Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the right to go to Fashion Week on the reality show "Project Runway" in 2014?

Answer: Kini, Amanda, Sean and Char

Yep, there are four people going to Fashion Week this time! Very exciting. I generally watch it every week!
2. What is the name of the capital of the Cayo District of Belize?

Answer: San Ignacio

I lived almost two years in San Ignacio, aka Cayo. Lovely, lovely area if you like warm and humid! San Ignacio generally has a terrific farmers' market on the banks of the Macal River, and is just a couple miles from Xunantunich, a spectacular Mayan ruin. Great vacation spot.
3. Of the four plants given, which would thrive best without direct sunlight?

Answer: English Ivy

Plants that flower generally need more sun than those grown for their foliage only. The three incorrect answers all have beautiful flowers. The commonly marketed English Ivy doesn't. Mine is thriving in a north-facing window.
4. According to the Illinois State Museum, when did glass paperweights first come into being?

Answer: 1840s

The Illinois State Museum features the Morton D. Barker collection of some 200 glass paperweights. Very beautiful. The Austinnene Living Room features a collection of 4, also very beautiful, which generally require frequent dusting.
5. What are hard water deposits made of?

Answer: calcium and magnesium

I have an open floor plan, so my kitchen is in the living room! There are generally no water deposits on my sofa...
6. In what year were special education classes for children with disabilities made mandatory in the United States?

Answer: 1975

The "Education for All Handicapped Children Act" was signed into law by President Gerald Ford, to take effect in 1978. Prior to that, there were classes devoted to students with special needs, but not in all public schools. They were generally privately operated, and financially out of reach for many families with special needs kids. I worked with special needs individuals for 40 years and photos of many of them adorn my walls.
7. Are there really 1,000 islands in the Thousand Islands?

Answer: Yes, and then some

Most sources say there are 1864 islands within the region known as the Thousand Islands, which are located in a section of the Saint Lawrence River between New York State and Ontario. If you've never been, put it on your bucket list. The area is absolutely breathtaking and generally very pleasant in the summertime. My aunt, a professional artist, painted a lovely watercolor of Pine Bay in the Thousand Islands, to which my eyes are drawn several times every day.
8. Who wrote "Cell", "Duma Key" and "Lisey's Story"?

Answer: Stephen King

All three stories have been made into audio recordings. Unabridged recordings of King's full-length novels generally take 8 hours or more to complete, and they are riveting!
9. What substance is most commonly used to back the reflective surface of mirrors?

Answer: Aluminum

In the past, silver, chrome and gold were used as metals provided the best reflective surfaces, but in recent years aluminum generally has replaced them, because it is superior both in enhancing reflectivity and in durability. There is a trio of very small mirrors on one wall of my living room.
10. The Mississippi River runs between Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Is it big enough in the Twin Cities to support commercial freight transport?

Answer: Yes

Minneapolis and Saint Paul operate separate ports, with Minneapolis' located about 17 miles upriver from the Port of Saint Paul. In 2012, the two ports shipped approximately 6,200,000 short tons of cargo, all of it within the US (no foreign trade). Of that, nearly 90% of the tonnage was shipped through Saint Paul. Generally, grain is the primary commodity shipped from the port. I live in Saint Paul, in an area which is both east and west of the Mississippi.

The map on the wall shows that I'm in an area that's like a big oxbow.
