Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which sport uses the expression 'out for a duck'?

Answer: Cricket

'Out for a duck' means that the batsman is out having scored 0 (zero). It is said that the expression arose because the '0', when being recorded, resembled a duck egg.
Cricket has a number of odd expressions associated with it, such as 'silly mid off', which mean absolutely nothing to anyone like me!
2. What would you do with a ducking stool?

Answer: Punish somebody

The ducking stool was a punishment generally only used on women. Its use goes back to at least the 16th century, and was discontinued in England early in the 19th century. You could be ducked for being a gossip, or for prostitution or bearing an illegitimate child.

It was sometimes used also in cases of witchcraft. The stool consisted of a chair on a long pole, which could be raised and lowered into water. The length of time for which the victim was 'ducked' varied according to the severity of the crime.
3. Bombay Duck is something you might find in an Indian restaurant. What is it?

Answer: Dried fish

'Bombay Duck' is a dried fish made from the bummalo, or marine lizard fish. These fish are found in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. It is served as a starter or accompaniment, and is very salty with a strong smell.
4. Which actress still finds herself, many years on, referred to as 'Duck Face'?

Answer: Anna Chancellor

One of the top films of 1994, 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', featured Anna Chancellor as 'Henrietta', Hugh Grant's ex-fiancee. Her nickname in the film was 'Duck Face' and despite a distinguished subsequent career she seems unlikely ever to shake this off. She is said still to be greeted by quacking noises on occasion, which must be annoying after so many years.
5. What is a DUKW?

Answer: An amphibious vehicle

DUKWs were produced by the USA during WW2 as 6-wheeled amphibious vehicles for transporting men and goods over land and water. The name came from the terminology used by the manufacturers rather than an acronym.
D = designed in 1942
U = utility
K = Front Wheel Drive
W = 2 powered rear axles.
6. Which item of Australian currency features a duck-billed platypus?

Answer: 20c coin

The coin has a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and a platypus on the reverse.
Platypuses are one of the only two egg-laying mammals in the world; the other is the echidna. They are both found only in Australia and New Guinea.
7. In 'Sesame Street', who sings to his 'Rubber Duckie'?

Answer: Ernie

Ernie and his friend Bert are two of the central characters in 'Sesame Street'. Ernie is the naughty one who is always wanting to do something, (generally annoying), while Bert usually tries to talk him out of it.
8. What's the name of Huey, Dewey and Louie's grand uncle?

Answer: Scrooge McDuck

Scrooge McDuck was created in 1947 and named after the Dickens character 'Ebenezer Scrooge'. He appears in Disney cartoon films and comic books, and his character has changed over the years from being a miser to being a brave - but thrifty - hero.
Scrooge is the uncle of Donald Duck and the grand uncle of Huey, Dewey and Louie.
9. What is Donald Duck's middle name?

Answer: Fauntleroy

Sailor-suited Donald Duck was created by Disney in 1934 and is famed for his bad temper and virtually unintelligible speech. Along with Mickey Mouse he is one of Disney's best loved and longest lasting characters. Donald's first appearance in a movie was in 'The Wise Little Hen'.
10. If I bought some duck trousers, what would I have acquired?

Answer: Cotton canvas trousers

I would have bought some trousers, probably white, made of a light but strong cotton canvas fabric.
'Duck' is a plain woven canvas fabric made in different weight for different purposes. The heaviest is used for things such as hammocks, with items such as sneakers and tents using a lighter version.
