Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would I do with the black (or white) discs on a Crokinole board?

Answer: Flick them

Crokinole is played by lining your coloured discs at the sideline of the board and flicking it to collect points, either in the center bullseye (worth twenty) or in the surrounding areas. To attain points you must knock one of your opponent's discs in some way, otherwise your disc does not count and is knocked off the board. Played on a tabletop, the game is a cross between curling and shuffleboard, but it's played by flicking your discs with your fingers; it relies entirely on your aim, strategy, and flicking power.
2. For what purpose would I be likely to use a whisk?

Answer: Baking

Whisks, also known as egg beaters, are used to mix and aerate baking materials (eggs, for instance) and are made using looped pieces of metal or plastic. Whisks are used to make baked goods (meringue, for example) or sauces such as gravy or roux. Although electric mixers/beaters are also available for larger tasks (eg. mixing dough), the traditional hand mixer is an important part of a baker's tool kit.
3. Why would I even use something with such sharp teeth like this?

Answer: To remove staples from paper

The item in question is a staple remover. To use this object, all you need to do is clamp the object down so that it grabs the used staple and pull. By gripping in with the two frightening teeth you would also happen to be loosening the two folded ends of the staple, straightening them out and preparing them for removal.

It may take a couple tries to get right; it's not a perfect device and may cause more harm to your work than anything. Do not use it to remove staples from yourself.
4. What would be the use of the instrument shown?

Answer: To curl eyelashes

Although this item looks more dangerous than it lets on, it's not used to remove anything from anything; it's an eyelash curler. To use it, you need to place your eyelash into the hole at the top, then gently squeeze it to curl the lash. This is done by placing rubber into the squeezed hole (don't worry, it comes with the pad installed); this will create the illusion of longer lashes without you needing to buy more expensive cosmetics. Of course, it's a nightmare for people who don't want anything near their eyes (*cough*me*cough*).
5. What would be the use of something like this?

Answer: To level out an object

This item, also known as a spirit level, is often used by builders to test how even or flat a surface is. To use it, you simply place it flat on top of an object; the bubble on the inside is the right size to fit between the markings on the glass/plastic tube. If you're off, the bubble will be outside the lines and adjustments can be made.

This tool is fairly standard for a builder, so much so that many modern tools (including tape measures) come with them built in. Another interesting tool is the laser leveler which shoots a laser out to mark a straight line on a wall.

This level can be calculated by the device itself to ensure a flat surface.
6. What would I be using this item to find?

Answer: Pitch

This tuning fork would be used to match pitches. Holding the narrow end, you hit the prongs against something solid, then hold the one end against something solid to hear that specific tone. This is one way to tune a musical instrument (like a guitar or a piano) if you can't judge the pitch on your own. Many people can't.
If this also proves difficult you could also buy an electronic tuner. If you play a string on your guitar, for instance, it can tell you what note you're actually playing in and how far off it is so that you can properly change it in the moment.
7. What would be pressed inside a kitchen implement such as this one?

Answer: Garlic

A garlic press may not be the number one utensil in your drawer, it does come in handy if you're a fan of the pungent bulb. To use this device, take a clove of garlic, spread the two handles, and place it inside. When you squeeze tightly, the clove will be pressed through the bottom holes.

This can be done with or without the peel on the clove, but to remove something like that, all you'd need to do is shake the cloves in a pair of metal bowls until they easily separate.
8. What would I use this sphygmomanometer for?

Answer: Testing blood pressure

A sphygmomanometer is better known as a blood pressure tester; you wrap it around your upper arm as naturally as possible and squeeze the pump to tighten the device. When used with a stethoscope you're able to determine your blood pressure. Although the strappy, manual devices are seen less and less with the advent of modern technology, they're not impossible to find. Most people use automatic readers (still wrapped around the arm) for the same purpose. Early versions of the tool contained mercury. You know, for health.
9. What would this cable be used to connect with?

Answer: iPod

This iPod USB cable can be used to plug your device into either a computer, an outlet extension, or other devices. One end is a USB end while the other plugs directly into the bottom of your iPod or iPhone (or, in some cases, iPad). The device works in several ways. Firstly, it can be used to upload songs or apps to your device, updating its content and backing it onto your hard drive. Secondly, it's also the primary method of charging the unit for further use. Depending on the model of player or phone you have, the cord may look a bit different. On occasion, it's updated for newer versions.
10. What would be the purpose of such a remote?

Answer: To play video games

The Wii Remote is the primary controller for the Nintendo Wii video game console. A wireless device, it has the ability to detect motion, allowing for more inventive, interactive gaming with plenty of opportunity for user response. This allows for several new functions from realistic sword-fighting to boxing to gun-shooting.

The Wii Remote also comes with several useful attachments, many of which are also made by Nintendo (though sometimes third-party companies). Newer versions of the console, the Wii U, for instance, are also playable with a tablet controller.
