Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. St Peter is known for being the first Pope; can you name the man who came after him?

Answer: St Linus

St Linus is the man who succeeded St Peter as Pope.
The three wrong answers are the men who followed St Linus.
2. Roger Bannister, later Sir Roger, was the first man who ran a mile under four minutes. Can you name the man who took the title from him a few weeks later?

Answer: John Landy

John Landy was an Australian who had come close to beating Bannister to the record some months earlier.
Christopher Chataway and Chris Brasher were Bannister's pacemakers on the day.
Ron Clarke was an Australian colleague of Landy's.
3. Queen Victoria gave birth to nine children, all of whom married into royalty or nobility. Who was her second child?

Answer: Prince Albert

Prince Albert Edward, known in the family as Bertie, was the second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria. He was Prince of Wales for most of his life and when his mother passed became King Edward VII.
4. Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and into the desert. Who succeeded him as leader of the Israelites?

Answer: Joshua

Moses was not allowed into the Promised Land. God himself chose Joshua to succeed Moses.
The three wrong answers are found in the Bible book of Judges.
5. William Hartnell was the actor who started it all. Who was the second actor to play The Doctor in "Doctor Who"?

Answer: Patrick Troughton

It was Patrick Troughton with his check trousers, pudding bowl haircut and recorder.
The other three actors did of course play The Doctor. Jon Pertwee was 3, Tom Baker was 4 and Christopher Eccleston heralded the resurrection of the series as 9.
6. Dame Agatha Christie, the Queen of Crime, wrote over 70 novels and many short stories with unforgettable characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. Do you know the title of her second published novel?

Answer: The Secret Adversary

"The Secret Adversary" introduced us to Tommy and Tuppence Beresford who met up after WWI, married and decided to become private detectives. They are unusual in the Agatha Christie canon as while Poirot and Miss Marple age slowly, the Beresfords age realistically, showing how much time has passed in the real world.

In "Postern of Fate", the last novel in which they appear, they are both elderly with grandchildren.
7. With apologies to anyone who has no interest in football (soccer), which is the second oldest professional football club in the world?

Answer: Stoke City

The oldest football club in the world is Nottingham County which was founded in 1862, one year before Stoke City.
Manchester United was founded in 1878, Sheffield United in 1889 and Chelsea is the youngster, being founded in 1905.
8. The Beatles were highly successful and very popular. Can you name their second record that went to number one in the UK Chart?

Answer: She Loves You

This surprised me when I was researching for this quiz. "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me", although released first, did not make it to number one
9. The Eurovision Song Contest has been around since 1956 and shows no sign of ending. Some wonderful songs have won and some amazing artists have made it big (ABBA anyone?). The UK have had several winners and also several second placed entries. Can you name the second UK entry that won?

Answer: "Boom Bang-a-Bang" by Lulu

All of the answers were the winning UK entry but Lulu was the second.
Sandie Shaw won in 1967, famously performing barefoot. The Brotherhood of Man won in 1976 and Bucks Fizz in 1981.
There was no runner-up in 1969 when Lulu won because there was a four-way tie for first place.
10. Radio One began on the BBC in 1967 with Tony Blackburn as the first DJ. Can you name the second record he played?

Answer: "Massachusetts" by the Bee Gees

"Flowers in the Rain" was actually the first record played on the brand new radio station. "Hello Goodbye" was in the charts at the time and "Mighty Quinn" would not be released until the following year.
