Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which female singer released a song called "Diamonds" in 2012 from her album "Unapologetic"?

Answer: Rihanna

Rihanna was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados, and rose to fame with her debut single, "Pon de Replay" (2005). She released six more albums in quick succession, and "Unapologetic" (2012) was her seventh. "Diamonds" was written by singer Sia Furler and others, and was the first single released from the album.

The song reached Number 1 in many countries, including the UK, the USA, Portugal, and Russia. The title of this quiz came from the song, whose lyrics include the line "We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky".
2. Most people know that the gemstone diamond is composed of the element carbon. Artificial diamonds, or diamante, are commonly made of the crystal of which of these chemical compounds?

Answer: Zirconium dioxide

As well as in jewelry, diamond is used a lot to make cutting tools, as it is the hardest known substance (10 on the Mohs scale). Its name means "unbreakable", coming from Greek "adamas". Diamonds are usually described by the "four Cs": color, clarity, cut, and carat. They are highly unreactive, but have very high thermal conductivity, and are strong enough to cut through glass.

The crystalline form of zirconium dioxide is usually called cubic zirconia, and is used as a replacement for diamonds. Although it is a thermal insulator rather than a conductor, it is visually very similar to diamond, and is also very hard (8 on the Mohs scale). Silicon carbide is another substance used to replace diamonds.
3. In which franchise were the video games Diamond and Pearl released for the Nintendo DS console as a follow-up to the Ruby and Sapphire versions?

Answer: Pokémon

The name Pokémon derives from the name "Pocket Monsters", and the franchise concerns trainers who collect the creatures called Pokémon and wage battles against other Pokémons and trainers. As with most of the Pokémon video games, Diamond is a role-playing game based on this premise. It is set in Sinnoh, a fictional world that is based on Hokkaido, Japan. Reviews for the Diamond and Pearl versions were generally favorable.

Before Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon games include the Red, Blue, Green and Yellow versions, the Gold and Silver versions, and the Ruby and Sapphire versions.
4. In the film "Diamonds" (1999), three generations of a family search for stashed diamonds in a bid to repair their estranged relationship. Which American actor, who also played van Gogh in a 1956 film, played grandfather Harry Agensky?

Answer: Kirk Douglas

Harry Agensky is a retired boxer who convinces his son Lance and grandson Michael to take a trip with him in order to find diamonds that he had stashed years ago after being paid with them to throw a fight. Lance doesn't believe the diamonds even exist, but agrees to go on the trip with his aging father, during which all three generations find they have to make repairs to their relationships with each other. Dan Aykroyd stars as Lance, while Corbin Allred plays Michael.

Kirk Douglas, born 1916, played artist Vincent van Gogh in the 1956 film "Lust for Life" alongside Anthony Quinn as Paul Gauguin. In recent years, he was known for being the oldest celebrity at the time to write a blog online, which he did at 96.
5. Which country's national women's sports teams include the Diamonds and the Opals?

Answer: Australia

The Opals is the nickname of Australia's national women's basketball team, named for the abundance of opals in the country, and the Diamonds, the national netball team, were nicknamed to keep in line with the theme. The Opals have had various successes, including winning gold at the World Women's Championship in Brazil in 2006, and three silver Olympic medals.

The successes of the Diamonds include winning the Constellation Cup in 2010 and 2011 (a contest with New Zealand's national netball team), and many World Netball Championship golds.
6. Which monarch celebrated their Diamond Jubilee in 2012, marking 60 years since their accession?

Answer: Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom

Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952, after the death of her father, George VI. As well as of the United Kingdom, she is Queen of the 53 other countries of the Commonwealth Realm, which largely developed from the British Empire. In the same year of her Diamond Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth opened the Olympic Games in London, becoming the first head of state to open a Games in two separate countries - in 1976, she opened the Games in Montreal, Canada. During her reign, she became the longest-living British monarch. She has been generally popular in her position, even as British support for the monarchy went down, peaking in 1997 with the death of her daughter-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales. Queen Elizabeth gives interviews only rarely, yet still she has remained popular with the people.

Beatrix of the Netherlands reigned from 1980 until her abdication in 2013, while Olav V of Norway reigned from 1957 to 1991. Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein began his reign in 1989.
7. "Diamond" Dallas Page starred in some small movie roles in the 2000s and 2010s, but for which of these professions is he best known?

Answer: Wrestler

Dallas Page was born Page Joseph Falkenberg in 1956, and shot to fame in World Championship Wrestling. He started out as a manager in wrestling, and later became a wrestler himself. Also known as DDP, Page was known for his "Diamond Cutter" hand gesture, which involves forming a diamond with the index fingers and thumbs; he trademarked the symbol. Page is a proponent of yoga, which he discovered after a back injury, and he has released a book as well as fitness videos on the benefits of yoga.
8. There are various places in the United States called Diamond. In which state, known as the Land of Lincoln, is the village Diamond, known for the disaster in 1883 when a coal mine flooded, killing around 70 men?

Answer: Illinois

Coal was discovered in the area around 1820, and Coal City became a major coal contributor to the city of Chicago. One of the mines in the surrounding area of Coal City was in Diamond, named after coal's nickname of "black diamond", and in 1883, this mine flooded with water.

By the time a miner had raised the alarm, the 70 or so miners who were inside at the time became trapped and drowned. Unfortunately, mine inspectors did not often do their jobs efficiently, and in the case of the Diamond mine, there were defects in the construction that prevented the trapped men from getting out via the escape shaft. Fortunately, the incident led to an amendment to a law that allowed each county to appoint its mine inspectors, and this overhaul in turn led to the appointment of state mine inspectors instead.
9. "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971) was the final film featuring Sean Connery as James Bond. Which of these actors played the role of Bond's nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, in this film?

Answer: Charles Gray

"Diamonds Are Forever" is the seventh James Bond film, and involves Bond impersonating a murderer and smuggler in order to uncover a smuggling ring. The smugglers in the ring are being murdered by henchmen of his old enemy, Blofeld, who plans to use the diamonds to build a laser.

Charles Gray was born in 1928, and as well as playing Blofeld in this film, he played a different character, Dikko Henderson, in the previous Bond film "You Only Live Twice" (1967). Later, Gray was known for his portrayals of Mycroft Holmes, brother of Sherlock. He was one of six actors to play Blofeld in seven James Bond movies; the character's appearance dramatically changing fits in with the description by author Ian Fleming of a criminal who will go to desperate lengths to change and disguise his appearance.
10. A diamond album in the USA is one that has sold over 10 million copies. Which of these Madonna albums, containing the singles "Material Girl" and "Angel", was the only of her first twelve albums to reach diamond certification in the USA?

Answer: Like A Virgin

The certificates for music sales are named after precious metals, and the thresholds differ depending on the country in question, as of course the population has a direct effect on the number of possible sales. In the USA, a silver album has sold 100,000 copies; a gold has sold 500,000; a platinum has sold 1 million; and a diamond has sold a massive 10 million copies.

"Like A Virgin" was Madonna's second album, released in 1984. It received favorable reception from critics, and hit Number 1 in various countries, including the US, Germany, Italy, and New Zealand. Other singles released from it are the titular track "Like A Virgin", "Into The Groove", and "Dress You Up"; the former track created much controversy with the sexual imagery in its music video.
