Getting Close, But Definitely Not Sheep Quiz

Everything in this quiz sounds like it should be, in some way, related to sheep, but I hate to burst your bubble-- I specifically avoided them. Sometimes, quizzes call for that. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who of these celebrities won a Golden Globe Award for their role on "The West Wing"?

Answer: Martin Sheen

This question comes alongside the Official Seal of the President of the United States because Martin Sheen filled that role for one hundred forty episodes of "The West Wing", playing President Josiah Bartlett to critical acclaim. He ended up winning the Golden Globe once and two SAG Awards for his role.

Although this was Sheen's longest role, he is also known from his long-running role on the Netflix show "Grace and Frankie" and films like "Apocalypse Now", "Catch Me If You Can", "The Departed" and "The Amazing Spider-Man".
2. Hugh Howey's self-publishing efforts on Amazon resulted in the release of what 2011 novel set on a post-apocalyptic Earth?

Answer: Wool

Although Howey intended for "Wool" to be a stand-alone novel, its popularity online ended up sparking the start of his "Silo" series (hence the silo photo) which was set in an underground facility in a dystopian future. Howey was one of the many early adopters of Amazon's self-publishing assets and he was one of the most successful as it led to a lucrative physical publishing deal with Simon & Schuster and the selling of film rights.

The novel "Wool" was followed by "Shift", then "Dust".
3. The Cecil Hotel was the location where which of these people was found?

Answer: Elisa Lam

The Cecil Hotel was eventually rebranded as Stay on Main, but it's most famous for being a site of notoriety near Skid Row in Los Angeles, California. Although there have been many suicides and murders at the hotel (and while it was once the stomping ground for serial killer Richard Ramirez), the landmark was also the site at which Canadian student Elisa Lam disappeared in 2013, vanishing after appearing on elevator security footage.

She was later found on the premises. The story became big enough in the media that "American Horror Story's" fifth season, "Hotel", was partly inspired by it.
4. In which of these environments would you likely see a Cheep-Cheep?

Answer: Dire, Dire Docks in "Super Mario 64"

Cheep-Cheeps are fishy foes that first appeared in "Super Mario Bros." way back on the NES console and they have since appeared in most "Super Mario" video games that involve levels or stages of some sort, almost always showing up in underwater locations but also, occasionally, being able to fly with pairs of wings.

Although Cheep-Cheeps are normally red, yellow, and white, they have also shown up in different colours depending on the game. In the "Paper Mario" series, Mario can utilize Sushie the Cheep-Cheep's ability to cross large expanses of water.
5. What critically-panned German filmmaker known for horrible video game adaptations later went on to battle his critics in the boxing ring?

Answer: Uwe Boll

Uwe Boll is considered amongst the best of the worst for films with many of his German-backed video game adaptations receiving some of the lowest critical review scores of all time. In response to his critics, he challenged all of them to a boxing match-- actually-- and five critics showed up.

He beat them all. Boll went on a filmmaking hiatus in 2016 claiming that he wanted to open a restaurant in Vancouver, and he did. It received better reviews than his films. You may remember his classics like "Alone in the Dark", "BloodRayne", and "House of the Dead".
6. 'Shep' was the name of whose jungle companion?

Answer: George of the Jungle

Tarzan had Tantor, but George of the Jungle had Shep. Shep, despite being an elephant, seemed to act like a dog in most situations, being a domestic counterpart in George's otherwise undomestic life. George also had the companionship of an ape interestingly named Ape who, in the live-action Disney film, was voiced by John Cleese. George and Shep first appeared in cartoons on ABC in 1967.
7. Amsterdam's Scheepvaartmuseum contains exhibits relating to which of these?

Answer: Maritime history

One of Amsterdam's many museums, Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum sits on the edge of the city's famous canals in the Kattenburg District. Opening in the mid-1910s, the museum contains exhibits and items from the nation's illustrious maritime history. Visitors are sure to learn about the Dutch Golden Age during which explorers first reached New Zealand, Tasmania, and the Australian coast. Similarly, during the 17th century, Jan van Riebeeck founded the city of Cape Town, South Africa; he sailed there.
8. Which word describes the act of carrying something heavy and unwieldy with some intensity?

Answer: Schlep

'Schlep' is a Yiddish word meant to refer to the action of carrying something heavy. Someone who schleps their luggage around an airport, for instance, is having a rough go of moving their stuff around. The word derives from German and Dutch, specifically the word 'slepen' which means 'to haul'.

Interestingly, the Yiddish word 'schlepper' means 'stupid person', so you can take from that what you will.
9. In a computer, RAM is used for which of these?

Answer: Storage

RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory and along with your computer's motherboard and hard drive it takes on the task of holding onto most of what your computer needs to run besides the CPU, the Central Processing Unit. RAM is upgradable with many better-built machines having slots to accommodate more.

When your computer runs, RAM takes care of processes that need to be done in that moment; it's not used to store your documents or photos or games or anything like that. The more RAM you have, the more capable your computer will be at multitasking.
10. What board game uses bricks, wood, ore, and wheat (amongst other things) as resources?

Answer: Settlers of Catan

Releasing in 1995, Settlers of Catan (or just Catan) built itself up to become a popular modern board game. Played on hexagonal tiles with up to six people, the aim of the game is to build up your network of cities and settlements to earn enough points to win.

This is done by strategically placing them on the board to claim resources and construct different things-- armies, roads, structures, etc. There are five resources in the core game, though one of them doesn't come to mind. Maybe it has something to do with this quiz.
