Casa Rosada,the pink house, is the seat of the Argentinean government and stands in the Plaza de Mayo. It was previously used as a customs house and stands on the site of an old fort. The building was selected to house the government in 1862. President Bartolome Mitre decided on the pink colour as a compromise between the colours of the main political parties which used red and white as their official colours.

The fort was first designed in 1526 and was refined by Shah Jahan who first used it as the residence of the Emperor. It is named after the red sandstone walls that enclose the building. The design used Islamic standards with influence from other traditions such as Hindu and Persian. It was used as the official residence of the Emperors until 1856.
3. In which Greek seaside city can one visit the White Tower?

Answer: Thessaloniki

The tower was built in the 15th century on the site of another tower that was part of the defensive walls of the city of Thessaloniki. During its long history it was called by various names including Lion's Tower, Kalamaria tower and blood tower, due to the many executions that took place there.
