, written bya roadie for The Who, John "Speedy" Keen who did the vocals and played drums on it. Thunderclap Newman was the piano player for the band.
2. Which UK preschool kids TV show ran for 25 years and featured Zippy, Bungle the bear and George the hippo and became cult viewing for many adults?

Answer: Rainbow

"Rainbow" ran from 1972 to 1997. It helped kids with language and number skills using short sketches and repetitive songs. Long time presenter Geoffrey Hayes attempted to keep the puppets in order with help from musical group Rod, Jane and Freddy. There is a famous Christmas tape made by the show, but never aired, known as the "Twangers Episode" which features the puppets performing "Carry On" style humour.
3. In J. D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher In The Rye", what is the name of the $5 prostitute that goes to Holden's room in the Edmont hotel?

Answer: Sunny

The elevator attendant sends Sunny to Holden's room and although she removes her dress and attempts to seduce him, he declines sex, saying he can't as he has just had an operation on his clavichord. The actual reason is because she is so young, "young as hell" according to Holden and is obviously forced into prostitution, making Holden consider her as an individual not just a prostitute.
4. Which beer in 2008 was deemed the biggest-selling in terms of volume in the world?

Answer: Snow

Snow is only sold in China, but in 2008 it overtook Bud Light as the biggest selling beer. It costs the equivalent of 49 cents for 330ml in 2018, but as one consumer reported, "some beers you buy because they taste great and others you buy because they are cheap. Snow fills the latter category quite nicely."

5. Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis have both had their jersey numbers retired by which North American sports team?

Answer: Tampa Bay Lightning

Lecavalier and St. Louis were team captains before Steven Stamkos took over the role in 2014 and both played in the 2004 Stanley Cup finals when the Lightning defeated Calgary Flames 4-3. Boston Storm are a women's lacrosse team, Trenton Thunder play minor league baseball, and Phoenix Suns play in the NBA.
6. Walter C. Dewhurst, played by Brian Wilde, was known by which nickname in the long running BBC sitcom "Last Of The Summer Wine"?

Answer: Foggy

Brian Wilde had many small roles, such as parts in "Hancock's Half Hour", "Carry On Doctor" and "Elizabeth R" before striking gold as prison warder Mr. Barrowclough in "Porridge" alongside Ronnie Barker. While still in "Porridge", he won the role of Foggy Dewhurst in "Last Of The Summer Wine" and played this part from 1976-1985, returning to the show in 1990 and continuing to 1997, and retiring at 70 years old.
7. Stephanie Clifford was much in the news at the start of 2018 regarding a relationship she may have had with a world leader. How is she better known in the adult movie world?

Answer: Stormy Daniels

Daniels has won adult movie awards both as a performer and director and has also appeared in the video for "Wake Up Call" by Maroon 5 as well as in Steve Carell movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin". In March 2018, she filed a lawsuit against President Trump, claiming that the nondisclosure agreement she had signed regarding their alleged affair never came into effect because Trump never signed it.
8. Which rum-based drink is believed to have been invented in New Orleans by Pat O'Brien?

Answer: Hurricane

The story goes that due to difficulties importing scotch during World War II, bar owners were made to buy up to 50 cases of rum in order to secure a single case of whisky. The barmen at Pat O'Brien's came up with the Hurricane recipe to to try and use up some of the rum, and it took off when they started serving it in a hurricane glass.

A New Orleans hurricane is 2 oz white rum, 2 oz dark rum. 1 oz lime juice, 1 oz orange juice, 2 oz passion fruit juice, a half oz simple syrup and a half oz grenadine.
9. Which UK car manufacturer, active only 1957-62, produced the Typhoon, Tempest, Thunderbolt and Talisman models?

Answer: Tornado

According to a company sales brochure from the late 50s, the 2 litre Thunderbolt, with a top speed of 120 mph and a 0-60 time of 10 seconds, could be yours for just £1305. Most of their cars are hard to find today, as there were only about 400 Typhoons built and even less Tempests, as there were only approximately 15 of these made.

Their cars were available in kit form though, where Tornado provided the shell and you, as the builder sourced the engine and chassis so there may be a few more than first thought out there.
10. Prevalent in UK weather talk, what can be found on Heidelberg Bridge in Germany as well as in Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia?

Answer: Brass Monkeys

When it is particularly cold in UK, a popular expression is "it's brass monkey weather". There is a popular myth that this arises from the practice of 17th century warships to store cannon balls on a brass plate, called a monkey. When the weather was cold, the plate would contract, causing the balls to fall off, leading to the expression--although this has been largely debunked by many historians and the U.S. Navy.
