Just eleven years after the devastating Johnstown flood in Pennsylvania on May 31, 1889, Galveston, Texas was hit with the Great Storm of 1900, also known as The Great Galveston Hurricane (before they gave hurricanes names of people). The hurricane struck on September 8, 1900 and destroyed two-thirds of the city of Galveston.

At the time, it was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
