Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which branch of the US military has had nicknames including "Jarheads" and "Gyrenes"?

Answer: Marines

Both of these terms were originally used by sailors or members of the US and British Navy to describe their Marine colleagues. "Jarhead" is thought to be related to the appearance of the Marine dress blues uniform, which had a high collar, resembling a Mason jar. "Gyrene" was first jokingly used as a derogatory term, but was embraced by the Marines during World War I.
2. In 2005, which Hollywood actress married a man who was over 15 years younger than her?

Answer: Demi Moore

In September 2005, Demi Moore (aged 43) married Ashton Kutcher (aged 28). There are numerous examples of Hollywood relationships where the man is older (e.g. Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise: 16 years; Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart: 23 years). But it is much rarer to see an older woman in these relationships.
3. Which South American city, founded in 1541, is the capital of Chile?

Answer: Santiago

Santiago's population in 2012 was about 6 million people, ranking it by population as the largest city in Chile (in the same year, no others had more than a million). Santiago translates to "Saint James", in tribute to the biblical James, son of Zebedee, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus.
4. Which colour links the name of an online t-shirt company ending in "bubble", the name of a charity ending in "cross" and the nickname of Australia's "centre"?

Answer: Red

The colour red is at the end of the visible spectrum of light. The word comes from the Old English and is often associated with love and passion, but also anger and fire. In China red is considered a very lucky colour, associated with happiness (hence it being a big feature in traditional Chinese weddings).
5. Born in 1937, which talented actor won two best actor Oscars for playing characters with mental illnesses?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

All four choices were born in the 1930s. Jack Nicholson has played a variety of challenging roles. He won best actor for characters he portrayed in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and "As Good as it Gets" (2007). He also won best supporting actor for "Terms of Endearment" (1983). Jack was married to Sandra Knight from 1962-1968, but despite his several high-profile relationships since, has not remarried.

He has four children.
6. According to the advertisements aired in the UK, Canada and Australia, "A Mars a day helps you work, rest and _____?"

Answer: play

The Mars bar was named after its creator, Forrest Mars, and first appeared in the US in 1932. It is a chocolate bar consisting of nougat and caramel covered in milk chocolate, and was thought to have been modelled on the Milky Way bar. In Germany, the Mars advertisement was slightly different, saying: "Mars macht mobil bei Arbeit, Sport und Spiel" (Mars mobilizes you at work, sports and play).
7. Which US Naval base is nicknamed "Gitmo"?

Answer: Guantánamo Bay

Guantánamo Bay was established in 1898, following the Spanish-American War. In 1903, the US were offered a perpetual lease for the naval base, which sits in the South East of Cuba.
8. What kind of water transport vehicles are operated by the companies Princess, P&O and Royal Caribbean?

Answer: Cruise ships

The world's first cruise ship was the Prinzessin Victoria Luise. Launched in June 1900, it served for over 6 years before it was grounded (unintentionally) near Jamaica. It was very much designed for the wealthy clientele, having 120 first class luxurious cabins.
9. Which sport, played at the Summer Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008, saw the USA win their first three tournaments but lose to Japan in the 2008 final?

Answer: Softball

Softball was played at the summer Olympics for the first time in 1996, by women only. USA have been the standout team, winning 3 of the 4 gold medals, plus one silver. Baseball, on the other hand, has been dominated at the Olympics by Cuba, who won 3 of the 5 gold medals (baseball was introduced in 1992). Prior to the 2012 London Games, both baseball and softball were removed from the tournament.

This was the first time that sports were removed from a summer Olympics since polo was removed in 1936.
10. So...what's the four-word common bond?

Answer: a few good men

The film "A Few Good Men", released in 1992, was originally a PLAY (Q6) written by Aaron Sorkin (who also wrote the screenplay). It focuses on an event that took place at GUANTANAMO BAY (Q7) involving the death of Private SANTIAGO (Q3), a US MARINE (Q1) who was unintentionally killed by his fellow marines under an order known as a "Code RED" (Q4).

The film had an all-star cast, including DEMI MOORE (Q2), JACK NICHOLSON (Q5) and Tom CRUISE (Q8), who at one stage jokes about his SOFTBALL (Q9) skills being more important than the case.
