Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the device used to measure time, where sand falls from the upper bulb to the lower?

Answer: hourglass

Hourglasses date back to the third century and can be used for a variety of tasks--from measuring how long it takes to boil an egg to being used in television opening lines (which stick in our heads). Yes, you know the one I'm talking about.
2. The title of a well-known UK game show is "The Weakest ____". Complete the title.

Answer: Link

Hosted by Anne Robinson, "The Weakest Link" saw contestants answering questions to build up a chain of correct answers. Each correct answer would add one link to the chain. Ten correct answers in a row would result in £1000 being added to the bank. If a player calls "Bank!" as Anne says their name, whatever money value the chain was up to would be added to the bank, and the chain would start again. Perhaps the most memorable part of this was the comments made by Anne as she queried each of the contestants. Oh, and the 'walk of shame', was memorable too, of course.
3. What is the name given to a tall narrow glass, usually used for champagne?

Answer: flute

Champagne! Champagne for everyone! Champagne flutes not only look good, they also keep the contents in fine condition. For example, the long stem is held instead of the bulb of the glass so as to not affect the temperature of the liquid from bodily heat.
4. Which geometric polygon has the types scalene, isosceles, and equilateral?

Answer: triangle

The triangle is the basic three-sided polygon, with all three internal angles adding to 180 degrees. Pythagoras played around with right-angled triangles and developed his famous formula.
5. What is an ancient, oval-shaped wind instrument with a mouthpiece and finger holes?

Answer: ocarina

There are several types of ocarina, the most recognisible being the transverse (or sweet potato). There are usually four to twelve finger holes on an ocarina, and, as with all woodwind instruments, covering a combination of holes while blowing will produce different sounds.
6. To bend the body in a gesture of reverence or greeting is to do what?

Answer: bow

The word 'bow' can be pronounced two ways, each with different meanings. To bend the body is to bow (the 'ow' makes an 'ou' sound, as in count), and the object used for shooting arrows is the bow (the 'ow' makes a long 'o' sound).
7. Name the curved wooden object that, when thrown correctly, will return to the thrower, most associated with Aboriginal Australians.

Answer: boomerang

The art of throwing a boomerang so that it returns to you is quite tricky. Several factors have to be taken into account, such as wind, and the angle at which you throw it. So what do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back? A stick.
8. The Mediterranean Sea is referred to as what in the Bible?

Answer: Great Sea

The name Mediterranean is derived from Latin, 'medius' meaning 'middle', and 'terra' meaning 'land, or earth'. No "Lord of the Rings" references here, though.
9. According to the legend, Excalibur was what type of weapon?

Answer: sword

Excalibur was the sword of King Arthur. There are two stories as to how Arthur acquired the sword: the first is the Lady of the Lake gave it to him when his sword broke during a fight, and the second is that Excalibur was 'the sword in the stone'.
10. So, have a look back at the previous nine questions. All the answers point to the common bond of this quiz, which is a famous video game series. If you think you know it, type it in.

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

"The Legend of Zelda" is the classic Nintendo action-adventure video game series, the first title being released in 1986 for the Famicon Disk System. The series is highly popular, having spawned many sequels for various consoles. The character of Zelda was inspired by the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of "The Great Gatsby".

Let's take a look back at those answers:
1 - "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom HOURGLASS" is the fourteenth game in the series.
2 - The protagonist of the series is LINK, a young boy from the kingdom of Hyrule.
3 - The FLUTE is an item that can summon birds from "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past".
4 - The Triforce is made of three golden TRIANGLES.
5 - "The Legend of Zelda: OCARINA of Time" is the fifth game in the series.
6 - Link wields a BOW at points throughout each game.
7 - The BOOMERANG is a recurring item in the series. Link uses it to collect items, stun enemies, and solve puzzles.
8 - One of the regions of Hyrule is the GREAT SEA.
9 - Link often wields the Master SWORD when fighting Ganondorf.
