One of the most infamous highwayman ever, Dick Turpin owes much of his notoriety to the realms of literary fiction and good old fashioned myth. Sentenced to death at York Assizes in 1739, not for highway robbery but for horse theft, it appears his much celebrated ride between London and York never took place.

In fact it is widely believed that the 190-mile epic journey should be attributed to an earlier highwayman called John Nevison in 1676.

Brenda Blethyn starred in the movie 'London River' which explores issues surrounding the London bombings of July 7th, 2005. The English-born Brenda Bottle, as she was originally called, was the youngest of a family of nine children. The Oscar-nominated actress is far from being one dimensional, in 2002 she took part in the London Marathon.

Betty Boop shot to fame, not as a glamour-puss, but as a floppy eared dog in 1930 in a short cartoon called 'Dizzy Dishes'. It wasn't until 1931 that she completed her metamorphosis into human form in 'Dizzy Red'.
Barney Bear first appeared to the public in June 1939 starring in 'The Bear that Couldn't Sleep'. The world had to wait until 1940 for Bugs Bunny to come along in 'A Wild Hare', and Boo Boo eventually turned up in 1958 as Yogi Bear's sidekick.

Battling Bessie Braddock, who died in 1970, was a socialist MP who represented Liverpool for 25 years. Her bronze statue depicts her holding an egg; this is because it was Bessie who was responsible for ensuring every egg had a little lion stamped on it.

The lion stamp was seen as a guarantee that the product had been produced to the utmost food-safety standards. The sculptor, Tom Murphy, has ensured that Bessie won't be lonely when the station is quiet, alongside her he has positioned a bronze statue of Liverpudlian comedian Ken Dodd.
