Day of the Week - Tuesday Trivia Quiz

The idea of seven-day weeks is not sacrosanct nor even particularly scientific. It made sense to the ancient Babylonians, to Alexander the Great, to the Emperor Constantine and to several other highly-influential people. So that's what we've got.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Mitch Albom's 1997 book and the 1999 made-for-TV movie "Tuesdays with Morrie" about?

Answer: visits to a friend dying of ALS

"Tuesdays with Morrie" is a "non-fiction novel" written by journalist Mitch Albom about his relationship with his former college professor Morrie Schwartz (1916-1995). Dr. Schwartz taught sociology at Brandeis University. Albom wrote the book to raise funds for Schwartz' care as the professor slowly declined from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- Lou Gehrig's disease.

The book, which was a New York Times Non-Fiction Best-Seller, was made into a television motion picture starring Hank Azaria and Jack Lemmon.
2. What is the proper liturgical title for the last day of Shrovetide, popularly called Mardi Gras or Carnival?

Answer: Shrove Tuesday

On the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, the church marks the last day of Shrovetide with Shrove Tuesday. This is an occasion of making a last confession before Lent (described as "shriving" from which the name of the day comes). It is also an occasion for eating up those foods which will be forbidden by Lenten discipline. Fatty food in the pantry are used up by making pancakes, hence the name Pancake Tuesday.

This is also the day on which the palms, dried and kept from the previous year's Palm Sunday, are burnt, the ashes to be used at the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, the morrow.
3. According to the 19th century nursery rhyme, what is the future/fate of a child born on Tuesday?

Answer: full of grace

Fortune-telling rhymes based on the day of the week on which a child is born have existed in English since the 16th century. The following one was first published in 1838: "Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace. Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go. Friday's child is loving and giving, Saturday's child works hard for a living. And the child born on the Sabbath day Is bonny and blithe, good and gay."
4. What is the origin of the expression and common American practice of "Taco Tuesday"?

Answer: nobody knows for sure

Taco Tuesday is the custom of eating tacos for supper on Tuesday evenings, in restaurants or at home. Taco John's Restaurant in Wyoming holds a trademark issued in 1989 but has not successfully asserted it. Gregory's Restaurant & Bar of Somers Point, New Jersey, holds an earlier trademark (1982) but it contains many legal limitations. LeBron James, after posting in social media about his family's Tuesday-night taco dinner tried to trademark "Taco Tuesday" in 2019 but failed.

The Trademark Office said that the term "conveys an ordinary, familiar, well-recognized concept or sentiment" which is therefore not trademarkable.
5. The noun "Dienstag" translates into the English Tuesday from which modern European language?

Answer: German

The days of the week in German are "Montag" (Monday), "Dienstag" (Tuesday), "Mittwoch" (Wednesday), "Donnerstag" (Thursday), "Freitag" (Friday), "Samstag" (Saturday) and "Sonntag" (Sunday).

Other words for Tuesday are "Dimarts" (Catalan), "Marti" (Corsican), "Tirsdag" (Danish and Norwegian), "Dinsdag" (Dutch), "Mardi" (French), "Kedd" (Hungarian), "Martedì" (Italian), "Terça-feira" (Portuguese), "Martes" (Spanish) and "Tisdag" (Swedish).
6. Hugo Fregonese directed Edward G. Robinson and Peter Graves in "Black Tuesday" (1954). What was the motion picture about?

Answer: a gangster's prison break

Mobster Vincent Canelli (Robinson) escapes from prison on the day of his scheduled execution, taking hostages including his wounded partner Peter Manning (Graves). One of the hostages is a priest; another is a prison guard who Canelli murders to demonstrate the reality of his demands to pursuing police. This is neither Fregonese's nor Robinson's greatest film.
7. According to the title of the 1973 novel by Harry Kemelman (1908-1996), what did amateur detective Rabbi David Small do on Tuesday?

Answer: saw red

There are twelve volumes in Harry Kemelman's series of novels involving Rabbi David Small, the first seven of which are named for the days of the week. The fifth book in this series is "Tuesday the Rabbi Saw Red." In it, the rabbi takes a part-time teaching position at a local college. Rather than providing him a respite for the tumult of life in his congregation, a bombing kills one of his colleagues and he sets about discovering the truth about it.

He uses Talmudic logic to lead to a resolution.
8. What are the main characters in "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" (1969) doing in Europe?

Answer: a whirlwind guided vacation

"If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" is a wacky comedy which follows a group of tourists through 18 days of a European vacation. The tour guide has intentions for the character played by Suzanna Pleshette. One of the amusing things about this film is the number of cameo appearances: Senta Berger, John Cassavetes, Joan Collins, Donovan, Anita Ekberg, Ben Gazzara, Virna Lisi, and Robert Vaughn.
9. Tuesday Weld, in addition to modeling, television, Broadway and motion picture acting, won a Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer (1960) for, among other achievements, her role on which of these television programmes?

Answer: The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis

Weld played Thalia Menninger, the unattainable love interest of Dobie Gillis, in the first season of the show. Thalia was more attracted to Milton Armitage, played by Warren Beatty. Tuesday was not her birth name. Her cousin Mary Kerr could not pronounce Susan and called her "Tu-tu" instead. She changed it legally in 1959.
10. After what ancient deity and/or celestial object was Tuesday named?

Answer: Tiu, Twia, Tiw or Tyr

The Ancient Greeks called it "hemera Areos" meaning the day of Ares, the god of war. The Ancient Romans called it "dies Martis" meaning the day of Mars, the god of war. Tiu, Twia or Tiw was the Germanic-English god of war, related to Tyr, the Norse god of war. Tiu (Twia) is the English/Germanic god of war and the sky. He is identified with the Norse god Tyr. Thus Tuesday derived from "Tısdagr" (Tyr's day), "Tiwesdag" (Tiwe's day) and/or "tewesday".
