Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hi CindyK41 here! My traditional birthstone is a shimmering stone! It was called "Cupid Paederos" by Romans; it means a child beautiful as love. It is the national gemstone of Australia. What is the name of the stone for the tenth month?

Answer: opal

The traditional birthstones come from the twelve stones in Aaron's breastplate. There is a lot of speculation on which country started the tradition of wearing a birthstone, Poland or Germany? In 1912, a modern list of birthstones was adapted in the United States by the National Association of Jewellers. My modern stone would be pink tourmaline for October.
2. I'm kimbwitchn from the USA. My birthstone is a variety of quartz. It was believed to protect the wearer from drunkenness and is used to promote stress relief and to help with insomnia. What's my birthstone?

Answer: amethyst

February's birthstone is Amethyst. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that drinking from a cup carved from amethyst would prevent the wearer from becoming intoxicated. The rarest and most valuable amethyst is the very deep purple Deep Russian (Siberian) stone, which is mined out now and very hard to come by.
3. Grymmycat from the USA here. My birthstone is a blue variety of beryl the name of which comes from the Latin meaning "water of the sea." Which stone is it?

Answer: aquamarine

The largest cut gemstone aquamarine is the Dom Pedro aquamarine in the Smithsonian Institution. Aquamarine is believed by some to bring happiness to a marriage, and to the woman who wears it, joy and wealth as well.
4. Hello, Ankhsunamun1 from Scotland here. My stone, is a beautiful bright blue colour, which is used by the Native American Indians in much of their jewellery. This is based on the U.K. version of this stone. Other countries have other stones, but this is the recognised one.

Answer: turquoise

This stone represents Sagittarius, 22nd November - December 22nd and is represented by The Archer. Although I like turquoise and have quite a few pieces of jewellery, I can also use lapis lazuli or blood red rubies, although this second choice is an old stone used in the early 20th Century. I will stick with turquoise!
5. Good Day! BrixOfficial here from The Philippines. My birthstone comes in several colors, but they share the same association with eternal love and invincibility. It was once believed that they could also ward off insanity. It is also known to every woman as "girl's best friend". It was also known before as "the hardest mineral". What is my birthstone?

Answer: diamond

April's birthstone, the diamond, in addition to being a symbol of everlasting love, was once thought to bring courage. In Sanskrit, the diamond is called "vajra," which also means lightning; in Hindu mythology, vajra was the weapon of Indra, the king of gods.
6. ElusiveDream, here! Among my collection of gems is my birthstone, a beautiful purple one. It's sometimes called the "Bishop's Stone" because it's worn by Catholic bishops. Which stone is it?

Answer: amethyst

My birthstone is amethyst. It's believed that if you sleep with an amethyst under your pillow, you'll experience pleasant dreams. Rubbing it on your forehead is believed to offer relief from headaches and insomnia.
7. CindyK41 needs help. Both of my daughters were born in March. I want to get them a ring with their birthstone. The jeweler said to get the one nicknamed the martyr's stone. What stone is this?

Answer: Blood Stone

Legend says that the red spots on this stone were created when drops of Christ's blood stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. Hence the name blood stone. The traditional stone for March is aquamarine.
8. Kimbwitchn from the USA here. My grandmother waited most of her life for my grandfather to buy her a ring with her birthstone in it. She finally got the ring at an advanced age and wore it until the day she died. Her birthstone is the green variety of beryl. What stone is it?

Answer: Emerald

Emerald is the birthstone for May. Emeralds are often highly included, with fissures and cracks visible to the eye. A really top-quality emerald is a deep rich green, very transparent, and no flaws visible to the naked eye. The jeweler's loupe is not used in grading emeralds. Most emeralds are treated with colorless oil (usually cedar oil) in order to fill in cracks that reach the surface of the stone, to improve stability. Colombia produces the largest percentage of the world's emeralds, with Zambia being the second largest producer.
9. CindyK41 is in trouble again! My father's birthday is in August and he wants a birthstone ring, too. I found out that the name of his stone comes from an Arabic word meaning "gem". What stone is it?

Answer: Peridot

Peridot comes in only one colour: green. However, there are different shades of green depending on the iron content of the crystal structure. Individual gems can range in colour from yellow to dark olive-green.
10. JClauri here from the USA! My birthstone is made when corundum mixes with a bit of chromium. It comes in many shades of red, but its most valuable shade is blood-red. This gem is sure to remind Dorothy that "there's no place like home!" What is my birthstone?

Answer: Ruby

The birthstone for July is ruby. Rubies are actually just the red counterparts of sapphires. They are also held in particularly high value in Asian countries such as China and India.
