One Direction Trivia Quiz

No doubt the title of this quiz alone will attract flocks of fanatic teenage girls, but I'm afraid you'll find no mention of 'that group' in this quiz. Instead, each answer could be north, south, east or west; that is, the answer will be one direction.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the surname of the American hip-hop artist, whose hits over the years include 'Gold Digger', 'Stronger', and 'Heartless'?

Answer: West

Kanye West is one of the leading hip-hip artists in the industry, having sold millions of albums worldwide since his first album 'The College Dropout' in 2004. West previously worked as a producer for other popular artists, including Jay-Z, Mos Def and Ludacris.
2. If I'm standing right in the very centre of Australia, and want desperately to cool off and escape the stifling heat, in which direction would I need to head if I wanted to reach the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: East

Australia is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the west, the Arafura and Timor Seas to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and, funnily enough, the Southern Ocean to the south. The area of Australia south of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, is considered to be the central part of Australia, though there is no official geographical centre marked by a landmark or other such point of interest.
3. An iconic English structure located at Gateshead, near Newcastle, is known as the 'Angel of the...' what?

Answer: North

English sculptor Antony Gormley was responsible for designing the iconic Angel of the North. Motorists on the A1, a road which starts in London and runs the length of the country to Edinburgh, will see the Angel of the North overlooking the road as it makes its way through Gateshead in Tyne and Wear.
4. Which direction precedes the word 'Pacific' in the title of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical from the 1940s, based upon a novel by James A. Michener?

Answer: South

The novel 'Tales of the South Pacific' (1947) is a collection of World War II short stories by James A. Michener, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. It was adapted for the stage by Joshua Logan, with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein providing the music, and hit Broadway in 1949, which, rather interestingly, also won a Pulitzer Prize, this time for Drama.
5. Developed by Ninja Theory and released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is an action/adventure video game entitled 'Enslaved: Odyssey to the...' where?

Answer: West

Ninja Theory is a British developer, responsible for 'Heavenly Sword' and the 2013 reboot of the 'Devil May Cry' series. 'Enslaved: Odyssey to the West', set 150 years in the future, follows a group of three unlikely allies: Monkey, Trip and Pigsy. Monkey finds himself enslaved by Trip after an accident, and is forced to team up with her as they make their way west across America. 'Enslaved' was a modest success critically, though it failed to reach the publisher's sales expectations.
6. What is the name of the 2003 album by British artist Elvis Costello that opts for a more jazzy feel, compared to Costello's previous works?

Answer: North

'North' reached the top spot on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart in America, but didn't fare as well in the UK. No singles were released from the album.
7. The 1952 novel by John Steinbeck that centres on the Hamilton family and the Trask family in the Salinas Valley region of California is entitled ' ___ of Eden'?

Answer: East

Considered by Steinbeck himself as his greatest work, 'East of Eden' follows the Hamilton and Trask families and their lives in an early twentieth century setting. The novel contains numerous allusions to the Bible, even down to the title, which was taken from a verse about Cain and Abel, the biblical brothers.
8. Referring to a specific area of the United States as well as to an era of US colonial history was 'The Wild...' what?

Answer: West

Also popularly known as the Old West, this era of American history was characterised by cowboys, the gold rush and colonialism, amongst other things. It was this period of time between 1700 and 1900 that allowed America to prosper and flourish, and become one of the most influential regions in the world.

The term 'western', which emerged from this, gave rise to the many and varied films and television series taking place in this time and region.
9. In 2011, the African country of Sudan split into two countries. The newly formed republic was named ___ Sudan.

Answer: South

Southern Sudan was an autonomous region of Sudan that declared itself independent in 2011, thus becoming a new country, the Republic of South Sudan, after a referendum that saw nearly 99% of the voting population vote in favour of independence. Despite this, South Sudan has faced significant political turmoil, and warring factions have continued to operate in and around the country.
10. Adapted from Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' is a Broadway musical, which later became an Academy Award-winning film, entitled '___ Side Story'.

Answer: West

Arthur Laurents teamed up with acclaimed lyricist Stephen Sondheim and musical maestro Leonard Bernstein in 1957 to adapt 'Romeo and Juliet' for Broadway. In 1961, it hit the silver screen, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the two central characters, Maria Nuņez and Tony Wyzek, respectively.

The musical (and, indeed, the film) follows the basic story of 'Romeo and Juliet' with a pair of lovers from opposite groups trying to maintain a relationship whilst their respective factions continue to oppose each other.

The original musical won two Tony awards, whilst the film won ten Academy Awards.
