Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the first Swarovski crystal-cutting factory opened?

Answer: Austria

In 1891 Daniel Swarovski patented a machine that could cut crystal perfectly which greatly improved the manual methods of the time. Daniel Swarovski and his partners chose Wattens, Austria because of its distance from imitators. It also provided good transportation to Paris and the use of hydroelectric power. The Rhomberg Loden Factory was their first production site in 1895.
2. What color "crystal persuasion" was made famous by Tommy James and the Shondells in their 1969 hit song?

Answer: Blue

"Crystal Blue Persuasion" was written by Tommy James, Eddie Gray and Mike Vale. In interviews James has stated that at the time the song was written he was embracing Christianity and the lyrics referenced the Book of Revelation: "The imagery was right out of Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation, about the lake of crystal, and just what John sees.

The imagery was just right there. 'Crystal blue persuasion' although those words aren't used together, it was what the image meant to me." The lyrics, "It's a new vibration," are about James becoming Christian.

He further stated "Everybody in the band, by the way, became Christian. And we're very proud of it. And 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' was sort of our way of saying that in a kind of pop record way."
3. In an episode of "The Sopranos" titled "Cold Stones" how much did AJ say a bottle of Cristal costs in a club?

Answer: $500

In the series 6 episode Carmela and Tony discover that their son AJ had been fired from his job at Blockbuster Video. In an effort to defend himself AJ laments that the job couldn't support his "lifestyle" anyway. He whines that the club he frequents charges $500 for a bottle of Cristal --with a two bottle minimum! In a previous episode he is seen paying a $1500+ tab at the club. Life was tough for the young Soprano!
4. For which wedding anniversary is crystal the traditional gift in the US and UK?

Answer: 15

The tradition of symbolic anniversary gifts for each year of marriage became popular during the Victorian times although how the traditional symbolic gifts were chosen remains uncertain. Some believe that the symbols were chosen to bring good luck. Another thought is that the specific materials correspond to the strengthening of the marriage with each gift gradually increasing in both material and value.
5. In the American 1980s television series "Dynasty" who did Krystle Jennings marry when she became a Carrington?

Answer: Blake

Krystle Jennings (nee Grant) was the (much younger) former secretary to tycoon Blake Carrington. Adam and Steven were the sons of Blake and his ex-wife, Alexis, and Jeff was their son-in law. The original "Dynasty" ran from 1981 to 1989.
6. What is the term for crystal ball divination?

Answer: scrying

John Dee, an astronomer, mathematician, occultist and royal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I spent much of his life devoted to the study of alchemy, divination and other occult arts. He often participated in "scrying sessions" with fellow occultist Edward Kelley using a crystal ball. Dee's crystal ball can be seen on display in the British Museum.
7. In which "Saturday Night Live" sketch might Billy Crystal have greeted his guest with the tagline "You look mahvelous"?

Answer: Fernando's Hideaway

Crystal portrayed a comical version of the actor Fernando Lamas. He would interview celebrities, often confusing them with someone else, on his talk-show "Fernando's Hideaway". During each interview he would use his catch phrase, "You look mahvelous", and frequently ended the sketch with, "It's better to look good than to feel good."
8. A snowflake is actually a crystal.

Answer: True

The water molecules of a snow crystal are all lined up in a precise hexagonal arrangement. A snowflake is a more general term which can mean an individual snow crystal, but it sometimes it's used to describe just about anything that falls from the winter clouds. Often snow crystals collide and stick together in mid-air as they fall, forming flimsy "puffs" known as snowflakes.

A snow crystal appears when water vapor in the air converts directly into ice without first becoming liquid water. As more water vapor condenses onto a developing snow crystal it grows and an ornate pattern emerges. Frozen raindrops are not snow crystals but rather sleet. Simply put, calling a snow crystal a snowflake is like calling a tulip a flower.
9. The Diamond Crystal Brand lauded its pantry staple as "the Uncommon ____"

Answer: Salt

US ads for Diamond Crystal Salt running in the 1960s and 1970s used the catchphrase "The Uncommon Salt". The brand boasted that being "flaked" gave it the ability to "cling to food".
10. The branch of science concerned with the structure and properties of crystals is called Crystology.

Answer: False

Crystallography is branch of science that deals with arrangement and bonding of atoms in crystalline solids and with the geometric structure of crystal. Modern crystallography is largely based on the analysis of the diffraction (bending of light) of X-rays by crystals acting as optical gratings (splitting of light into several beams). X-ray crystallography enable chemists to determine the internal structures and bonding in the arrangements of minerals and molecules.
