Jay North (born 1951) is an actor who was best known for appearing as Dennis Mitchell in the television sitcom "Dennis the Menace", which ran on CBS from 1959 to 1963. The television show was based on Hank Ketcham's comic strip of the same name which debuted in 1951. Jay North's greatest success was as a child actor, although he did have some roles in his adult years.
4. The Corps of Discovery
Answer: North Dakota
The Corps of Discovery may be better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806). President Thomas Jefferson sent a US Army expedition under the command of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory and possible routes to the Pacific Ocean.
Although the expedition passed through several future US states, it spent more time in what is now North Dakota than any other state, including the winter of 1804-1805 spent at Fort Mandan.
5. Rob Morrow
Answer: Northern Exposure
"Northern Exposure" aired on CBS from 1990 to 1995. The show starred Rob Morrow as Dr. Joel Fleischman, a newly graduated doctor from New York who was stationed in the small town of Cicely, Alaska after the state of Alaska paid for his medical education. The show also starred Janine Turner.
6. Alfred Hitchcock
Answer: North by Northwest
"North by Northwest" is a 1959 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock that stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, and James Mason. In a case of mistaken identity, Cary Grant's character is pursued across the United States, including being nearly chased down by a crop duster and being forced to climb across part of Mount Rushmore. Hitchock's cameo (for which he is famous in his movies) is not getting on a bus in time.
7. Douglas Tompkins
Answer: The North Face
The North Face, Inc., is a American company that specializes in outdoor clothing and outdoor products such as coats, fleeces, and tents. It was founded in 1966 as a climbing equipment store in San Francisco, CA, by Douglas and Susie Tompkins. North Face products are known for their distinctive quarter circle logo.
8. Belfast
Answer: Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland was created by the United Kingdom in 1921, separating six counties in the northeast of Ireland from the rest of the island. It was thought that the residents of Northern Ireland were mostly Protestants who were interested in remaining in a union with Great Britain and not interested in joining the largely-Catholic Irish Free State.
The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
9. Frederick Cook
Answer: The North Pole
Frederick Cook (1865-1940) was an American explorer who claimed to have led the first expedition to reach the North Pole in 1908. More support is given to Robert Perry and Matthew Henson's expedition in 1909 being the first to reach the North Pole, but even this claim is not without controversy. I will not weigh in on who actually was the first person to reach the North Pole, but I will say being able to travel all the way there in such extreme conditions was and is an impressive accomplishment.
10. The American Revolution
Answer: Lord North
Frederick North, Second Earl of Guilford, (1732-1792) was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770-1782 which covers many of the years of the American Revolution. Although the loss of Britain's colonies in North America was seen as due in part to North's actions, he did have some successes as Prime Minister including his handling of the 1770 Falklands crisis. During most of his career, he was known as Lord North, not becoming the Earl of Guilford until his father's death in 1790.
