Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is (a) felucca?

Answer: a type of sailing vessel

A felucca is a narrow coasting vessel that has oars and/or sails, that's mostly found in the Mediterranean. I actually thought (at first) that the double cc was pronounced "Fe-LU-Cha" but its either "Fe-LU (LU as in loop)-ka" or "Fe-Lu (Lu as in lumber)-Ka". Strange, isn't it?
2. When does Black History month take place in the US?

Answer: February

We owe this great month to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. He was born to parents who were former slaves. He worked hard though, taking grueling jobs so he could go to Harvard to get an MBA. He was saddened and disturbed by the fact that there were hardly any blacks in the history books, and in the few cases that were, they were shown in a very inferior light. So he established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and one year later he founded the broadly respected "Journal of Negro History".

In 1926, Woodson launched Negro History Week "to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history", and Black History month has been held ever since.
3. Forenoon is the time between sunset and sunrise.

Answer: False

Nope, forenoon is the time between sunrise to noon (or midday) and is commonly known as morning, or as I like to call it, the Lazy Hours (well actually, all the time is lazy time for me, so I suppose it should be called the LaziEST hour).
4. In Canada, there are three main divisions in government. They are municipal, provincial, and _____.

Answer: Federal

Fiddler is not the correct answer, though I suppose some MPs can play the fiddle, a fedora is a soft felt hat with a slightly curved brim, and a felon is a person who is guilty of a serious crime.
5. What is the name of the device on vehicles to lessen injury to animals or pedestrians from debris flying from the wheels? (US definition)

Answer: fender

That was kind of a giveaway as the other options made no sense whatsoever if they were placed on a car. A 'fender bender' is what you call a minor automobile accident.
6. What is the name of Gomez's brother in 'The Addams Family' films?

Answer: Fester

Uncle Fester is played by Christopher Lloyd in both the movie "The Addams Family" and its sequel "The Addams Family Values". He used to creep me out when I was a kid, I think the makeup people did too good of a job on him than should be allowed on a children's show.

"In the original television series, Fester was Morticia's uncle, and therefore technically not an Addams, although at times he claims the family name as his own. In all other animated and filmed content, Fester became Gomez's older brother, and therefore the uncle of Wednesday and Pugsley." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Addams_Family)
7. What does "Flora and Fauna" mean?

Answer: All the plants and animals of an area or time

Flora and fauna are terms describing all the animals and plants of an area or epoch, and is commonly used in poetry (flora and fauna really do sound more poetic than "all the animals and plants of an area or time", don't you think?)
8. What is another name for an authorized leave of absence?

Answer: Furlough

It's pronounced "Fur-Low". POW is a 'Prisoner of War' while AWOL is 'Absent WithOut Leave'(or 'Absent Without Official Leave'). A furlong is a unit of length.
9. "Fo'c'sle" (pronounced 'folk-sul')is a shortened term used commonly for what?

Answer: forecastle

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a "fo'c'sle" is a variant of forecastle, which is the forward part of a ship's upper deck, and/or the crew's quarters in the ship's bow (usually).
10. What is a "flibbertigibbet"?

Answer: an un-serious person who loves gossip

Believe it or not, a flibbertigibbet is an actual word! :) According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, a flibbertigibbet is: "n. a frivolous person too fond of gossip. I couldn't believe it at first either, and I bet a large percent of quiz takers chose "Nothing, I made it up" (Don't worry, I would have done the same) Also, the word is found in the song "How do you solve a problem like Maria" in (the movie) 'The Sound of Music'.
