Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. PHYSICS: Light travels faster through certain objects than others, e.g. light travels faster in the air than water, giving the illusion that light is bending. What is the name of this phenomenon?

Answer: Refraction

The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 m/s; its speed in air is not much slower. However, through water, it is about 200,000,000 m/s.
2. CHEMISTRY: Titanium is obtained from its ore, rutile, in two stages. The first stage involves turning the titanium dioxide found in rutile into its what?

Answer: Chloride

Titanium is extremely difficult to extract from its ore, and involves two stages: treating the oxide with chlorine, to form titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4). The second stage is reducing this titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, in an atmosphere of argon, to get the pure titanium.
3. FRENCH: Which of these titles is most suitable for the article: Un garçon a été blessé, quand le conducteur d'une voiture n'a pas pu l'éviter. Le garçon a une jambe cassée et est à l'hôpital du Nord à Paris.

Answer: Un accident de voiture

The text, translated, is as follows:

"A boy was injured, when the driver of a car couldn't avoid him. The boy has a broken leg and is in the 'North Hospital' in Paris."

The article is therefore about "a car accident", and not "a lost child", "a bad musician", or "Parisian nights".
4. GEOGRAPHY: Shield-volcanoes are found on which type of plate boundary?

Answer: Constructive

Mauna Loa is perhaps the most famous shield volcano, situated in Hawaii. A shield volcano forms because the runny lava travels a long way before it cools and solidifies, hence its shallow sides and wide base. Shield-volcanoes are generally the safest volcanoes, because of the tendency for the eruptions to be non-explosive.
5. RELIGION: Which of the following gods is not part of the Hindu Trimurti?

Answer: Ganesh

Ganesh is the god with the body of a human and the head of an elephant.
The Trimurti consists of Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer).

GCSE Religious Studies is much more complicated than this, however, and are mostly based on religious, and your own, opinions on controversial or disputable matters.
6. MATHEMATICS: What is the solution to the following problem? (64^1/2)*(4^-1) This reads: Sixty-four to the power of a half, multiplied by four to the power of minus one.

Answer: 2

Anything raised to the power of a half is simply square rooted, so 64 to the power of 1/2 is 8. x to the power of -1 is 1/x. So it would be 8 x 1/4, which is 2.
7. ICT: What does GUI stand for?

Answer: Graphical User Interface

GUI stands for Graphical User Interface, which allows people to interact with a computer using images and icons, instead of it being just text based like the computers of old were.
8. HISTORY (Modern World): The WSPU were nicknamed the Suffragists.

Answer: False

The WSPU, or the Women's Social and Political Union, led by Christabel Pankhurst, were nicknamed the Suffragettes. The Suffragettes often protested violently, the Suffragists protested by peaceful means only. The WSPU were a controversial group of people, and it is disputable whether they did anything constructive to gain the vote.
9. BIOLOGY: Which of these components of a cell belongs to only a plant cell, and not both a typical plant and animal cell?

Answer: Cell Wall

The cell wall, only found in plant cells, gives the cell structural support. Cell membranes are found in both plants and animals, and act as a filter to unwanted chemicals: it is said to be selectively permeable - allowing only certain chemicals in that the cell wants. Nuclei control the cell, and contain most of the cell's genetic materials.
10. PE: Which one of these methods of treating injury should you use if someone sprains their ankle?

Answer: R.I.C.E.

R.I.C.E. stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. It is used for soft-tissue injuries.

D.R.A.B.C. is for unconscious patients, and stands for Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing, Circulation.

F.I.T.T. is the principles of training, and stands for Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time.

P.E.P. stands for Personal Exercise Programme.
