Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christmas was approaching in the movie "A Christmas Story" and young Ralphie wanted only one present, and he wanted it badly! What was it?

Answer: Red Ryder BB Gun

The movie "A Christmas Story" was released in 1983 and concerned Ralphie's (Peter Billingsley) attempts to convince his parents that a Red Ryder BB Gun would be the perfect present for him. The movie was a modest success but gained 'classic' status when the TNT television network played it alone in a 24-hour marathon on Christmas Eve and day, 1997.
2. Red Adair was a man who had an unusual and extremely dangerous profession. Have you read what it was?

Answer: oil well firefighter

Paul 'Red' Adair was a bomb disposal specialist for the U.S. Army in World War II. Upon returning home to Texas he became an oil well firefighter and founded his own company in 1959. Over the years he fought some spectacular oil and natural gas well fires all over the world.

In 1991, at the age of 75, Adair helped extinguish oil well fires in Kuwait set by the retreating Iraqi army in the Gulf War.
3. Ack! Get that thing away from me! Is it poisonous? Does it bite? It looks like it's from south of the border. What's it called?

Answer: Mexican redknee tarantula

With a leg span of 6 in./15 cm, the Mexican redknee tarantula is a formidable-looking arachnid. If surprised, it is more likely to kick irritating hairs from its abdomen and back legs rather than bite. These tarantulas are only slightly venomous to humans. They are considered docile and are said to make good pets. Right, and good luck to you if you adopt one!
4. In the history of automobile racing, one brand has stood above most others, winning title after title and always a threat to steal a race away from a presumed victor. Which brand of car is this?

Answer: Ferrari

Whether it's the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Formula 1 championship or any other racing series, Ferraris, in their usual blood-red livery, have almost always been at the top of the field. Either a Formula car or the F12 Berlinetta pictured here (which might be considered a Formula 1 car with a roof and air conditioning), the prancing horse emblem on the car indicates that it's for the automotive connoisseur (one for whom price is no object).
5. The song suggested by this picture was originally sung in German. A version in English was later released but American audiences preferred the German version. What song is it?

Answer: 99 Red Balloons

The song "99 Luftballons", or "99 Red Balloons" as it is known in English, was a 1983 song by the German band Nena. Carlo Karges, guitarist for the band, was at a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin in 1982 and watched as balloons were released and appeared to form the shapes of spacecraft.

He wondered what might happen if the balloons drifted into East Berlin and thus the song was born. It was a worldwide hit and reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the second highest ranking of a song sung in German on that list.
6. You may have read about a certain stellar object or you may have seen a BBC comedy show using the same name, but can you identify it by looking at this picture?

Answer: red dwarf

All things considered, a red dwarf is a relatively cool star (4,000 K) and is the most common type in our galaxy. They are small stars with low masses, hence the lower temperatures. They can be observed from Earth with a telescope. "Red Dwarf" is a British science fiction comedy program that has had several iterations starting in 1988. Some of its highest ratings came in 1999.
7. A man who was considered one of the great clowns of early American TV really did start out as a circus clown, graduating to vaudeville, radio and television. Who was he?

Answer: Red Skelton

Richard 'Red' Skelton was from Indiana. His father died two months before he was born. Red started selling newspapers when he was seven years old. Finding he had an ability to make people laugh, he began a career in show business which lasted for over sixty years. He helped shape the television variety series format, all the while pursuing a second career as an artist, particularly painting circus performers; he once said that lithographs of his paintings earned him $2.5 million per year.
8. On "Star Trek", when the USS Enterprise encountered a dangerous situation, what status did the ship go to?

Answer: red alert

Red alert was the highest alert status on Federation vessels. It alerted all crew members to report to their stations and activated the ship's weapons systems and defensive shields. Though Captain Kirk and the other captains who followed him repeatedly told everyone who would listen that they were on peaceful exploratory missions, the ship packed enough firepower to destroy all life on a planet.
9. A realistic novel about a young soldier in the American Civil War who wanted to be wounded was written by a man who never saw combat himself. What is the name of the book?

Answer: The Red Badge of Courage

Stephen Crane wrote "The Red Badge of Courage" in 1893 after interviewing several Civil War veterans, notably some from the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The book concentrated on the experience of a young soldier wanting to believe he was part of something bigger than himself rather than on the larger scope of the war itself, which was the popular style of writing at the time. Considered an American classic, the book has never been out of print.

A longer version of the novel, based on Crane's original manuscript, was published in 1982.
10. The Christian Bible is full of allegories and symbolism. A surprising image in the book of Revelation is a creature not usually associated with biblical lands. What is it?

Answer: red dragon

Revelation 12:3 in the Bible describes a red dragon with seven heads, ten horns and seven crowns on its heads waiting to take a soon-to-be-born child from a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

The child was born, was snatched up to Heaven and the dragon was revealed to be Satan. A battle ensued and Satan and his minions were hurled down to Earth. Unable to harm the woman or her child, the dragon went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring: us!
