Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Movies: This superhero first tried to heal the world as a neurosurgeon. After an accident damaged his hands beyond repair, he searched the globe for healing. After coming in contact with the Sorcerer Supreme, which Marvel Avenger became master of mystical spells and martial arts?

Answer: Dr. Strange

Before his accident, Strange was an arrogant neurosurgeon who took high-risk cases other doctors could not operate on. When his own accident left him inoperable, Strange searched the globe desperately for a cure; without his hands, he lost his fame, career, and his friends.

He heard stories of black magic and came in contact with the Sorcerer Supreme. At first, the Sorcerer rejected Strange for his attitude. Eventually, Strange's determination paid off and he became skilled in martial arts and spells. During his training, he became compassionate towards others' needs.

He acquired several magical trinkets such as his cloak, that protected him in combat. Later he set up a shop at 177A Bleecker Street, Greenwich Village, New York City. His shop would be a portal from where he would defend the universe from threats.
2. Literature: Charles Dickens was a writer known for his classics, "A Christmas Carol" and "Oliver Twist". What did he do in his classical works, to bring attention to many misunderstood health conditions that were prevalent in his day?

Answer: made characters with the conditions in his novels

Charles Dickens authored more than eighteen novels in his lifetime. Many of his novels brought attention to the poor conditions of London with various characters.

Dickens suffered several health conditions and was compassionate towards the health conditions of his literary peers. He often kept in contact with his friends on his book tours through letters, detailing his health conditions. The majority of his novels contained at least one "ill" character that shared a health condition similar to Dickens' health or that of one of his acquaintances. He had characters that had asthma, epilepsy, dyslexia, drug addictions, dystonia, and many other conditions that were not understood at the time. One of his most famous characters, "Tiny Tim", brought awareness to the crippled and disabled.
3. Science: Edward Jenner, "the father of immunology", is credited with developing the world's first vaccine in 1796. Using the observation of cattle, what disease did he help vaccinate against?

Answer: smallpox

At the time of Jenner's invention, sixty percent of the population had been infected with a death rate between ten and twenty percent. There was no cure for the fever or rash-like symptoms. Jenner began studying cowpox and cattle, which suffered similar effects to the human virus, in hopes of finding a treatment. From prior observations, people who had been exposed to cowpox had been immune to the smallpox virus. Jenner injected the cowpox virus into an eight-year-old boy and noted that the boy did not get smallpox. From his experiment, he developed a vaccine and started treating others free of charge.
4. Colors: Blue is a primary color that has been used in many hospitals. How has the sight of the color blue been proven useful for cardiology patients?

Answer: reduces blood pressure and rapid heart rates

The color blue has been associated with calmness and serenity. Hospitals often use blue in surgical settings to give patients a clean and calm feeling. In cardiology units, blue has been used to reduce stress.

In a study in the University of Surrey, blue light used in patients' rooms, caused blood vessels and arteries to relax. The calming effects of the light also relaxed the patients. Doctors noticed patients associated with the blue-colored surroundings had lower blood pressure and calmer heart rates.
5. Animals: Kisses make everything better. According to research at the University of Florida at Gainsville, which family pet's saliva did they discover could potentially heal wounds faster?

Answer: dog

Researchers and scientists from the University of Florida at Gainesville discovered a protein called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in dog saliva. In their experiments, they treated wounds with the protein and found that those treated with NGF healed twice as fast as untreated wounds. Their research concluded that if a dog licks a human wound, it could lead to a faster recovery.

It is not recommended to treat wounds with dog saliva as sound medical advice, but it does give an appreciation for our furry friends.
6. Sports: Amy Van Dyken, the first woman to win four gold medals at the Olympics in swimming, started swimming at six years old to overcome an asthma condition. What did she do to help other children battling childhood illnesses?

Stones had the ability to treat emotions and relieve symptoms, combined with herbal practices. Rose quartz was known as the "love stone". It was believed to treat anger, depression, and broken hearts.

Answer: a foster care system

Sir Nicolas Winton was planning a trip to Switzerland when Jewish welfare workers reached out to him for help. At the time, the Nazis were in the early stages of taking over territories. The effects of rationing, limitations, lost homes, lost jobs, and fear were being felt by Jewish families. Winton saw the need to rescue the children before the situation escalated.

He established false passports, transportation, finances, and homes for children to be relocated, in hopes they could be reunited with their families later.

He transported as many as he could before the borders were closed. It would be the last time many of the children would see their parents before the Jews were sent to concentration camps. He kept track of all the children he rescued before and during the war in a scrapbook.

His deeds were not known until British media picked up on the story 50 years later. He was reunited with many of the children he saved on a television show in 1988. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2003 for his acts of kindness.

Shortly after writing the song, Michael Jackson created a charity in 1992 called the "Heal the World Foundation". The organization focused on improving the lives of children and educating children on how to help others. It donated millions to drug abuse education, disadvantaged children, and children's organ transplants. Jackson used the organization as a promotional stage to fight child abuse and world hunger.
