Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I suppose a logical place to start for a quiz relating to the word "duck" would be our feathered friend. Ducks are a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae which includes about 146 species. Which of the following birds are also members of Anatidae?

Answer: Swans and geese

Different species of ducks, swans, and geese are found throughout planet Earth and they are known for their swimming abilities while floating high on top of the water. Certain ducks like the blue-winged teal are classified as dabbling ducks because they feed on the surface of land or water whereas diving ducks like the tufted duck feed many feet beneath the surface of water.
2. Possibly due to their cute appearance and how they walk, ducks are often the subject of jokes and stories. Which author of a popular tale involving a duck made the following statement? "Being born in a duck yard does not matter, if only you are hatched from a swan's egg."

Answer: Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was a prolific Danish author of the 19th century notable for works like "The Little Mermaid", "The Emperor's New Clothes", and "The Ugly Duckling". First published in print form in 1843, "The Ugly Duckling" was made into a musical composition by Sergei Prokofiev in 1914 and an animated film by Disney in 1939.
3. In addition to literature, the mighty duck also features in the title of a 1992 movie starring Emilio Estevez. Taking its name from this movie, in what magical city did a team join the National Hockey League in 1993?

Answer: Anaheim

Not surprisingly, the three "Mighty Ducks" movies of the 1990s were released by Walt Disney Pictures which is a division of the Walt Disney Company that founded the hockey team the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993. The team shortened its name to the Anaheim Ducks in 2006, and in 2007 they won their first Stanley Cup.
4. The rubber duck is a common toy for children at bath time. Which television character was known for singing to and carrying around his rubber duck?

Answer: Ernie from "Sesame Street"

In 1970, the song "Rubber Duckie", sung by Ernie (who was voiced by Jim Henson), reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and it was followed up by several other songs related to Ernie's rubber duck. Rubber ducks are typically yellow and made with a vinyl plastic but they are often decorated with cultural designs and are popular as tourist souvenirs.

In 2013, the rubber duck became the 53rd inductee to the American National Toy Hall of Fame which was founded in 1998.
5. Our next duck-related question is about an individual that achieved an aviation first. Which of the following did Joseph Duckworth accomplish on July 27, 1943 in an AT-6 single engine trainer aircraft near the city of Galveston, Texas?

Answer: He flew through the eye of a hurricane.

Joseph Duckworth was a colonel in the United States Air Force and he was known as the "Father of Instrument Flight". His work assisted the Air Force in reducing its casualties from instrument and pilot error, which at a time was actually higher than casualties suffered from combat. Regarding the incorrect options, the first nonstop around-the-world flight was completed by James Gallagher in 1949, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947, and Hubert Latham was the first to ditch an airplane into the sea in 1909.
6. While ducks can be found all over the world there may be only one country with Duck Mountain Provincial Park. In what nation could you find this park in which you could climb Baldy Mountain and see the Assiniboine River?

Answer: Canada

Interestingly, there are areas in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan that are called Duck Mountain Provincial Park. The parks are known for their flora and fauna diversity and within their borders one can find varieties of spruce, larch, fir, pine, aspen, poplar, and birch as well as mammals like moose, black bear, grey wolf, and coyote.
7. Capcom is well-known for its video game franchises like "Mega Man", "Street Fighter", and "Resident Evil" so it may be surprising that the company's best-selling title on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Gameboy was a game with 'duck' in the title. What game, first released in 1989, followed the adventures of Scrooge McDuck as he traveled the world collecting treasure to become the world's richest duck?

Answer: DuckTales

"DuckTales" exceeded more than one million units in sales on both the NES and Gameboy and it was based on the Disney television series of the same. Like many popular franchises, "DuckTales" spawned a sequel four years later and in 2013 a remastered version was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.
8. Many animals feature prominently in different religious traditions and texts. In fact, the duck is actually mentioned several times in the Christian Bible and it was one of the birds that Noah released from the ark to see if the flood had subsided.

Answer: False

Ducks are not specifically mentioned anywhere in the Bible. Possibly the closest reference to birds like ducks would be Leviticus 20:25 which mentions that any animal or bird that moves along the ground as being unclean. The birds that Noah released from the ark were actually a raven and a dove.
9. Since ducks aren't a very common pet among celebrities many have started to take pictures of themselves with a 'duck face'. Which celebrity released a book titled with her name and the word "Selfish" in 2015 that comprised hundreds of selfie pictures, many with a classic 'duck face'?

Answer: Kim Kardashian

A 'duck face' is a pose with one's lips pressed together typically in a pouty demeanor. Seemingly unlike everything else that she has done, the book "Kim Kardashian Selfish" was not a commercial success as it sold just 32,000 copies in its first three months of release.
10. Our final duck question will be for the kids. The game "Duck, Duck, Goose" is common with young children and it involves one person walking around a circle tapping on people's heads. What must the person that has been designated as the goose try to do or they will be 'it'?

Answer: Tag the person that called them a goose before he/she runs around the circle and sits down.

The bigger the circle in the game of "Duck, Duck, Goose", the more of an opportunity the goose will have to chase and tag the individual that had tagged him/her. If the player that was 'it' is able to run around the circle and sit down in the goose's previous spot before being tagged then the goose will be the next player 'it'.

However, if the player that is 'it' is tagged by the goose then he/she will be 'it' for another round.
