Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If something from "The East" can be referred to as "Oriental", how can one similarly refer to something from "The West"?

Answer: Occidental

The word occidental originally comes from the Latin "occidentem", meaning western sky. the perception of what constitutes "The Orient" has changed over time, and also changes based on where the person using the term comes from. From personal experience I come from New Zealand and when we use the term "Asian" we are making a collective reference to people from countries such as China, Japan and Korea.

When I first moved to the UK I had to adjust to the fact that the term "Asian" collectively refers to people from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
2. In 1979, a live album was released called "Unleashed in the East". Who was the artist?

Answer: Judas Priest

"Unleashed in the East" was recorded in Tokyo on Priest's "Hell Bent for Leather" tour, and produced by Tom Allom. This album was also informally known as "Unleashed in the Studio", in reference to allegations that there was nothing particularly "live" about this album. These rumours were refuted by the band who only admitted to minor tweaks!
3. East Ham is a suburb in the east of London in the UK. But what does "Ham" mean in this context?

Answer: Village

For many years, West Ham UFC's home ground is Upton Park, which is in East Ham. Getting off the underground at West Ham station was not the best idea if you were going to a West Ham home game! You had to get off at Upton Park station instead. the team moved to the Olympic Stadium in 2016.
4. There is a city called East London in which of these countries?

Answer: South Africa

East London was originally known as Port Rex. It is sometimes referred to as Buffalo City.
5. East 17 was a "bad-boy" Pop/Rap band from Walthamstow in East London, UK. Why were they called East 17?

Answer: E17 is the postcode for Walthamstow

East 17 was in competition with Take That in the UK pop charts in the early to mid-1990s and were very successful commercially. However their music incorporated elements of rap and R&B which made them an arguably more interesting listening proposition than Take That for the non-teen listener.

They backed this up with a streetwise image, but eventually drug revelations from Brian Harvey led to him being sacked, with the band breaking up soon thereafter.
6. The Easter Rising happened in 1916 in which country?

Answer: Ireland

The Easter Rising involved members of the Republican movement seizing locations in Dublin and declaring an independent Irish Republic. The British authorities stamped it out quickly, and in the aftermath many arrests were made and 90 ringleaders were executed.
7. The movie "The Witches of Eastwick" was released in 1987 and starred Jack Nicholson. Who were his three leading ladies?

Answer: Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, Cher

"The Witches of Eastwick" was loosely based on a novel by John Updike. Jack Nicholson shines as Daryl Van Horne (or more correctly Horny) in one of his most overtly comic roles.
8. "Rising in the East" is a live DVD of which band playing the Budokan in Tokyo in 2005?

Answer: Judas Priest

The title "Rising in the East" is a nod to Priest's first live album which was called "Unleashed in the East". This concert was recorded not long after the band patched up their differences with legendary lead singer Rob Halford and reformed in mid-2003.
9. Outrageous Fortune is a popular NZ TV series which first aired in 2005 and was based around a family with which surname?

Answer: West

The format was adapted by an American TV network first as a pilot called "Good Behavior", and then readapted as "Scoundrels" which first aired in 2010. And yes - the only thing this question had to do with "East" was "West"!
10. The earth rotates about its axis towards which direction?

Answer: East

While most people would realise the earth revolves either to the east or the west (since it rotates around its north-south axis), it is not necessarily easy to work out which!
