Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know that some superstitious people believe Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. But in many European countries (like Spain) and in Latin America, the unlucky day is a different day of the week. What is considered the unlucky day?

Answer: Tuesday

There is a proverb in Spanish that says: "On Tuesdays, do not get married, do not sail and do not go away from your family" (En martes, nI te cases, nI te embarques, nI de tu familia te apartes).

The superstition goes back to the Middle Ages, when Constantinople fell twice on a Tuesday, during the 4th Crusade, and again under the siege of the Ottoman Turks. In Greece, the unlucky day is also Tuesday.
2. In the US, a billion is one thousand millions. It is not the same in Latin America and in Continental Europe. How many millions do you need to make a billion in those countries?

Answer: A million millions

The system by which a thousand millions is a billion is called the short scale. In Europe and Latin America, the long scale is used: a billion is a million millions, a trillion is a million billions and so forth.
3. Which of these is a prime number?

Answer: 17

Prime numbers cannot be divided to give an exact result except when divided by one or by the number itself. Other examples of prime numbers are: 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 19, 23, 29, 31, etc.
4. There is a very popular French dish I ate on Christmas Day when I was in Belgium. This dish has chicken as the main ingredient. The chicken is marinated in red wine for several hours or overnight. The wine is removed and saved, and the chicken is fried in lard or bacon fat. Mushrooms, new potatoes, carrots, and onions are added. Then, the wine is poured back with all the ingredients and everything is cooked slowly until ready. What is this gastronomic jewel's name?

Answer: Coq Au Vin

The Coq Au Vin can be prepared in different ways. I have eaten it in restaurants and in private homes. I personally do not use lard but cook it in the oven with all the seasoning necessary and when ready, I take it out and add all the vegetables plus green olives and some tomato sauce. I then cook everything together in a pot, adding the wine used for marinating the chicken. I serve it with steamed rice.

The French like it over fries. In either case, bon appetit!
5. In the US, what was the price range of the Cadillac in 1950?

Answer: $2,700 to $3,000

Cadillacs became luxury cars in the 1930s and gained the leadership of the luxury industries in the 1950s, replacing the Packard. In 1950, prices started at $2,761 for the Series 61 coupe, and after adding some special features, they would sell for $3000. Exceptionally, at the time some sedan models would sell for up to $5,000 fully loaded.
6. In genealogy, what is your relation to your grandmother's first cousin?

Answer: First cousin twice removed

"Once removed" means one generation difference, "twice removed" means two generations difference, and so forth. In other words, your grandmother's first cousin is two generations away from you, although he is still a first cousin. Second cousins are the children of your parents' first cousins; third cousins are the grandchildren of your grandparents' first cousins.

In other words, when using the terms first, second, third cousins, etc., it is always referred to a cousin of the same generation as yours. Uncles and aunts are your parents' brothers and sisters; great-uncles and aunts are the brothers and sisters of your grandparents; great-grand-uncles and aunts are the siblings of your great-grandparents and so forth.
7. This stone was discovered in the Dominican Republic. It is opaque and has different tones of blue. The color might make you think of the water in the Caribbean. What is the name of this stone? (Hint: The man who discovered it had a daughter named Larissa and the color makes you think of the sea.)

Answer: Larimar

Larimar was discovered in 1916, but it was only in the late 1970s that it was commercially mined. Pedro Mendez, the discoverer, named the stone using the first letters of his daughter's name, adding the word for sea in Spanish, "mar".
8. The Bogie Man is a fictional monster or bad man that some Western children are afraid of. What is the name of a similar character in Spanish cultures?

Answer: El Coco

"El Coco" was mentioned for the first time in Galician (a dialect from the north of Spain) and in Portuguese in the 17th century, and later in the 18th century in Spanish literature. According to the legend, El Coco kidnaps bad children and even eats them.
9. The twelve signs of the zodiac are classified into four groups. Which of these groups is characterized by intuition, sensitivity and intense feelings? The people born under these signs supposedly love the supernatural, mysteries and to be close to others, being good at getting to know other people well in a short time.

Answer: Water Signs: Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer

According to astrologers, Cancer uses instinct, Pisces is guided by intuition, and Scorpio is the master of perception. People born under these signs often help others find fulfillment. They are reputedly willing to give up things they care for to please others, but they tend to be moody.
10. One of the most unusual phobias is the fear of bathing or washing. The name of this phobia comes from the Latin word meaning "to wash". What is the name of this phobia?

Answer: Ablutophobia

Asthenophobia is the fear of fainting, algophobia is the fear of pain and ataxiophobia is the fear of muscular weakness. Ablutophobia, or the fear of bathing, is more common in children and women.
