Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On February 3 1865, an attempt was made to end the U.S. Civil War. It involved a meeting between President Lincoln and Secretary of State Seward of the United States, and Robert Hunter, John Campbell, and Alexander Stephens of the Confederacy. What was this meeting that ended after only four hours with no side willing to make concessions for the other?

Answer: Hampton Roads Peace Conference

The conference was actually held aboard a Union transport ship, the River Queen, off Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Confederate delegates would only discuss an independent Confederate States of America whereas Lincoln's aims were to cease the fighting, emancipate the slaves, and dissolve the Confederacy.
2. Which author wrote the following short stories: "The Capital of the World", "Old Man at the Bridge", "Hills Like White Elephants", and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Other short stories by Hemingway include "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", "A Clean, Well-lighted Place", "Fathers and Sons", and "After the Storm". Hemingway is probably best known for his numerous novels and his terse, on-the-surface style of writing.
3. There are two major groups of islands in the world known as "Channel Islands." One of these groups is located in the English Channel while the other is located off a U.S. state. Off what state will one find Channel Islands National Park which includes the islands of Anacapa, San Miguel, and Santa Cruz?

Answer: California

The Channel Islands off California run for 160 miles along the coast near Los Angeles. One hundred forty-five of the 2000 species of plants and animals located there are not found anywhere else in the world. Scuba diving is a major attraction off the Channel Islands.
4. The U.S. election of 1872 was won by Republican Ulysses S. Grant over the Democratic nominee Horace Greeley. A lesser known fact is that the first woman ever to run for President (Equal Rights Party) occurred in this election. Who was this woman, overshadowed in history by her more well known running mate, Frederick Douglass?

Answer: Victoria Woodhull

She received a miniscule percentage of the popular vote and no electoral votes. Interestingly, she was not legally eligible to vote, was only 34 years old on Election Day (she would have been 35 when inaugurated if elected), and was in jail on charges of indecency on Election Day.
5. The U.S. Senate is not as restricted as the House of Representatives on minimizing an individual's "floor time" on an issue. A senator's filibuster (prolonged speech to delay action or debate) can be limited, however, by a certain vote of the Senate. What is this vote to end debate on a certain issue known as, and in March 2005 what ratio of the full Senate's vote was needed to end the filibuster?

Answer: Cloture & 3/5

Technically, the cloture rule (Rule XXII) limits consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours.
6. What lake of the United States contains Wizard Island; is one of the world's best known calderas; is the deepest lake in the United States; and has been designated as a national park?

Answer: Crater Lake

From the hint, TOM Thumb + Sammy BAUGH = Tombaugh. After discovering Pluto, Tombaugh did research about Mars until his death in 1997.
9. Along with being the last reported person to talk to Mohandas Gandhi before his death, this woman was the first woman photographer to be attached to the U.S. armed forces; was married to Erskine Caldwell; and wrote the book "Halfway to Freedom."

10. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Quincy Adams, Jackson, ______, WH Harrison, ______, Polk ... Wilson, Harding, ______, ______, FD Roosevelt, Truman ... Carter, ______, Bush, Clinton, GW Bush
