Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Egyptians were among the first to be documented for using the gemstone peridot, their source of this gemstone was from Zabargard. The island Zabargard did not always carry this name, what other name was it known by?

Answer: St. John's Island

Zabargad is located in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. The island is uninhabited and is mostly made up from the earth's mantle, this exposed mantle has several veins of peridotite (raw peridot). The peridotite in on Zabargad has been dated to be around 600 million years old.
2. What type of mineral is peridot?

Answer: Olivine

The chemical formula for peridot (and olivine) is (Mg,Fe)2SiO4, and although olivine is one of the most common minerals it is not always of gem quality. Olivine has also been discovered on the moon, Mars as well as on some meteorites.
3. Before the convenience of modern medication people had to use whatever was available to them in hopes of curing their illness. Several of these cures were developed by using ingredients from nature, what would the peridot have been used to cure?

Answer: The peridot was ground into a powder and administered as a cure for asthma.

In today's society asthma is a disease that is easily understood and diagnosed but unfortunately more and more people are being struck by this disease. Modern medication is available to treat people who suffer from asthma, but in our world there are many triggers to this disease making everyday life a obstacle coarse to those who suffer. Personally I would prefer to have asthma treated with puffers rather than powdered peridot.
4. Hawaiians had a legend that credits the goddess Pele for giving them peridot. How did they think Pele deposited the gemstones?

Answer: It's believed that peridot formed from her teardrops.

Many early cultures developed myths and legends to explain the presence of gemstones as well as magical qualities attributed towards gemstones. In one legend it says that a priest could become spiritually nearer to the goddess Isis by drinking from a cup made out of peridot.
5. When celebrating wedding anniversaries what year is the peridot accepted as a wedding gift?

Answer: 16th wedding anniversary

Depending on which list you look at, there are various suggestions for each anniversary. Peridot is one of the suggested gemstones for the sixteenth anniversary the other gemstone is aquamarine. Another suggested gift for that anniversary is silver holloware.
6. Peridot is the modern birthstone for the month of August. What gem is the traditional stone?

Answer: Sardonyx

The list of modern birthstones was put into effect in 1912 whereas the list of traditional birthstones can be dated as far back as the fifteenth century. There is also a list of ancient birthstones and it shows the various stones that were accepted by different ancient cultures.
7. There are two zodiac signs that belong to August. One of them is Leo. What is is the other zodiac sign?

Answer: Virgo

The birthstone for August is the peridot. Leo is July 23 - August 21.
Virgo is August 22 - September 23. Instead of having a birthstone of peridot their birthstone is a sapphire (for the month of September).
8. What is a nickname for peridot?

Answer: Evening Emerald

It is believed that the Romans nicknamed the peridot "the evening emerald" because when the peridot is looked at through a light the green is more vivid. Many also now think that several of the emeralds worn or used by several ancient civilizations may have been peridots. Some peridot because of its green color may be mistaken for emeralds by someone who doesn't know better.
9. In Germany there is a famous cathedral with a shrine of "Three Magi", this shrine has a thousand jewels adorning it. Among those jewels are three peridots that are larger than 200 carats each. What is the name of this cathedral?

Answer: Cologne Cathedral

The Cologne Cathedral was made a world heritage site in 1996. It has been described as "best-known architectural monuments" by members of UNESCO. Construction for this building began in 1248 (it was commissioned by Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden) and the work was not completed until 1880.
10. Gem quality olivine is the gemstone peridot, what is a use for some of the olivine that is not considered gem quality?

Answer: They are used for sandblasting.

Olivine is a fairly rough mineral, it is considered hard enough to be used as an abrasive which is why it is sometimes used for sandblasting. It can be used to sandblast everything from woods to metals. It is not too hard that it would damage the wood but at the same time it is harsh enough that it cleans metals.
Olivine is also considered a safe natural alternative to sand seeing as it does not produce as much airborne dust.
