Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary Shelley's best-known work is the novel "Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus" (1818). Many people think Frankenstein is the name of the monster, however, it is actually the name of the doctor who created the monster. What was the monster's name?

Answer: the monster did not have a name

Mary Shelley did not give the monster a name. Victor was Dr Frankenstein's first name. Percy was Mary Shelley's husband's name - the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Dr Frederick Frankenstein was the character played by Gene Wilder in the movie "Young Frankenstein". Frederick was Victor's grandson who thought his grandfather's work was "doo-doo" and insisted on pronouncing his name as FRONK-en-steen.
2. The book "Addicted to Murder" by Mikaela Sitford and Steve Panter was released in 2000. It is the true story of which infamous doctor/serial killer?

Answer: Dr Harold Shipman

On January 31, 2000, British doctor/serial killer Harold Shipman was convicted of murdering 15 elderly female patients at his practice in Hyde, Manchester, between 1995 and 1998. However, according to the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2001;322:1201, 19 May), 466 deaths will be investigated in a public inquiry, although not all of these deaths are suspicious.

The actual number of victims may never be known but an audit of his practice indicates that the likely number of victims was 236.
3. In which film did Groucho Marx play Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush?

Answer: A Day at the Races

In this film, Groucho, Harpo and Chico work to save a sanitarium from bankruptcy. Groucho plays Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a veterinarian who poses as a medical doctor. According to the Turner Classic Movies website, Groucho's character was originally called Quackenbush, reminiscent of the slang term "quack" for doctor.

It was thought to be a thoroughly silly name for a doctor but then it was discovered that there were actually 37 real Dr Quackenbushes in the United States. The character name had to be changed to avoid lawsuits, much to Groucho's disappointment.

However, it is said that he grew to love the name "Hackenbush" so much that he even used it as a signature on some of his correspondence.
4. In the Sherlock Holmes stories, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based the character of Sherlock Holmes upon a doctor he knew. Which of the following persons was Sherlock Holmes based on?

Answer: Joseph Bell

The main source of inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes was Dr Joseph Bell, who was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's professor of medicine at Edinburgh University. Conan Doyle also served as Dr Bell's clerk. Bell was a popular professor at the university as well as personal surgeon to Queen Victoria when she was in Scotland.

The actor Ian Richardson has played the character of Dr Joseph Bell in the 2001 television series "Murder Rooms" and has also played Sherlock Holmes in the 1983 television movies "The Sign of Four" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
5. What type of doctor was "Doc" Holliday, the legendary gunfighter?

Answer: dentist

"Doc" (John Henry) Holliday is perhaps most well known as a participant in the famous "gunfight at the O.K. Corral" in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881. He fought with the Earp brothers against the Clanton gang. He practised dentistry briefly in the east before moving to Arizona. Doc Holliday had tuberculosis (known as "consumption" in those days) and hoped the warm, dry desert climate would be of benefit.

In Arizona, he found a new career as a gambler and gunfighter.
6. The science-fiction television series "Lost in Space" ran from 1965 to 1968. The series begins with Dr Zachary Smith being trapped in the Robinson family's spaceship during an attempt to sabotage their mission to Alpha Centauri. His extra weight throws the spaceship off course. Who played the role of Dr Smith?

Answer: Jonathon Harris

Believe it or not, Carroll O'Connor was originally considered for the role of Dr Zachary Smith! Dr Smith was originally intended to be a special guest role for a few episodes and then he was to be killed off. However, he was kept on as a regular cast member when the character proved to be popular. Guy Williams and Mark Goddard played Professor John Robinson and Major Don West in "Lost in Space".
7. In the television show "Friends", Matt Le Blanc plays the character of Joey Tribiani. Joey in turn plays Dr Drake Ramoray on which soap opera?

Answer: Days of Our Lives

There are quite a few links between the shows "Friends" and "Days of Our Lives". Several of the DOOL characters have made guest appearances on "Friends" including Jack (Matthew Ashford), Brady (Kyle Lowder), Mimi (Farah Fath) and Cassie (Alexis Thorpe). Jennifer Aniston plays Rachel Green on "Friends". Her real-life father, John Aniston, plays Victor Kiriakis on "Days of Our Lives".
8. Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen murdered his wife Cora in order to be with his lover, Ethel Le Neve. How did he kill Cora?

Answer: he poisoned her with hyoscine

After the murder, Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve fled to Canada by ship. Ethel was disguised as a boy and they posed as father and son. However, the captain was suspicious and radioed the ship's owners to report his concerns. They were arrested upon arrival in Quebec. It was the first time that the recently invented wireless telegraph was used to catch a murderer.
9. "The Fugitive" is the story of Dr Richard Kimble who is accused and convicted of the murder of his wife, despite his claim that he witnessed the murder by an intruder. What was the name of the real-life doctor upon whom the 1960's television show and the 1993 movie were based?

Answer: Samuel Sheppard

In 1954 Dr Sam Sheppard was convicted of the murder of his pregnant wife Marilyn and served ten years. Well-known lawyer, F. Lee Bailey won Sheppard a second trial and he was subsequently acquitted in 1966. Although "The Fugitive" was based on the Sheppard case, Dr Sheppard never ran from the authorities.

In the late 1990's, Sam Sheppard Jr attempted to have his father proved innocent using recently developed DNA techniques but was not successful. The actor David Jansen played the character of Richard Kimble. Sam Gerard was the US Marshal who pursued the fugitive doctor.
