Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In science, the number 50 is the atomic number of a common metal on the periodic table of elements. Which of these has the chemical symbol "Sn", and is known for its uses in manufacturing and coating to keep other metals from rusting?

Answer: tin

Tin has many uses because it is a flexible metal often combined with other metals to prevent corrosion. It is used in creating pipes, lining for windows, coating steel containers, making dinnerware, and is even used to make some musical instrument parts like organ pipes.
2. Let's take a look at geography. On August 21, 1959, the United States officially welcomed and unionized its 50th state. What is the name of the 50th United States' state that is entirely made up of islands?

Answer: Hawaii

At its time of unionization, Hawaii was the only state to be entirely made up of islands. Hawaii's coastline stretches about 750 miles, and although it's small compared to other areas of the United States, it is ranked among the states that have the highest density of population.
3. Our next 50th interest is in animals. Insects may be small, but they can be very strong. Which one of these insects can lift about 50 times its own weight?

Answer: the ant

Ironically, insects get their strength from their size. Ants are able to lift 50 times their weight because of their ratio to surface area and volume. Their muscles are proportional to their middle section allowing them to lift more and pull up to 30 times their weight. They also do not have much body mass to slow them down.
4. The first book of the Bible has 50 chapters. What is the name of the Biblical book that tells the stories of creation, Noah's flood, and Abraham?

Answer: Genesis

The book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible and believed to be the first book written by Moses. In fifty chapters, it starts out with the story of creation and man's sin, and ends with the story of Joseph and the children of Israel. It also tells the stories of Noah, the tower of Babel, Abraham, and Jacob.

The topics in Genesis have long been a subject of interest for the science of Creationism, history of the Jews, and Christianity.
5. Pull out the popcorn and let's watch movies! Known for its mascot of Mickey Mouse, the Disney company pioneered the animation movie industry. Which one of these films was Disney's 50th animated motion picture?

Answer: Tangled

In 2010, Disney released its 50th animated classic, "Tangled". Tangled is the Disney version of the story of Rapunzel. A witch discovers a flower that will make her young forever, but one day the queen finds this flower and steals it to save herself from death.

A baby is born and the girl's hair has the same mystical power as the flower had. In order to maintain her youth, the witch kidnaps the princess and locks her away in a tower. Every year the king and the queen light floating lanterns in hopes of their daughter's return. Rapunzel is eventually rescued by a prince and reunited with her family. "The Black Cauldron" was Disney's 25th animated classic, released in 1985. "Lady and the Tramp" was Disney's 15th animated piece, released in 1955. "Snow White" was Disney's first animated motion picture, released in 1937.
6. Fame sometimes has misfortunes. At age 50, celebrity Bob Crane became the victim of a homicide that is known for being one of the longest cold cases in history. Which television series did the popular actor star in that was based on a World War II prisoner of war camp in Germany?

Answer: Hogan's Heroes

Bob Crane was known for his role as Colonel Hogan in the television series "Hogan's Heroes". He also founded later the "Bob Crane Show". While on tour for a theatrical play in June 1978, Bob Crane was found murdered in an apartment. Police never found the weapon, although it was guessed it was a tripod camera because Crane had been strangled to death with an electrical cord. Cranes' murderer was never found.
7. Roll out the royal red carpet for some golden romances! Fiftieth wedding anniversaries are nicknamed "golden anniversaries". Which one of these royal couples had a marriage that lasted over 50 years?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their golden anniversary in 1997. They became the first British monarchs in history to celebrate a diamond anniversary in 2007, which is sixty years of marriage. Both monarchs are the great-great grandchildren of Queen Victoria, one of England's longest-reigning monarchs.

Another famous couple in history that has celebrated a golden anniversary is the second United States president and his wife, Abigail Adams, a very influential lady of her time. Although a famous romance in history, Napoleon and Josephine divorced but they remained friends until his death. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette met an untimely death when they were executed during the French Revolution.

Answer: Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley's career took off in the 1950s after he started recording with the company Sun Records. Within a very short time, Elvis became a star known as the "King" of rock and roll. His musical career was interrupted in 1958 for a short time when he was drafted into the military. Elvis returned, however, and wrote many more hits during the 1960s.
9. Although it was a highlight era for science, music, television, and sports, the 1950s was a scary political time in the United States. What were the Red Scare and McCarthyism known for?

Answer: hunts for threats of potential communism

After World War II, the fear of communism reached a high point during the political clashes between the superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. There was fear that the development of nuclear weapons would cause mass nuclear warfare. A common practice of homeowners included building bomb shelters in case of an attack. Senator Joseph McCarthy started "witch hunts", or court hearings, to find spies or potential communists. Because of his harsh tactics, he was eventually censured by the US Senate.
10. Now for the final card up the sleeve! In hobbies, the game "UNO" has some tense competition. The objective of the game is to keep the person from one card at the end from going out with a winning score of "0". However the players with cards after the game have penalty points. In "UNO", which card is worth 50 points if it is not discarded by the end of the game?

Answer: the wild card

In "UNO", players have to play a card that matches the number, color, or symbol of the card that was played previously. The "wild" card is one of the most valuable cards because it can change the color or cause another player to draw four. However, if the wild cards are not used by the end of the game and are still in a player's hand, they are worth the most penalty points in a tournament.
