Day of the Week - Sunday Trivia Quiz

The idea of seven-day weeks is not sacrosanct nor even particularly scientific. It made sense to the ancient Babylonians, to Alexander the Great, to the Emperor Constantine and to several other highly-influential people. So that's what we've got.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1960 Greek romantic comedy motion picture "Never on a Sunday," what is the occupation of Ilya, played by Melina Mercouri?

Answer: she is a prostitute

Jules Dassin wrote, directed and starred in "Never on a Sunday." He played the part of Homer Thrace, a classical scholar from America visiting the port of Piraeus in Greece as a tourist. He encounters Ilya, a prostitute, and finds her to be a delightful young woman.

He attempts to lead her toward rectitude while she attempts to loosen up his rigid morality. The movie's theme song was written by Manos Hatzidakis who won the Oscar for Best Original Song. In it, Ilya explains that you may kiss her on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, if you wish, or on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, if you prefer, or "on a cool day, a hot day, a wet day" or "a gray day, a May day, a pay day" or "a bleak day, a freak day, a week day" "[b]ut never, never on a Sunday, cause that's my day of rest."
2. In Protestant churches in the US, when is Reformation Sunday usually celebrated/observed?

Answer: last Sunday in October

In the Protestant Christian tradition, Martin Luther's posting of the 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on 31 October 1517 is commemorated as Reformation Day. October 31 is also All Hallow's Eve, the vigil of All Saints' Day (1 November). In order to give each day its due, many Protestant churches in the US move the observance to the last Sunday in October. The holiday is kept in Lutheran, Calvinist and Reformed churches to honour not only Martin Luther but all of the important figures in the Continental Reformation.
3. According to the 19th century nursery rhyme, what is the future/fate of a child born on Sunday?

Answer: bonny and blithe, good and gay

Fortune-telling rhymes based on the day of the week on which a child is born have existed in English since the 16th century. The following one was first published in 1838: "Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace. Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go. Friday's child is loving and giving, Saturday's child works hard for a living. And the child born on the Sabbath day Is bonny and blithe, good and gay."
4. Bloody Sunday, 1972, involved the shooting of unarmed persons by British paratroopers in which area?

Answer: Derry, Northern Ireland

British Army troops were called to respond to an anti-government demonstration in the Bogside area of Derry in Northern Ireland. The death of fourteen demonstrators resulted in the confrontation being called Bloody Sunday in the press. Two investigations were conducted.

The first exonerated the army. The second, much later, found the military's conduct unjustifiable. No prosecutions resulted. Support for the IRA increased.
5. The noun "domingo" translates into the English Sunday from which modern European language?

Answer: Spanish

The days of the week in Spanish are "Lunes" (Monday), "Martes" (Tuesday), "Miércoles" (Wednesday), "Jueves" (Thursday), "Viernes" (Friday), "Sábado" (Saturday), and "Domingo" (Sunday).

Other words for Sunday are "Dumenica" (Corsican), "Zondag" (Dutch), "Sunnuntai" (Finnish), "Dimanche" (French), "Sonntag" (German), "Sunnudagur" (Icelandic), "Domenica" (Italian) and also "Domingo" (Portuguese).
6. In 1975, John Martyn released his eighth album and named both one of those songs as well as the entire album "Sunday's ________" what?

Answer: Sunday's Child

Martyn wrote all but two of the songs on "Sunday's Child." He accompanies himself on guitar. The lyrics are odd and a bit difficult to understand. "Saturday night comes creeping / Saturday night comes creeping cold / Saturday night comes laughing and dancing / Sunday leaves you cold."
7. According to the title of the 1969 novel by Harry Kemelman (1908-1996), what did amateur detective Rabbi David Small do on Sunday?

Answer: stayed home

There are twelve volumes in Harry Kemelman's series of novels involving Rabbi David Small, the first seven of which are named for the days of the week. The third in the series is "Sunday the Rabbi Stayed Home." All is not well with his Conservative Jewish congregation: some want to replace him as rabbi and others want to start a break-away synagogue across the street.

He is invited to keep Passover at the local university and finds no peace but rather political, racial and cultural strife which ends up in murder.
8. "Any Given Sunday" (1999) is an American sports drama motion picture, directed by Oliver Stone, about which professional sport?

Answer: football

In 1984, NFL defensive end Pat Toomay wrote a novel entitled "On Any Given Sunday" based on his experiences as a professional football player. The title of the book refers to a common saying about professional football: that any team can win or lose any game on any given Sunday.

The film follows the season of the fictional Miami Sharks coached by Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino). In the movie, it is D'Amato who says the line about "any given Sunday." In addition to Pacino, the cast includes many notable actors: Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jamie Foxx, James Woods, LL Cool J, Ann-Margret, and Charlton Heston. Even more interesting is the number of cameos by former NFL football players: Jim Brown, Lawrence Taylor, Pat Toomay, Johnny Unitas, Dick Butkus, Y. A. Tittle, Warren Moon, and Emmitt Smith.
9. Your grandfather is driving when another car pulls out in front of him, failing to yield the right of way and nearly causing a collision. Gramps yells out the car window "Sunday driver!" What does he mean?

Answer: the driver is inattentive

In the 1920s and 1930s, gasoline was relatively inexpensive and many families, which did not use their automobiles during the week, took their cars out for what was known as a "Sunday drive." This pleasurable pastime was often leisurely and aimless. The slow pace of a Sunday drive, the driver distracted by the sights, and the apparent inexpertise with which the car was operated typified the "Sunday driver." Gasoline and rubber rationing during World War II put an end to Sunday drives.
10. After what ancient deity and/or celestial object was Sunday named?

Answer: Sol/the sun

The Ancient Greeks called Sunday "hemera heliou" which meant the day of the sun. Modern Greeks call it "Kyriake" meaning the Lord's day. The Ancient Romans called it "dies solis" meaning day of the sun. The Old German word was "sunnon-dagaz"; the modern German is Sonntag. The Old English name for Sunday was "sunnandaeg" and the Middle English was "soneday" both which meant the Sun's day. The Sun referred not only to the celestial object but to Sunna/Sol, the goddess of the sun, as well.
