Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's Friday, and it's an unlucky day. What is the date?

Answer: 13

Friday the 13th has been unlucky since the Middle Ages. Some historians speculate that this could be because the Last Supper had 13 people, and Jesus was executed the next day, on Friday.
2. A cat crosses your path, and is said to bring you bad luck, a superstition first held by the Pilgrims. What color is the cat?

Answer: Black

The superstition regarding black cats changes between cultures. Black cats have only been said to bring bad luck in the last few hundred years, when the Pilgrims claimed that black cats were servants of witches.
3. If you break this object, bad luck will afflict you for seven years. What is this object?

Answer: A mirror

This superstition originates from the Romans, who believed that a mirror contained a part of your soul. No wonder they feared breaking mirrors!
4. You have found a horseshoe. Is that bad luck?

Answer: No

Hundreds of years ago, people were afraid of goblins, who they believed feared iron. Hanging a horseshoe helped fend off these goblins, or so they believed.
5. This common talisman, a foot of an animal, is thought to bring good luck and ward off evil. From what animal is this foot taken?

Answer: rabbit

This tradition was first noted among the Celts. Certain traditions are more complicated. For example, some call for the left hind foot of a rabbit shot in a cemetery.
6. If you wish for luck, you may do this to your fingers.

Answer: Cross them

This superstition stems from the fact that crossing your fingers makes a shape similar to the Christian cross, which is thought to bring good luck.
7. This number is thought to be the devil's number or the number of the beast, and is considered extremely unlucky. What is this number?

Answer: 666

In the Bible, 666 is referred to as the number of the Beast. It is a number commonly used in context with the Antichrist, or Satan.
8. Which of these items are you not supposed to open inside, for fear of inviting bad luck?

Answer: Umbrella

This superstition also dates back thousands of years to the Roman empire. According to legend, a woman opened her umbrella, only to have the house collapse on her, leading to her death.
9. How many leaves do lucky clovers have?

Answer: Four

Although they are said to bring good luck, it is not easy to find an authentic four-leaf clover, as on average, they make up 1 out of every 5000 clovers.
10. Finally, let's end with a Chinese superstition. What gift is very unlucky, and is thought to mean that the donor is counting down the seconds to the recipient's death?

Answer: A clock

The Chinese believe that a gift of a clock is a curse, as the donor is waiting for the recipient to die. In the case that this unlucky gift is given, the bad luck can be reversed if the recipient pays the donor a small amount of money, so that the clock is bought instead of gifted.
