Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Walt Disney's 1938 cartoon show 'Mother Goose Goes Hollywood', what star was caricaturized as Little Bo Peep?

Answer: Katharine Hepburn

The short film was a send-up of several Mother Goose stories, using caricatures of many of the leading stars of the day.
The Marx Brothers, Oliver and Hardy, Edward G. Robinson, Greta Garbo, Charles Laughton, Spencer Tracy were all portrayed as cartoon characters. The film was part of the 'Silly Symphony' series produced by the Walt Disney Productions.
2. What former heavyweight boxing champion was rejected for the role of Apollo Creed in the 1976 film 'Rocky' because he made Sylvester Stallone look too small?

Answer: Ken Norton

Norton fought Muhammed Ali three times, and beat him once, losing the third in a controversial split decision. He retired in 1981 with an impressive 42 wins, seven losses and a draw. He was a large man, standing 191cms (6'3"), dwarfing Stallone's 175cms (5'9").

After he retired, he starred in 'Mandingo'. His 1970 fight with Chuck Wepner inspired Stallone to write the 'Rocky' movie, but Norton did not take up the role of Apollo Creed - instead Carl Weathers took up the cudgels.
3. In the original Hippocratic oath, by whom did doctors swear to uphold the standard of professional behaviour?

Answer: Apollo

The Oath was written in Greek, in the 4th or 5th century, BC.

The first part of the Oath reads-

"I swear by Apollo the physician, and Asclepius, and Hygieia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses as my witnesses, that, according to my ability and judgement, I will keep this Oath and this contract."

Doctor/patient confidentiality, which we take for granted these days, also gets mentioned- " And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession, as well as outside my profession in my intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets."
4. What TV show featured Pottsylvanian spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale?

Answer: The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show

The brains of the outfit, Rocket J. (Rocky) Squirrel and his rather dim but lovable friend, Bullwinkle J. Moose, have adventures, and try to avoid capture by the baddies, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. The show was set in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, and has spawned various media - movies, video games, commercials, comic books and even Hot Wheels model cars.
5. H A Largelamb, an anagram pseudonym of a famous inventor, was one of the founders of 'National Geographic' magazine. Who was he?

Answer: Alexander Graham Bell

Bell is a very familiar name, but some of his exploits are not quite as well known. In addition to founding and contributing to 'National Geographic', he developed a speedboat, constructed an early version of air-conditioning called an ice-stove, another invention that led to the iron lung and even translated Mohawk spoken language into written English.

Oh, he also invented the telephone!
6. Which of these presidents was NOT born in Ohio?

Answer: Richard Nixon

Nixon was born in California, in 1913 and died in 1994.

Hayes (1822-93) was born in Delaware, Ohio. Grant (1822-85) was born in the tiny township of Point Pleasant. Garfield (1831-81) was born in Moreland Hills, a suburb of Cleveland.

Ohio has had its fair share of presidents- in addition to those mentioned, the state produced Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Taft and Warren Harding.
7. What country was liberated by Bernardo O'Higgins in 1818?

Answer: Chile

The Chilean War of Independence took place between 1810 and 1826, partially caused by the actions of Napoleon Bonaparte in Europe. O'Higgins led the rebel movement against the Royalists, resulting in Argentina's independence. He was appointed Supreme Director of Chile in 1817 and was deposed in 1823.

He moved to Peru, where he became involved in their struggle for independence, joining Simon Bolivar's army.
8. What does a deltiologist collect?

Answer: postcards

Postcards have been around for as long as postage stamps, with the first one being mailed in 1840. They differ from stamps in that they are issued by private companies, with no regulatory controls. Their subject matter is very broad, ranging from comic caricatures, to celebrities, to scenery. For this reason, many collectors specialise in a particular area.

A stamp collector is a philatelist, tegestologists collect beer coasters, and a phillumenist would have a collection of matchboxes and matchbooks.
9. Vichyssoise - cold potato and leek soup - was reputedly first created in 1917 by chef Louis Diat in what city?

Answer: New York

Frenchman, Louis Diat, was a chef at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York, and he mixed potato and leek soup with cream and chicken stock and served it cold. He called it 'Crème Vichyssoise Glacée', later shortened to 'Vichyssoise', taking its name from the French city of Vichy.

As with many recipes, there are some doubts about their history, but this origin is the most widely accepted.
10. What song about a rat became a hit single?

Answer: Ben

The song was performed by Michael Jackson, for the movie of the same name. The movie, released in 1972, tells the story of a young boy who befriends a rat, named Ben. The movie enjoyed limited success, but the single hit the top of several charts, and was even nominated for an Oscar. Jackson was only 14 years old when he recorded it.
