Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these cartoon characters is NOT one of Donald Duck's nephews?

Answer: Daffy

Daffy is a Warner Brothers cartoon character, while Donald and his three nephews are creations of Disney.
2. Baseball star Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak in the 1941 season was stopped at how many games? (Hint: The previous record of 44 straight hits was set in 1897.)

Answer: 56

The record DiMaggio broke (at least one hit in 44 successive games) had stood since 1897. Many think DiMaggio's record will probably never be broken.
3. Where was Hoover Dam originally located in early design plans? (Hint: When the U.S. president changed from Republican Herbert Hoover to Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, FDR wanted to change the name to this.)

Answer: Boulder Canyon

Hoover Dam was started by Republican U.S. President Herbert Hoover (hence, the name) but finished by Democratic U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt (who wanted to rename it Boulder Dam). It took four years and 5,000 workers to complete (during the Great Depression) and was dedicated by FDR in 1935.
4. What color is a polar bear's skin? (Hint: This color absorbs the most heat.)

Answer: Black

Its fur only appears white, but actually is clear.
5. Which of these islands is NOT part of the U.S. Virgin Islands? (Hint: There is a Dutch influence on the architecture on this island.)

Answer: St. Aruba

The Mamas and the Papas perfected their harmonies on St. Thomas in 1965 before launching their career with the song California Dreamin'. Incidentally, there is an island called Aruba but not a St. Aruba (done deliberately just to prevent making the correct quiz answer so obvious).
6. On what ship did the Japanese sign the surrender treaty to end World War II? (Hint: U.S. president Harry Truman was from this state.)

Answer: USS Missouri

The USS Missouri has been refurbished and is on permanent public display in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (beside a memorial to the USS Arizona, which was sunk at Pearl Harbor during the sneak attack there).
7. The seven dwarfs named in the story of Snow White did NOT include which of these characters?

Answer: Wheezy

Wheezy was one of the names considered by the Disney studio, but it was rejected.
8. In the Mel Brook's comedy 'The Producers' (starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder in the movie version), what was the name of the play they produced?

Answer: Springtime for Hitler

The producers deliberately tried to produce a flop (after selling 25,000 percent of their play to investors), but the scheme goes awry when the play is so bad audiences consider it high camp and it becomes a success.
9. What was the birth name of singer John Denver?

Answer: Henry Deutschendorf Jr.

Denver took his stage name from Denver, Colorado. He was born in Roswell, New Mexico (of UFO fame). His first major success was when his song "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was recorded by the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary.
10. The Macintosh computer was introduced to millions of Americans with a TV ad (showing a girl in red running shorts flinging a sledgehammer at a screen showing 'Big Brother') during the Super Bowl in what year? (Hint: Think George Orwell.)

Answer: 1984

The ad was inspired by George Orwell's novel '1984.' It cost $1.6 million to produce, and Apple Corporation paid $500,000 for the one-minute time slot in which it ran.
