Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Music) In 1996, the UK dance scene heated up with the release of the The Prodigy's "Firestarter" (a single released from "The Fat of the Land" album) and showcased the vocals of Keith Flint for the very first time. Although the single scored the band their first UK number one, its video courted plenty of controversy, and was even branded too frightening to be watched by children. Where exactly did The Prodigy film the video for "Firestarter"?

Answer: In the tunnel of one of London's 'ghost' tube stations

"Firestarter" was The Prodigy's first UK single to hit the coveted number one spot, and succeeded in staying at the top of the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. The video for the single was shot in the tunnel of London's defunct Aldwych station, which closed its doors for the last time in 1994.

Much like Marmite, the single had its equal share of fans and critics, and while the former praised its punky vocals, the latter blasted it for inciting arson. Even so, it was the single's video that provoked the most extreme reaction from the public, and many music channels refused to play it until after the 9.00pm watershed.

Much of the action focused on the rather menacing-looking figure of Keith Flint, which, when coupled with the sinister music that accompanied the lyrics, in addition to the eeriness of the deserted tube tunnel, produced a result similar to a scene from a horror film. To top it all off, the video was filmed in black and white, which further heightened its dramatic effect.
2. (Animals) With over 280 different species worldwide, the fire ant has proven itself to be quite a pest as it can not only sting but also bite.

Answer: True

The fire ant can be found in the tropical climes of the world and can be incredibly aggressive. In fact, around twenty five Americans die each year as a direct result of being bitten or stung by these deadly little critters. Although one fire ant is unlikely to kill a person, an entire colony is certainly capable of doing so.

Moreover while most ants bite, the fire ant has the ability to inject its venomous sting from its rear end as well as possessing jaws that enable it to bite.
3. (History) In 1666, just as the people of London believed they had weathered the storm of the Great Plague, another disaster struck, in the form of the Great Fire of London. What 'sweet' street was determined as its place of origin?

Answer: Pudding Lane

Much of the surviving information regarding the 1666 Great Fire of London came from the diary of Samuel Pepys, who documented the event. Indeed Pepys' account made the fire's destruction all too clear, as he described it as "one entire arch" of "above a mile long".

He also commented that "churches, houses" were "all on fire", and also told of the account of his maid, Jane, who informed him that people were "staying in their houses" until "the very fire touched them", eventually forcing them outside, and into homelessness.

Indeed it appeared that after beginning in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane, the fire spread quickly, destroying everything in its wake. However when it was finally extinguished, the death toll was relatively low, [considering the scale of the fire], with five people dead.
4. (Entertainment) Over the years, Marvel Comics has catapulted many fictional superheroes to fame. One such fan favourite is the Human Torch, who has the ability to engulf his entire body in flames. Along with Thing, Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, he is a member of which team of superheroes?

Answer: Fantastic Four

The Human Torch is one of the founding members of the Fantastic Four. In his human form he is known by the name, Jonathan Storm, and is the youngest brother of fellow Fantastic Four member, Susan Storm, whose alter ego is the Invisible Woman. He is the group's youngest member, and was the brainchild of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, who first unveiled the character in the very first episode of "The Fantastic Four" comic, dated November 1961.
5. (Movies) Which 1991 film, which had an all-star cast that included Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Donald Sutherland and Robert De Niro, focused on a group of Chicago fire-fighters forced to deal with the aftermath of the actions of a serial arsonist?

Answer: Backdraft

The 1991 film, "Backdraft", revolved around the fire-fighters of Engine 17, as they struggled to deal with the carnage left behind by a serial arsonist. With its star-studded line-up, the film was well-received by critics who particularly praised its Visual Effects, for which it received an Academy Award nomination.

The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Effects and Editing, as well as for Best Sound.
6. (Television) Throughout the late 1980s, Welsh-speaking children all over Wales were riveted by the adventures of "Sam Tân". Such was Sam's popularity that the series was eventually redubbed in English, thus introducing English speaking children to the delights of this endearing character. But what was Sam's profession, which made him an important figure in the fictional world of Pontypandy?

Answer: Fireman

"Sam Tân", aka "Fireman Sam", was an animated television series aimed at children. It was originally created for S4C, Wales' Welsh terrestrial channel, but was then redubbed in English for the BBC. Set in the fictional town of Pontypandy, (an amalgamation of the two real life South Walian towns, Pontypridd and Tonypandy), Sam spent most episodes saving the day, and proved to be an excellent tool for raising awareness of fire safety.
7. (World) Which UK tycoon, who, despite coming from humble beginnings, went on to make Amstrad a highly profitable business venture, was once the chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, and will forever be associated with the UK version of "The Apprentice", in which he is known for uttering the immortal line, "You're Fired"?

Answer: Lord Alan Sugar

Alan Michael Sugar was born on 24th March, 1947, in Hackney, East London. In spite of his humble beginnings, he proved to be a shrewd businessman from an early age, and was selling electrical goods out of a van by the time he was 18. In 1968 he founded the company Amstrad, which brought him an enormous amount of success, up until 2007, when he sold the company for a cool 125 million pounds.

He also dabbled in other ventures, and was chairman of Premiership football club, Tottenham Hotspur, from 1991 to 2001.

However for most outside the world of football and business, Sugar is best known for his role on the UK version of "The Apprentice". As an often crabby and belligerent boss, Lord Sugar proved to be popular with viewers, particularly for his ominous catchphrase, "You're Fired", which was always punctuated by a pointing of the finger.
8. (Humanities) The word "fire" lends itself very well to idiomatic expression, and is particularly apt at expressing one's emotions. With this in mind, how does one feel if they have "fire in the belly"?

Answer: Passionate and determined

The phrase, "fire in the belly" is thought to have originated from the action of stoking a fire or a stove. It first appeared in print in 1882, in an essay by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which he compared two notable historians, Thomas Carlyle and Thomas Babington Macaulay. Generally speaking, the idiom is used to express one's drive and determination to succeed in something, and is frequently used to describe politicians, as well as the elite of the sporting world.
9. (Literature) Which dystopian novel, written by Ray Bradbury, centres around the burning of books?

Answer: Fahrenheit 451

The plot of the 1953 dystopian novel, "Fahrenheit 451", revolves around Guy Montag, a fire-fighter responsible not for putting out fires, but for starting them. For Bradbury's dystopian novel presents readers with a frightening vision of the future, a time when books are the enemy and are illegal to own. Regularly appearing on best book lists, Bradbury's novel is considered a must read classic.
10. (Hobbies) What temperature-controlling device, which dates back to around 6000 BC, might one use for firing pottery?

Answer: Kiln

The humble kiln has long been used to harden ceramics, and is a process that was invented thousands of years ago. Moreover this process, which hardens clay, has been proven to last for thousands of years too, as proven by various archaeological discoveries, from ancient China, to modern-day Iraq. Commonly referred to as a type of oven, the kiln is an insulated chamber, which regulates temperature, and is a must have piece for any potter.
