Madison County, Iowa once had 19 covered bridges. However, only six remain (Holliwell, Roseman, Cedar, Cutler-Donahoe, Imes and Hogback) and are on the National Register of Historic Places. Great care has been taken to preserve these structures.

For 27 years, the Golden Gate Bridge between San Francisco and Marin California was the longest suspension Bridge (4200 feet, 1290 M) until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York was completed in 1964. It just beats it out by 60 feet (18 M). The Brooklyn Bridge, while also a famous suspension bridge, is nowhere near the longest at a mere 1596 feet (486 M).

The Mackinac Bridge which connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan is 3800 feet (1158 M) long. (The Audubon Bridge in Louisiana is an impressive 12,883 feet (3927 M), however it is a cable-stayed style bridge.
