Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cartoon series, 'The Magic School Bus', was based on what original material?

Answer: a book

The original book series of the same name was written by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. The high rating children's television program ran from 1994 to 1997. It combined entertainment with education in a new way, using celebrities to voice characters. Miss Fizzle, the teacher who takes her class on the bus adventures, was voiced by the wonderful Lily Tomlin.
2. In Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar", who was the character that gave "the most unkindest cut of all"?

Answer: Brutus

Shakespeare followed the traditional Roman history for his play "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar", written about 1599. Julius Caesar was shocked that his friend Marcus Brutus was amongst the conspirators who stabbed him.

Mark Antony delivers a funeral speech for Caesar with the famous remark:
"This was the most unkindest cut of all. For when the noble Caesar saw him stab, Ingratitude, more strong than traitors' arms, Quite vanquished him."(Act 3, Scene II)
3. Name the Muppet character who usually played the drums on 'The Muppet Show'.

Answer: Animal

The Muppets, a cross between puppets and marionettes, were created by Jim Henson. Originally they were most known for being used on the children's show "Sesame Street" but Henson wanted to be seen as more than a children's entertainer, so he created a more adult style with two Muppet specials in 1974 and 1975. This led to five seasons of the acclaimed "The Muppet Show" from 1976 to 1981.
The Animal character was the epitome of the wild drummer for "Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem", the show band. He was my favourite character, beating Miss Piggy by a whisker!
4. Daniel David Palmer performed the first recorded chiropractic adjustment in 1886. Before he was a chiropractor, what was his profession?

Answer: magnetic healer

D.D. Palmer was practising magnetic healing in Davenport, Iowa, when he supposedly slapped the building's janitor on the back and improved the janitor's hearing. Believing that the human body had a strong supply of natural healing power, Palmer studied adjustments to the spine to alleviate a variety of symptoms.

In 1897 he founded "Palmer College of Chiropractic". His son Bartlett was one of the first students. In 1906 Palmer sold his school to his son; shortly after he was prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license under new medical laws in Iowa.

He moved west, opening more colleges on the way.
5. Which Pokemon character had their name appear in the subtitle of in "Pokemon The First Movie"?

Answer: Mewtwo

Mewtwo is a Pokémon, a pocket monster that looks a bit like a purple kangaroo. It is a fictional character created by Ken Sugimori, for video games. "Pokemon The First Movie", directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, was released in 1998.
This movie is Japanese anime, a name derived from the word "animation". It is a mix of hand-drawn and computer animation. The original Japanese voice actors were replaced by English speaking voice actors for Western release. Jay Goede voiced Mewtwo in English for the movie.
6. Who was the first skateboarder to land a perfect "900"?

Answer: Tony Hawk

Tony Hawk's nickname is "Birdman", and when you see video of him competing you understand why. He was the first skateboarder to land a "900", a trick involving the completion of two-and-a-half mid-air revolutions on a skateboard, Tony Hawk describes himself as a hyperactive child, who won his first skateboarding title at the age of 14.

A video game series based on his skateboarding, titled "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater", debuted in 1999 and has had 18 more titles so far, including ten main-series titles, four spin-offs, and four repackages. Tony Hawk performed his last competitive "900" on June 27, 2016, at the age of 48 years!
7. In 1854 Australia's miners rebelled against the high cost of mining licence fees. What commodity were they mining?

Answer: Gold

Gold was discovered in Australia in 1851, starting a series of goldrushes. On 30 November 1854 gold miners from Ballarat in Victoria, protesting the exorbitant cost of mining licences, set up an armed stockade on the Eureka grounds. The rebellion was quickly put down by overwhelming numbers of British troops and the ring leaders were imprisoned or hung. This Eureka Stockade was the only real armed rebellion in Australian history.

The lasting symbol of this rebellion is the Eureka Flag, a stylized Southern Cross on a light blue background.

Some feel the flag of a proposed Australian republic should be the original Eureka design.
8. Which continent has the Great Rift Valley?

Answer: Africa

The Great Rift Valley is a massive fracture in the crust of the earth in the eastern part of Africa. It is divided into the East African Rift that follows the Red Sea to the end before turning inland into the Ethiopian highlands and the Western Rift, which is bordered by some of the highest mountains in Africa.
Famously, our distant hominid ancestors are thought to have developed in the Great Rift Valley when it was sheltered from the ice that covered most of the Earth. It is often called "The Cradle of Mankind".
9. In the Bible, God directs Moses to part what sea?

Answer: Red Sea

In Exodus 14, God allows Moses to part the Red Sea to allow the Israelites to escape from slavery in Egypt. This is a spectacular moment in the Bible and has been re-created in many movies. It was pivotal in helping the Israelite people reach the promised land as their Egyptian pursuers were swept away.
The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean. It would have been a shallow arm of the Red Sea between Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula that would have been most likely to have been parted for the escape.
10. What is thought to be the largest mountain in our Solar System?

Answer: Olympus Mons

Olympus Mons is an enormous shield volcano, created by super heated lava, on the planet Mars. It is roughly about two and a half times Mount Everest's height above sea level and would cover most of France if it was on Earth. It is located in Mars' western hemisphere.
Olympus Mons had been known to astronomers since the late 1800s as Nix Olympica (Latin for "Olympic Snow") as it was thought to be a large area of snow or ice. It was suspected that it might be a mountain well before space probes confirmed this.
