Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which word is not a horse colour?

Answer: Walnut

Horses come in many colours, including black, brown, bay (brown with black mane and tail), chestnut, palomino (blonde with a white mane and tail), grulla, grey, liver chestnut, piebald, skewbald, dapple grey, fleabitten grey, dun, roan and blue roan. They do not come in walnut. That's timber (or cake).
2. Which is not a bird?

Answer: Dugong

A dugong is like a manatee - an aquatic mammal. The others are all birds.
3. Which of the following mythical creatures does not have a human component?

Answer: Griffin

The griffin (or gryphon) was made up of lion and eagle pieces. A mermaid had a human torso and a fish tail, a centaur had a human torso and horse body and a minotaur had a bull's head and a human body.
4. You are out in the garden in an English spring. Which flower would you *not* be able to pick from a "normal" cottage garden?

Answer: Frangipani

The daffodil, snowdrop and bluebell are all spring flowers. The frangipani is tropical, and wouldn't bloom in an English spring.
5. Which of the following would you expect to hatch out of an egg?

Answer: A platypus

Calves and piglets are born in the usual mammalian fashion, and carnations grow from seed. A platypus is one of two mammals that really does hatch out of an egg. The echidna is the other one. The platypus and echidna are very primitive mammals known collectively as monotremes.
6. Which of the following pairs are not (and have never been) musical instruments?

Answer: A shoozaphone and a hoozaphone

A xylophone and a saxophone are both musical instruments. One is struck with hammers, the other is a member of the woodwind group even though it is made of brass because it has a reed. A lute is an old-fashioned stringed instrument a bit like a guitar and a flute is a wind instrument.

A guitar is strummed and a sitar is an Indian instrument plucked or twanged. I made the others up. By the way, a largaphone is also an instrument.
7. OK, you're visiting England or Australia. You meet four groups of friends. Which group would you expect to be all female?

Answer: Robyn, Terri, Lesley and Jo

The spelling is the key here. In England (and Australia), females using unisex names usually don't spell them the same way as males.

Robin is used by both sexes (Robin Hood was a man), but Robyn is used (in modern times) only by females.

Terry is almost always male, Terri is invariably female.

Leslie is about 70% male, while Lesley is 100% female.

Jo is almost always female, while Joe is always male.

Lindsay can go both ways, and it started as a male name. Georgie is a diminutive of George and can also go either way. Gael and Finlay are almost exclusively male names.

Jake is almost always male (it can be short for Jacqueline), Anna is always female these days (I think there was an ancient Celt or Norseman with that name) and Andy is usually male. (Andie will be female).

Names that really can go either way include Kelly, Kerry (though Kerrie is always female), Kim and Heath.
8. Which of the following bird names does NOT have another common meaning?

Answer: Plover

Duck is not only a bird, but an action (to duck is to avoid by bobbing down) and also a cricket term. Swallow means to move food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach and to hawk something is to sell it door to door or to hunt using a hawk. As far as I know a plover is only a bird.
9. Which is not an accepted name for a swimming stroke?

Answer: The Frug

The Frug was a 1960s dance. The others are all swimming strokes. Sidestroke, backstroke and freestyle are also accepted as legitimate stroke names, as is dogpaddle!
10. Which of the following brand names is NOT in common use for items not necessarily made by that company?

Answer: Toyota

It's common for someone to say "I need a kleenex" when s/he means "I need a tissue". Ditto for someone to seek a thermos when s/he should ask for a vacuum flask or to go to buy a hoover when s/he means a vacuum cleaner. However, people wanting a Toyota mean exactly that. The generic term is a car or an automobile.
