Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these fictional characters from children's literature has a good friend named Wendy Darling?

Answer: Peter Pan

In the 'Peter Pan' series of stories by J. M. Barrie, Wendy Darling is often portrayed as a more mature and coming-of-age child than Peter Pan. In fact, many of the Lost Boys in Neverland actually refer to Wendy as 'mother'. Later in the 'Peter Pan' series Wendy Darling grows up, gets married and has a daughter named Jane who befriends Peter Pan. Wendy Darling was voiced by Kathryn Beaumont in the 1953 Disney film 'Peter Pan' and she was portrayed by Maggie Smith and Rachel Hurd-Wood in the live-action films 'Hook' (1991) and 'Peter Pan' (2003).
2. What city, well known for its tea, has the word darling surrounding a three letter command for a horse to turn right?

Answer: Darjeeling

In addition to its prosperous tea industry, Darjeeling is home to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The world's third tallest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga (28,208 feet), is easily visible from the city of Darjeeling.
3. Several places in Australia are named after British colonial Governor Ralph Darling. Which Australian state did Darling serve as Governor from 1825 to 1831?

Answer: New South Wales

Answer: The Beach Boys

"Darlin'" was written by Beach Boys members Brian Wilson and Mike Love. The song reached #19 in the United States and #11 in the United Kingdom. The song's second verse reads as:
"Don't know if words could say
But darlin' I'll find a way
To let you know what you meant to me
Guess it was meant to be
I hold you in my heart
As life's most precious part."
5. What claim to fame is held by Darling Peninsula in Nunavut?

Answer: It is the location of the Geomagnetic North Pole.

Since the Earth has an axial tilt of over 23 degrees, the Geomagnetic North Pole (where the Earth's magnetic field points vertically downwards) of the Earth is not in the same location as the Geographic North Pole. The Darling Peninsula lies on the eastern portion of Ellesmere Island, the tenth largest island in the world.
6. Several television shows have featured families with the last name Darling. Which TV show had characters named Briscoe Darling and Charlene Darling played by Denver Pyle and Maggie Peterson?

Answer: The Andy Griffith Show

"The Andy Griffith Show", running from 1960-68, concerned a widowed sheriff named Andy Griffith and his small community of friends in Mayberry, North Carolina. The four Darling children on "The Andy Griffith Show" were referred to as "The Boys" and they were played by the real-life band The Dillards.

The Darling children were mute boys who had a gift for music, and they often provided the show with a musical relief from the more traditional characters. Other TV shows featuring characters with the last name Darling include "Clarissa Explains it All", "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Blackadder".
7. "Darling" was the name of a critically acclaimed 1965 British film. What actress won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work on the film "Darling"?

"Darling" also won for Best Costume Design and Best Writing and it was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. In the film Julie Christie plays a woman who manipulates men in positions of power so that she can land lucrative roles as an actress.
8. Several Darling individuals have graced the sports world. Which of these Darlings is incorrectly matched with his/her sporting position?

Answer: Gary Darling - English footballer from 1992-2006

Gary Darling is actually the name of a well-known umpire in Major League Baseball. Ron Darling had a career record of 136-116, won a Gold Glove in 1989, a World Series in 1986 and he made the National League All-Star team in 1985.
9. Grace Darling is regarded as a heroine for her actions on September 7, 1838. What heroic feat did Grace Darling perform that day?

Answer: Along with her father, she rowed out to a shipwrecked boat to save several survivors.

Grace Darling's father was the keeper of Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland, England. From the lighthouse, Grace spotted the wrecked ship SS Forfarshire and several survivors struggling to stay alive in the water. Of the 63 people aboard the Forfarshire, 21 were saved by the efforts of the Darling family. William Wordsworth wrote a poem titled 'Grace Darling' in 1843 to commemorate the heroine.
10. The word darling is most often used as an expression of affection. What affectionate lady made the following quote: "I call everyone darling because I can't remember their names."?

Answer: Zsa Zsa Gabor

Zsa Zsa Gabor was a Hungarian-born actress probably best known for her nine husbands. Gabor appeared on the "General Electric Theater" show from 1956-61 and "Burke's Law" from 1963-64. One of my other favorite darling quotes is "It is better to be an old man's darling than a young man's werling." The most-well known use of the word darling in literature and poetry might be from William Shakespeare's sonnet 18 that reads "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May."
