Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A national symbol of India, what landmark was constructed as a tomb for the wife of a Mughal Emperor?

Answer: Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal, constructed during the reign of Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century, was created from white marble in the city of Agra, a short distance outside of Delhi, and was made as a tomb for one of the Emperor's wives, Mumtaz Mahal. This monument of undying love has since become one of the most famous landmarks in India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The building is also surrounded by a complex series of gardens known as charbagh and several outlying structures that comprise the Taj Mahal Complex. Nevertheless, the main tomb itself is the reason for the site, and it attracts millions of tourists on an annual basis.
2. At one time, Richard Burton purchased the world's most expensive diamond for Elizabeth Taylor. Which diamond was it?

Answer: Krupp Diamond

Nothing says love quite like a sparkly diamond, but Richard Burton, who was Elizabeth Taylor's fifth husband, went all out to find the biggest of the bunch. It ended up being the 33 carat Krupp Diamond which, after her death in 2011, was sold for nearly nine million dollars. Taylor's propensity for diamonds was well-known.

She and Burton also bought the South African Taylor-Burton Diamond which, at 68 carats, was one of the largest in their collection. She wore it to the Oscars in 1970.
3. Which of the Seven Wonders of the World was allegedly built for Amytis of Media by her husband, Nebuchadnezzar II?

Answer: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Built in what is now present-day Iraq, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built to make Queen Amytis of Media feel more at home in the desert. This multi-tiered, lush oasis was the only one of the Seven Wonders to be contested as real. Allegedly built next to the Tower of Babel, the gardens were considered to be a marvel of engineering at the time, using advanced screw systems to push water to the top tiers of the structure and cascade back to the bottom. That said, there's no archaeological evidence of the site though it was thought to be the second of the wonders to be constructed (after the Great Pyramids).
4. In which Barenaked Ladies song does the band claim that they would "buy your love"?

Answer: If I Had $1,000,000

From their debut album, "Gordon", from back in 1992, "If I Had $1,000,000" ended up becoming a concert staple for the band. In fact, when the song mentions Kraft Dinner, fans in the audience have been known to throw boxes of the macaroni treat at the stage.

The song chronicles what the band would do if they had the titular amount-- everything from buying their lover a fur coat and a green dress (but not a real fur coat or green dress; that's cruel) to an exotic pet (like a llama or an emu) to some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkel). Ultimately, it boils down to buying the affection of their beloved.
5. Whose orchestral piece, the "Siegfried Idyll", was written for his wife's birthday in 1870?

Answer: Richard Wagner

Wagner wrote this piece shortly after his wife, Cosima, had their son, Siegfried Wagner, and it was first performed for her on Christmas Day, a year and a half after the birth, with a Swiss orchestra formed only a couple years earlier. The "Siegfried Idyll" was never originally meant to be played in public, but Wagner, who spent many years in exile, was forced to sell the piece, but not before he incorporated a large amount of it into his dramatic opera piece "Siegfried", which was the third part of his 'Ring Cycle' ("Der Ring des Nibelungen"). Cosima Wagner was said to have loved the piece.

This is quite high praise; her father was Franz Liszt.
6. In the TV show "Friends", Ross gave which other character an antique pin, not unlike the one her grandmother once owned, sparking their official relationship?

Answer: Rachel

At the end of the first season of the show, in the episode "The One Where Rachel Finds Out", the truth slips (from Chandler) that Ross has a thing for Rachel after she receives a particularly sentimental gift. She decides to meet him at the airport after he returns from a business trip, but the season ends on a cliffhanger.

It turns out that he's found a new girlfriend during his trip-- Julie-- and it takes about seven episodes to end that relationship and spark Ross and Rachel's first big kiss.

Their relationship continues on and off (on a break?) for the remaining nine seasons.
7. For Beyonce and Blue Ivy, Jay-Z ended up purchasing a private island in which part of the world?

Answer: The Caribbean

Being a superstar celebrity couple lends itself to nice things, and on Beyonce Knowles' twenty-ninth birthday, the nice thing was an island in the Bahamas courtesy of her husband, Jay-Z. Of course, this isn't even the 'cherry on top' for the two. In the past, Beyonce has bought Jay-Z a $40,000,000 private jet to share with her.

The two also ended up purchasing a house in The Hamptons-- the price tag was $26,000,000.
8. In what 1998 Adam Sandler movie did Robbie purchase a plane ticket to perform "I Wanna Grow Old With You" out of love (with a bit of help from Billy Idol)?

Answer: The Wedding Singer

Robbie and Julia (played by Drew Barrymore) fall in love over the course of the movie only for Julia to end up heading to the airport with the other guy, Glenn. In one final romantic gesture, Robbie rushes to the airport and buys a first-class ticket on Julia's flight to surprise her with an original song.

The entire airplane, save for her expected fiancee, ends up helping him along with this plan, including 1980s rocker Billy Idol. In the end, the two of them end up married with Steve Buscemi being the singer at their wedding.
9. Having one of the shortest reigns in British history, which former King abdicated the throne to be with the woman he loved?

Answer: Edward VIII

King Edward VIII stayed on the throne for less than a year before abdicating and marrying Wallis Simpson, a woman considered by many of Edward's peers to be unfit as Queen. Instead of dealing with the politics behind everything, he decided to simply step down.

The throne was passed onward to King George VI, his brother, who was next in succession. Edward and Wallis married the year after and were married until the 1970s when Edward passed away in Paris.
10. In the famous scene from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp", Tramp ends up nudging which of these towards Lady over dinner?

Answer: Meatball

As Lady and the Tramp start to fall in love, their adventure leads them to the alleyway behind an Italian restaurant where, over dinner, Tramp nudges her a meatball and they kiss each other slurping up a strand of spaghetti. The story ends with love as well; Lady and the Tramp end up living together with Tramp being adopted and taken in off the street.

They have four puppies, one of which becomes the star of the straight-to-video sequel, "Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure". The song that plays during the Italian dinner scene, "Bella Notte", has since been considered somewhat of a classic love song.
