Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hasta la vista, baby: Which movie tough guy was noted for the catchphrase "I'll be back"?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger

In fact both "Hasta la vista, baby" (from the Spanish "see you later") and "I'll be back" were used by Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in the "Terminator" movies. The first of these was "Terminator" in 1984 and was used by the character when refused entry to a police station. In the other Schwarzenegger movies, the phrase was sometimes subtly reworked.
2. Which World War Two military leader suffered a defeat in battle and then vowed "I shall return"?

Answer: Douglas MacArthur

MacArthur was the USA's most decorated soldier of The Great War. In the 1930s he helped to reshape the Army of the Philippines and when war broke out between the USA and Japan in 1941 he was appointed commander of United States Armed Forces in the Far East.

His defence of the Philippines against Japanese invasion was criticised in many quarters and 70,000 US soldiers and their Filipino allies were forced to surrender to the Japanese at Bataan. On leaving the Philippines and landing in Australia he made the now legendary promise: ""I came out of Bataan and I shall return".

This was abbreviated in newspaper reports to: "I came through and I shall return". He fulfilled that promise in 1944 when allied troops landed again in the Philippines.
3. Once upon a time he danced and sang his way into our affections while dazzling the girls on a high school campus. Then, suddenly, he couldn't even even get a job as a school janitor. Which Hollywood heartthrob put away his white suit and went over to the dark side and made a critically acclaimed comeback in a pure piece of pulp fiction?

Answer: John Travolta

"Saturday Night Fever" (1977) and "Grease" (1978) made John Travolta one of Hollywood's brightest stars, then he embarked on a string of flops (remember "Urban Cowboy", anyone?) He even showed what some might call a lack of judgment, turning down "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Splash", among others.
Then in 1994, Quentin Tarantino threw him a lifeline and he earned an Oscar nomination for "Pulp Fiction". Other quality roles followed, including "Get Shorty" (1995), "Face/Off" (1997), "A Civil Action" (1998), and "The General's Daughter" (1999).
4. He quit because he was "bored" and went away to do something else. When that flopped, he returned to his first love. Which sporting hero found going through hoops easier than life as a ball slugger?

Answer: Michael Jordan

After winning a hat-trick of NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, Jordan quit, saying he was bored with winning. He tried his hand at baseball, but after three years of standing still with the Chicago White Sox. he returned to basketball with the Bulls at the age of 32 and chalked up another three title wins.
5. Life in the fast lane brought him top awards, but then he only just walked away from a near-fatal crash. After flying high for a few years, which sporting superstar returned to that high octane world of motor sport and became a champion all over again?

Answer: Niki Lauda

The Austrian Niki Lauda was hailed as one of Formula One's best drivers ever. He took the drivers' championship in 1975, then the following year suffered severe burns in a horrific crash. In 1979 he retired to start his own commercial airline but the lure of the F1 engines proved too much and he made a comeback at the age of 33 and won the title again in 1984. He retired again the following year.
Jim Clark and Stirling Moss were both British F1 drivers. Peter Perfect, of course, drove a racing car in "Wacky Races".
6. Sometimes the best way to watch a TV soap is to take out your brain and leave it in a jar on the mantelpiece for the duration. Which soap character turned tangled plot lines into a dream simply by stepping out of the shower?

Answer: Bobby Ewing

There was a time when "Dallas" (1978 to 1991) was the biggest and brashest soap on US TV, and was also watched around the globe. This was the story of the oil-rich Ewing family and Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) was the most handsome of the Ewing clan. Duffy got tired of the show and quit at the end of the 1985 season and his character was killed off in a car crash. Ratings tumbled and he was persuaded to return in the following season. To explain what had happened during the time he was "dead" he emerged from a shower and the viewers were meant to believe that the intervening period and happenings had all been a dream of his wife, Pam.
7. 'Allo Princess: Everyone thought he had met a watery end but he made a comeback after an absence of 14 years. Which hard-man British TV soap character was also noted for giving his wife divorce papers as a Christmas present?

Answer: Dennis Watts

Leslie Grantham played "Dirty Den" Watts in the British soap EastEnders [sic] from its inception until 1989 when he apparently drowned in the local canal. He reappeared in 2003 with the immortal first words "'Allo Princess" to his daughter, Sharon. The character was murdered in 2005.
8. "I'll be back again no matter where I go For it's only love that frees the fire for burning Then I'll take you in my arms and tell you all I know As I sing the early song of my returning..." Which folksinger penned these lines?

Answer: Phil Ochs

If only it were true, but sadly the brilliant but troubled Phil Ochs took his own life in April 1976. Ochs was one of a raft of protest singers who emerged into the New York City folk scene in the early 1960s. A supporter of Civil Rights and an opponent of the Vietnam War, Ochs produced songs such as "Draft Dodgers Rag", "Here's To The State of Mississippi", "The Ballad Of Medgar Evers" and "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore".

His commitment to these causes made him a hero for many but a problem figure for others - the CIA kept a thick file on him. Unlike some of his peers, Ochs did not turn his back on those early protest days, and that probably denied him the commercial success of certain of his contemporaries. The lyrics are taken from 'Song Of My Returning'.
9. Never surrender would seem to be a suitable motto for politicians in adversity. Which British politician was castigated for overseeing a disastrous military campaign and then roundly condemned for his handling of the economy as Chancellor before going on to be regarded as one of the best Prime Ministers of the 20th century?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill was the proposer of the invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula by British and allied troops in 1915. He had wanted to create a "third front" to divide the attentions of Germany and her allies. The campaign was a disaster with the Turkish defenders fighting more fiercely than had been predicted of them.

In all there were about 200,000 British, Australian and New Zealand casualties. Turkey lost about a similar number. In the 1920s, Churchill served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, to much criticism.

He returned Britain to the Gold Standard and took a hard line against the General Strike. Out of office by 1931, his reputation was redeemed by his early warnings against the rise of Hitler and he was to become an inspirational Prime Minister when war was declared. In 2004, a poll of historians and political scientists rated Churchill the second best British Prime Minister of the 20th Century. Clement Attlee took the top spot.
10. There are few things in life more satisfying than seeing the mighty fall. For politicians it happens regularly and they often need to re-invent themselves to make a comeback. Which politician quit the US Congress over accusations about funding irregularities, then re-emerged to strut his stuff on a TV show's dance floor?

Answer: Tom DeLay

Formerly the Republican Party's majority leader in Congress, DeLay resigned in 2006 when he was indicted on charges of violating campaign funds, according to reports in 'The New York Times'. Three years later (and with the accusations still to come before a court) he danced to the song "Wild Thing" on the TV Show "Dancing With The Stars". Bob Dole, the former Presidential candidate, became a spokesman for Viagra. Al Gore, who lost a Presidential election, made a strong comeback as a campaigner for the environment. John Hoynes was the fictional vice-president in the TV drama 'The West Wing".
