Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Birmingham, Alabama used to be known as the 'Pittsburgh of the South' for its steel manufacturing. One of the iron factories, now deserted, has had more than 100 reports of ghostly sightings. What is the name of this foundry, now a National Historic Landmark?

Answer: Sloss Furnace

Birmingham, Alabama became a major producer of iron and steel following the American Civil War. In the 1880s many foundries existed, including the Sloss Furnace. A shift foreman who worked there was reported as being unusually cruel. During his tenure at the foundry, 47 people died in accidents that could have been prevented.

These involved falls from great heights, burns from the molten ore, and machinery incidents. As of 2016, over 100 sightings of ghosts have been reported and the city looks forward to the annual haunted house held there every October.
2. This town in northern Alabama, known as 'Rocket City' due to its ties to space missions, boasts many haunted venues. Here a person can anticipate ghostly sightings at homes, a college, a park, and even a playground! What is this city?

Answer: Huntsville

Huntsville has the Carter Mansion (with the ghost of Sally Carter who topples her own headstone), ghostly children in the playground near Maple Hill Cemetery, and a haunted bible college. Even the Space Camp itself is said to suffer from the sounds of a worker, killed on the job, screaming for help at certain times of the year.
3. In Mobile, Alabama there exists a strong tree that has withstood both hurricanes and time and is said to harbor ghostly voices. It is named the Boyington after the man who claimed it would grow from his grave as proof of his innocence in a crime in which he was charged. What type of tree is it?

Answer: Oak

Charles Boyington came to Mobile, Alabama in 1833 and soon acquired a job with a local printer. He lived in a nearby boardinghouse where he befriended many people, including a frail man named Nathaniel Frost. The years were not kind to Boyington and by 1835 he was broke and his girlfriend had jilted him.

It was during this time that Frost was found dead and Boyington, based on circumstantial evidence, was arrested and condemned to death by hanging. Before he died, he stated that a tree would grow from his pauper's grave as proof of his innocence. Shortly after the burial, an oak tree grew there and was quickly named Boyington's Oak.

It is said you can hear Charles' cries of innocence from beneath its branches.
4. Gulf Shores, Alabama is a great place to get away from it all and relax by the Gulf of Mexico. However, if you get out at night, do not go near the old fort by the mouth of Mobile Bay. At least two ghosts wander here! What is the fort?

Answer: Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan was built in 1834 on the site of an earlier War of 1812 fort. Just after the Civil War, a young local woman was beaten and murdered near the grounds of the fort. Her attackers were never found and it is said her ghost wanders the fort grounds hunting for justice.

In the early 1900s a young solder killed himself in the barracks and it is said you can hear him crying late at night.
5. The old Buck Creek Mill in Alabaster, Alabama is haunted by ghosts of people that used to work there. Perhaps they were even the children that worked the spinning machines. What kind of mill is this haunted facility?

Answer: Cotton

The Buck Creek Cotton Mill was built in 1896 to handle the booming textile industry. This was a time before child labor laws, so often whole families worked together in the mills among the dangerous equipment while breathing cotton fiber. Today, some of the rooms of the mill have blood spots that cannot be removed and certain areas are cold no matter the time of the year. Unexplained noises also abound in the facility.
6. Gaineswood Plantation in Demopolis, Alabama is a beautiful home with twelve huge columns across the front and full of priceless Chippendale furniture. If you go to tour this site, listen carefully. You might be able to hear a ghostly melody that is played on the keys of what instrument in the front parlor?

Answer: Piano

The original builder, Nathan Whitfield, hired a young female assistant to help him with his children after his wife died in the 1840s. The assistant often entertained the kids by playing the piano. Sadly, she became very ill and died. She had begged to be buried back in her home state of Virginia but the burial had to wait for quite a while as the icy weather conditions did not permit travel.

It is said her spirit now stays in the home and visitors can hear her still playing the piano.
7. The Eliza Battle was one of the finest steamboats of its time in the 1850s. However, on its last run from Mississippi to Mobile, Alabama in 1858 it caught fire. It is whispered that you can still see the ghostly burning ship and hear the cries of the drowning passengers. On what river, a tributary of the Mobile River, is this?

Answer: Tombigbee

The steamboat had just left Demopolis, Alabama carrying passengers and many bales of cotton when strong winds turned a small flame into a roaring fire. Passengers had to jump from the ship and try to swim the frigid waters to shore. It became, as of 2016, the greatest maritime disaster of Tombigbee history when 33 people died from drowning or freezing. River men, for years, have talked about the ghostly ship on fire that can be seen.

When this apparition appears, it usually means impending disaster.
8. In Moundville, Alabama you can visit a site that is over 800 years old and has 26 earthen mounds scattered about the grounds. Ghostly lights and distinct sounds can be heard at night. What is Moundville?

Answer: Remains of a Native American village

Moundville was the settlement of Native Americans called the Mississippian culture who were named after the river by which they lived. They built large and small mounds with buildings atop of them and villagers living around the area. By the 1500s, when European explorers arrived, the inhabitants had mysteriously disappeared.

At night, you can sometimes hear the faint sound of drums and you can see lights coming from one of the larger pyramid-shaped mounds.
9. True or False: The county seat of Shelby County, Alabama is Columbiana and its old courthouse is said to be haunted by a ghost on the top floor.

Answer: True

Now a museum, this old building was once the working courthouse. People report that the blinds on the top floor of the building are seen opening and shutting for no reason. Even though the upper story is closed off now, visitors can still hear knocking from up there and the sounds of footsteps. Doors can be heard closing. Sometimes the knocking is even coming from outside the windows as if the spirit wants back indoors!
10. This college in Montgomery, Alabama was started as an all-female school of higher learning. It was one of those original female students, lonely and sad, who killed herself. She has become known as the Red Lady. What college?

Answer: Huntingdon College

Martha (last name unknown) arrived in Huntingdon from New York against her wishes. She loved the color red, was very shy, and had a hard time making friends. Several weeks after Martha's arrival, the dorm president found Martha dead in her room. She was wrapped in a red robe and had slashed her wrists. Every anniversary of the death, students there say that red flashes of light appear near the dorm and the ghost can be seen flitting through the halls.
