Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do these have in common- rhea, cassowary, dodo?

Answer: flightless

The extinct dodo, the cassowary and rhea are all flightless birds. The dodo is the only one that is extinct (while the Lesser Rhea is extinct, the Common Rhea is not) and all three are classified in different orders and therefore different families (cassowary is in order Casuariiformes, rhea is in Rheiformes and dodo was in Columbiformes, closely related to the pigeon and dove).

Therefore, the only similarity listed is that they are (or were) flightless.
2. What was the name of the Wright Brothers' famous record-setting plane?

Answer: Flyer

On December 17, 1903 at Kittyhawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered, controlled flight in an aircraft in their "Flyer". Since their pioneering flight, aviation has developed considerably, but interestingly, basic controls of aircraft are fairly much the same as those devised by the Wright brothers.

The brothers continued to develop their ideas and by the end of 1905 they had made the world's first practical flying craft and were doing figure-eights and staying aloft for half an hour. (Reference and a recommended source of further information, www.first-to-fly.com)
3. What movie of 1994 starred Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant?

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

In the British-made "Four Weddings and a Funeral", relatively little-known Hugh Grant played Englishman Charles who falls for American Carrie (MacDowell). The supporting cast of Charles' friends and family make a brilliantly funny and poignant story as we follow their lives through four weddings and a funeral.
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986)is about a high school boy who goes to great lengths to take a day off school. "Father of the Bride" (1991) starred Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. "Father Hood" (1993) starred Sabrina Lloyd and Patrick Swayze.
4. Sepal, anther, style and stigma are all parts of what?

Answer: flower

The anther contains the pollen, the male reproductive cells, and often is supported on the end of a long filament. The stigma and style are part of the female apparatus of a flower and sit atop the ovary where they receive the pollen for fertilisation. The sepals, the outermost part of a flower, are the small leaves directly underneath the petals.
5. In Greek mythology, what did Prometheus bring back to Earth after Zeus took it away?

Answer: fire

Prometheus first angered Zeus by trying to make a fool of him with a trick sacrifice. Later, Prometheus, out of pity for the mortals, stole fire from Zeus and gave it to the mortals. With this and his other gifts, they flourished and developed. Zeus punished Prometheus by shackling him to a mountain where he stayed and was pecked at daily by Zeus' eagle until he was rescued 13 generations later.
6. What element is represented by F on the periodic table?

Answer: fluorine

Its atomic number is 9. Fluorine is a toxic gas and the most reactive element.

By the way, iron is represented as Fe,
Francium (number 87) is Fr,
and fluoride is the negative ion of fluorine and only exists in a compound with another element, though it is represented by the letter F in chemical formulas, it does not appear on the periodic table and is not the correct answer to the question as stated.
7. What F can be measured in Hertz?

Answer: frequency

Frequency is the number of repetitions of a complete wave form in a given time frame. Hertz is the measure of the number of oscillations (or complete wave forms) in a second.
The SI (or International System) unit of Hertz is named after Heinrich Rudolph Hertz (1857-1894), who showed that electromagnetic waves are caused by the oscillation of electrical charge and deduced that other forms of radiation would have shorter or longer wavelengths. Hertz can measure electrical waves, sound waves, electromagnetic waves (such as light or radio waves) or other waveforms.

8. Eagle Boys, Home Ice Cream Company, Subway, James Cleaning Services and McDonalds all have something in common. What is it?

Answer: franchising

All these companies have branches or stores that are franchised, meaning that the individual who operates and owns the location pays the mother company a fee for various company provisions (depending on the company, this can include branding, purchasing of materials and equipment, advertising, etc), and in return agrees to abide by certain operational principles (eg. range of goods, prices, store procedures, the extent of which also vary between companies).

Some of these companies also have company-owned locations, but some are purely franchise businesses. Fast food was obviously not the answer, and the other two answers I made up.
9. Using dots for short tones and dashes for long in morse code, what is the following word? .._. .. _

Answer: fit

.._. F
.. I
_ T

I chose this word because the letters I and T are very easy in the morse alphabet. All letters and the ten digits (as well as some punctuation marks) are represented in morse code by a series of long and short sounds. The letters are represented by one, two, three or four sounds, and the digits are all represented by five sounds.
10. What is the name for the bone in the leg that extends from the hip to the knee?

Answer: femur

The femur is the longest bone in the human body. The fibula is in the the lower leg, and the fibia doesn't exist, but the tibia does- it is also in the lower leg. Phalanges is the correct spelling for some of the small bones in your hands and feet.
