Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've got my hands full with the mixing bowl and I can't reach over the counter. Please pass that over there so I can beat the eggs. What's the object?

Answer: Whisk

The whisk is a fairly basic cooking utensil in most kitchens. Made from a stiff plastic or metal, this item is used to mix, beat, and fluff whatever is being attended to; due to the unique design of the whisk, it allows the mixture in the bowl to breathe and lighten. If you use a whisk to beat cream, for example, you'll froth it into whipped cream. Whisks are also good for loosening thicker powders and particles into a mixture, powdered gravy, for example, will loosen up easier when beaten and whisked.
2. Hey, I'm under the table right now-- one of the legs is loose. Can you pass me the screwdriver? There's a screw up there you can match it with. What specific screwdriver should be used?

Answer: Phillips Screwdriver

The Phillips-head screwdriver is the one with the cross shape depicted. Created by Henry F. Phillips, it was first implemented in the 1930s and has since expanded to be a fairly commonplace drive shape.

The Robertson screwdriver is also known as the 'square-head'. It was designed in early twentieth century and came into prominence in Canada. Hex Keys or Allen Keys/Wrenches are used for hexagonal-holed screws; these are commonplace with furniture sets (usually Ikea). A spanner is used for screws with two holes; these are less common than most commercial screws but can be seen in larger machines.
3. Come on! Get down here! As soon as you pass this item on, I'm running for it! What item should you be handing to me during a relay?

Answer: Baton

During a running relay, the racers must complete their portion of the track handing off a baton as they reach the next participant down the line. If the baton is dropped, the racer(s) could be disqualified from competition. Because of this, many racers not only practice the hand-off for the baton, but methods of maintaining speed before and during the pass.

Batons are usually only used in running relays, particularly in track and field. Although relays exist in swimming and cycling, such hand-offs are impractical.
4. It's totally my turn to play the game! Why don't you pass the controller over and I'll pass it back when I'm out of lives. This Wii controller is also known by what name?

Answer: Wii Remote

The Wii Remote was introduced on the Nintendo Wii console in 2006 upon its holiday release. This slender instrument is used for motion control; you can point it at the screen in many games (and in the Wii menu screen) to move a cursor and select different things. Because of a sensor bar placed atop the screen, players can shake the remote, wave it, swing it, point it, or use it as a weapon to play games onscreen. Up to four can be paired up to a single console for use in multiplayer games. An additional port in the bottom allows the Wii Remote to connect to different peripherals including a 'Classic Controller' for Virtual Console games and the Wii Nunchuk.
5. Caddy, bring me whatever you suggest for this shot. I'll let you decide. Which of these is really the best option?

Answer: Sand wedge

The Sand wedge is usually made of iron. This club is designed to allow for a clean shot, even in a dune or sand trap, where the ball is least likely to move. Using a putter for this would be quite difficult as the sand wedge is designed to be heavy and wide; this way it allows for the best shot.

The putter is a smaller club designed for shorter, more intricate shots. The driver, likewise, is not ideal for this scenario as it's used for longer shots. Made of wood, the driver is designed for range. Do not use a croquet mallet for golf. People will stare.
6. I don't care how ridiculous this sounds, I need to you to pass me the yellow thing over there on the table. What kind of animal is this item supposed to be?

Answer: Chicken

Rubber chickens are gag items. Usually coloured yellow and made of synthetic rubber, these birds typically have no discernible use other than to prank or joke. Many people also opt to buy dog toys which resemble rubber chickens, just for the sake of it.

The rubber chicken is also prominent in many role-playing and video games; the ubiquity of the item usually counterbalances an ironic strength or magic bonus added to it. In 'Dungeons and Dragons', for example, a cursed rubber chicken can cause slight havoc.
7. I need something that may seem a little unorthodox. Don't worry, you're not the one who'll be feeling the sting of this one. Also, don't ask why I need it. What's the name of the device pictured?

Answer: Cat o' Nine Tails

The Cat o' Nine Tails is a whip with several tendrils and while it hasn't been used as legitimate punishment (by law) for ages, it was once used in Britain and Australia for many years both in prisons and in the navy. One rope is used in the whip and it is unraveled into three shorter tendrils which, in turn, are unraveled into three shorter tendrils to make nine.

Although many countries banned flogging (some in favour of caning) many countries in the Caribbean either persisted with the Cat o' Nine Tails until the late 1990s and early 2000s or refused to remove the option.
8. Keep quiet! The guards will hear us! Just keep your head down and pass me those gold coins from South Africa. What should you be passing me?

Answer: Krugerrands

The Kruggerand is named as such because the image of South Africa's fifth President, Paul Kruger, is shown on the front and because the country's currency is the South African Rand. Of course, another defining quality of these coins is their gold properties. Because or the gold mines found in South Africa, these coins are one of the many ways of increasing gold investing. Each proper Kruggerand contains 22 karats of gold alloy.

The reverse side of the coin depicts a springbok, a gazelle-like animal found in the country.
9. See that crate over there? I need you to grab some hollow-points from inside and pass them to me. What am I asking you to pass?

Answer: Ammunition

Hollow-points are bullets with a ridge or hole formed in their tip in order to maximize damage upon impact with a target. Many countries actually outlaw this bullet or place it under severe restrictions due to its brutal capabilities.
I must not be the only one to ask to "pass the ammunition". Frank Loesser wrote "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" in 1942, the Dixie Chicks sang the same line in "Sin Wagon" in 1999, and Serj Tankian of System of a Down used the title for a song on his debut solo album, "Elect the Dead" in 2007.
10. See the little guy over there? Yeah. Pass him to me. Don't worry, I've got gloves enough for myself. What animal am I telling you to pick up?

Answer: Porcupine

Porcupines are cute little creatures in the rodent family, but as you may notice, they're covered with quills. Although the porcupine is found on a number of continents and will only eat plants, it's commonly seen as a dangerous creature because its spikes are painfully sharp and remove themselves from the creature's body when they strike a predator (only to grow back). Porcupine quills are made of keratin, the same material found in fingernails.
Oh yeah...you'll need gloves.
