Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A typical gasoline-powered automobile engine uses a four-stroke combustion cycle. The four strokes in the combustion cycle are called:

Answer: Intake, compression, power, exhaust

The four strokes are: INTAKE, COMPRESSION, POWER, and EXHAUST. During the INTAKE stroke, the fuel-air mixture is drawn through the intake valves and into the cylinder by the downward-moving piston. After the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder and begins moving upward, the COMPRESSION stroke begins.

At the top of this stroke, the spark plug or glow plug fires, causing the compressed fuel-air mixture to explode. This drives the piston back down in the POWER stroke. Finally, during the EXHAUST stroke, the piston begins moving upward again, pushing the burned fuel through the exhaust valves and out of the cylinder.
