Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This yummy shade of yellow is named for a variant of cake created in 1927 by Harry Baker (such an appropriate name). What kind of cake is this, that is celebrated in the USA on March 29th?

Answer: Lemon chiffon cake

After holding on to his chiffon cake recipe for 20 years, Baker sold it to General Mills in 1947. Shortly afterwards, a set of recipes was published that included fourteen variations of chiffon cake, including the lemon chiffon cake.

(Moist, light and fluffy, chiffon cakes are essentially a hybrid of sponge and genoise cakes.)

I couldn't determine how long 'National Lemon Chiffon Cake Day' (March 29th) has been celebrated in the USA, but what a great excuse to have such an exquisite treat!
2. When Crayola began making crayons in the early 20th century, there were three shades of yellow available. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Banana mania

According to the website crayoncollecting.com, one of the earliest verifiable lists (on the flagship box (No. 51) of the Crayola line) had 28 different crayon colours included lemon yellow, medium yellow, and golden ochre. Many variations of yellow have come and gone in the more than 100 years the company has existed, but 'banana mania' was not introduced until 1997.
3. Yellow chartreuse (and its green counterpart) was named after the colour of a French liqueur.

Answer: True

It was Carthusian Monks who first made green chartreuse (in the Chartreuse Mountains of Grenoble in France) in 1767. Soon afterwards, 'chartreuse' became the term for that shade of yellowish green. About 70 years later (in 1838), they also began producing yellow chartreuse, which was greenish yellow, and was sweeter and milder than its predecessor.

The exact recipe for this liqueur has remained a trade secret of the Carthusian Monks over the centuries.
4. What shade of yellow is named for these songbirds, with the binomial name Crithagra flaviventris?

Answer: Canary

Canaries have their origin with the Canary Islands, brought to mainland Europe with Spanish sailing ships in the 17th century. At first, canaries were bred for and by the rich, and were favourite possessions of royalty. Since then, canary-breeding has evolved into three main types - breeding for colour, breeding for shape, and breeding for singing.
5. In Canada and the United States, the colour of school busses has been standardized with 'National School Bus Glossy Yellow' for many years. But what lead-based pigment was originally used?

Answer: Chrome yellow

In 1939, a standard yellow was recommended for school busses across the United States, which eventually was accepted in every state and all of Canada. That didn't actually happen until 1974, and that whole time the paint being used was 'National School Bus Chrome', which used chrome yellow, AKA lead(II) chromate (PbCrO4).

In 1978, all lead-based paints were banned, and the change was made to the current, non-lead-based paint called 'National School Bus Glossy Yellow'.
6. Blondes may or may not have more fun, but they definitely have less of what dark pigmentation?

Answer: Eumelanin

Melanin is the primary determinate of skin colour, while pheomelanin is mostly involved with the colouring of certain parts of the body (lips, nipples, pubic areas). Neuromelanin, as the name suggests, is a dark pigmentation found in the brain.

Eumelanin is the primary factor determining hair colour, with two main types - black and brown eumelanin. If you have a low amount of brown eumelanin (in the absence of other pigments), then your hair will be blond(e).
7. The first recorded use of the colour 'royal yellow' (in English) was in 1548, and was named after the colour of the robes worn by the Emperor of which Asian nation?

Answer: China

The distinctive yellow shade worn by Chinese emperors predates the British colonial use of the term, but the use of 'royal yellow' as one of our currently-used shades of yellow traces its origins to that early (British) colonial time. 'Royal yellow' was also known as 'imperial yellow' and 'Chinese yellow'.
8. On November 12th, 1965, Bob "Butch" Summers set a land speed record of 409.277 miles per hour that would stand until 1991. What was his speedy 'land rocket' called, that was named for this beautiful flowering plant?

Answer: Goldenrod

Brothers Bob and Bill Summers worked together to create their amazing race car, a golden wonder designed for speed at 32 feet in length while just being 48 inches wide and 42 inches high. Their unique design would become the standard concept that other land speed race cars would try to emulate in the following decades.

The 'Goldenrod' was added to the Henry Ford Museum (in Dearborn, MI) in 2006 as a permanent display after being restored.
9. 'Mellow yellow' made its first appearance as a colour (on the Plochere colour list) in 1948. Which Scottish-born singer popularized the shade with a song (and album) of the same name in 1966?

Answer: Donovan

Donovan Phillips Leitch was born in Glasgow in 1946 but moved to England as a child. By the early 1960s, Donovan was making a name for himself playing in local clubs and writing his own songs. He produced his first demo tape in 1964 and recorded his first album "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid" in May of 1965.

"Mellow Yellow" (1967) was Donovan's fourth studio album with the title single being released in November of 1966. The song reached Number Two on the US Billboard Hot 100.
10. In the jewellery industry, the most popular types of gold are yellow, white and rose. While pure (24k) gold is yellow in colour, what metal, with atomic number 29, is primarily alloyed with pure gold to make red, rose and pink gold?

Answer: Copper

Although sometimes silver or zinc are included in red alloys of gold, the primary contributor to the different shading of red is the copper content. As an example, 18 karat red gold is 75% gold and 25% copper, while 18 karat rose gold is 75% gold with 22.5% copper and 2.5% silver.
