Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the card game Hearts, what is the card that is worth the most points if you get stuck with it?

Answer: Queen of Spades

The object of the game Hearts is to have the fewest amount of points at the end of the game. Each card in the hearts suit is worth one point and the queen of spades is worth 13 points. Each of four players takes turns putting down cards, and the person who puts down the highest card of the original suit in that trick takes all the cards and adds the applicable points to their scores.

However, if a player 'shoots the moon' and ends up with all the heart cards and the queen of Spades, then they either subtract 26 points from their score, or 26 points is added to the scores of all the other players, depending on the variant of the game that is being played.
2. In music, which character is associated with the "Lonely Hearts' Club Band"?

Answer: Sergeant Pepper

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is the title of a 1967 album and song by the Beatles. The album was ranked the greatest of all time by "Rolling Stone" magazine in 2003. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is also the title of a 1978 movie, and the soundtrack to that movie.
3. If you and I were "having a heart-to-heart", what are we doing?

Answer: having a meaningful conversation

Having a heart-to-heart means having a conversation with a friend, usually a conversation in which one or both parties reveal their emotions or true feelings about something. In other words, the two people conversing pour their hearts out to each other.
4. Approximately when does the human heart start beating in utero?

Answer: three to six weeks after conception

The heart of a human embryo starts beating sometime around 23 days after conception, definitely by the fifth to sixth week. It first beats at the same rate of the mother's heart, then accelerates up to 185 beats per minute during the first month of heart function.

After the about the 9th week of pregnancy, the baby's heart beat gradually slows again. Doctors do not know how blood is circulated in the early weeks of the embryonic stage.
5. What is the surname of the sisters in the band Heart?

Answer: Wilson

The band Heart, from Seattle, Washington, has sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson as members, along with a few others past and present. Ann is usually the lead singer, while Nancy plays guitar. Nancy Wilson is married to film director Cameron Crowe and often composes music for his films (including the 2000 movie "Almost Famous").
6. When was the "I [Heart] NY" campaign started in New York?

Answer: 1970s

The then Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Commerce, William S. Doyle hired an advertising firm in 1977 to create a marketing plan for New York state. The simple I [Heart] NY" design caught on really quickly and has sold well ever since (especially on t-shirts). Though most people think the design refers to New York City, it was actually originally meant to describe the whole state.

It is now associated even more with NYC, due to the icon's increasing popularity after September 11, 2001.

The same advertising firm who designed the icon in 1977 has since created a new, similar design that says "I [Heart] NY More than Ever". In this new design, the heart has a small black spot on it, to signify where Ground Zero is on the island of Manhattan.
7. Who wrote the collection of stories "Hearts in Atlantis"?

Answer: Stephen King

The 1999 collection "Hearts in Atlantis" is a bit of a divergence for the author who typically writes horror. It is a collection of two novellas and three short stories, featuring the same characters. They are about the Baby Boom Generation and how they failed to live up to expectations of greatness.

The first story in the bunch, "Low Men in Yellow Coats", was turned into the 2001 film "Hearts in Atlantis" starring Anthony Hopkins.
8. How long did Louis Washkansky, the recipient of the first human heart transplant, live after the procedure?

Answer: 18 days

Louis Washkansky, of South Africa, was the patient on the receiving end of the first successful heart transplant performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in December 1967. While the transplant was successful, Washkansky had a weakened immune system and he died of pneumonia 18 days after the operation. Prior to this transplant, Dr. James Hardy in Jackson, Mississippi had implanted a chimpanzee heart into a human. That transplant was successful as well, but the heart beat for only 70 minutes before the patient died.
9. Who starred in the 1999 film "Random Hearts"?

Answer: Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas

The film is loosely based on the 1984 novel of the same name, written by Warren Adler. Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas play the spouses of two people who were killed in a plane crash. In the aftermath of the crash, they find out that their spouses were carrying on an affair together.
10. The quick-tempered monarch The Queen of Hearts is a character in which children's story?

Answer: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

In Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"(1865), the Queen of Hearts is a croquet-playing playing card and she is married to the King of Hearts (also a playing card). The Queen freely and frequently orders the beheading of many people in Wonderland, calling out "Off with his head!" without a second thought.

The King, however, is much more calm and understanding, and calls off many of the executions when the Queen is distracted.
