Hagiography and Hagiology Trivia Quiz

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was NOT one of the members of the British/Canadian girl group All Saints?

Answer: Kerry Katona

All Saints was founded in 1993 and were most prominent in the UK, where they went on to sing and perform their way to several top-ten singles and over ten million record sales across the world. One of their most popular songs was 'Never Ever' which was based on the popular gospel song 'Amazing Grace', which has been a cited reason as to why it became popular - the familiarity element was present.

Kerry Katona was a short-lived member of another British girl-band called Atomic Kitten, and had no dealings with All Saints. Unfortunately, most people wouldn't refer to her as a 'saint' as she is largely 'famous for being famous', as some celebrities are.
2. The Battle of the Saintes, fought over four days in 1782, was a battle in which of these wars?

Answer: American War of Independence

This battle took place between the French and Great Britain. Wait, but isn't it the 'American' War of Independence? Well, the war originally started out as being Great Britain against America: colonists believed they were being unfairly taxed and banded together to strike back. However, eventually America was aided by France, Netherlands and Spain who all hoped to gain from this conflict.

In the Battle of the Saintes, the French tried to take Jamaica from British control, but failed. This was a naval battle and was won quickly when the British ships broke the line of the French ships. However, the pressure of multiple countries on the British military resources led to them signing the Treaty of Paris in 1783, and this was most generous to America who gained territory and independence.
3. 'The Saint' was a movie released in 1997. Which actor known for his roles in 'Top Gun' and 'Batman Forever' played the role of Simon Templar within this movie?

Answer: Val Kilmer

'The Saint' was based on the character of Simon Templar created by the author Leslie Charteris. The main character was not actually called Simon Templar, but made his nickname based on a mash-up of the Samaritan mage Simon Magus, and the character's love of the Knights Templar order. Unfortunately, 'The Saint' was not held sacred by its many critics, and many of the critical reviews panned it for being over-produced and lacking in credibility.

Val Kilmer has played characters in over sixty movies although his acting roots lay in stage performing. He took on his role in 'The Saint' after his stint as Bruce Wayne in 'Batman Forever' (1995) and has played a mixture of comedic and more serious roles.
4. 'Saints Row' was a video game released in 2006, and has had sequels released since. Which genre of game does 'Saints Row' fall under?

Answer: Action-Adventure

In 'Saints Row', a nameless protagonist is drawn into a gang war and has to help the Saints bring down the other gangs and control the fictional city of Stilwater. How unsaintly indeed. 'Saints Row' is largely set in an open world so the player can explore and control their playing experience.

The game's action-adventure elements include the player's ability to move around freely on foot or in vehicles, and the environment can be explored at the player's leisure. Although the player can undertake quests and engage in combat, this is up to the player and is not enforced in a linear pattern.
5. Saint was a lesbian character from the energetic, edgy comedy series called 'Sugar Rush' which originally aired in the UK from 2005-6. Which of these British actresses played the role of Saint?

Answer: Sarah-Jane Potts

The main storyline of 'Sugar Rush' was that a young teenaged lesbian called Kim was on a quest for love. In series 2, Saint first met Kim and they had chemistry, and eventually became a couple. This was not without difficulty as Kim had romantic feelings for her best friend, Sugar, despite her being heterosexual. In the end, Sugar gave Kim her blessing to go live with Saint.

Sarah-Jane Potts has played several minor roles in television as well as Saint. In 2011, she took on the role of Eddi McKee in 'Holby City', a continuing hospital drama.
6. The SAINT computer software is used for what purpose?

Answer: To search for network vulnerabilities

SAINT, in this case, is an acronym which stands for System Administrator's Integrated Network Tool. It searches for vulnerabilities in networks. These may be exploited by attackers who may try to gain unauthorised access to the network, obtain sensitive information from it or attack the network. If vulnerabilities are found, then the network administrator can undertake steps to protect against these vulnerabilities.

A 'saintly' program indeed.
7. Featuring the perhaps contradictory song 'Hell', 'Sainthood' was an album released in 2009 by which Canadian female rock duo?

Answer: Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara formed their indie rock band in 1995 and 'Sainthood' was their sixth studio album. So, they endured the test of time like any 'saint' has. They are identical twins who write their own songs and can play the guitar and piano. 'Sainthood' achieved a respectable fourth place in the Canadian Albums chart, and was nominated for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize, which celebrates Canadian albums based on their artistic merit and not on whether they sold well or not.
8. Keeping in mind the theme of this quiz, what is the name of Scotland's oldest university?

Answer: University of St Andrews

The University of St Andrews is situated in the town of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. It is one of the oldest English-speaking universities, third to Oxford and Cambridge. The town, and by association the university, was named after Saint Andrew the apostle who was considered the founder of the first church of Byzantium.

The university was founded in 1410 and it initially grew quickly and successfully. However, in the 18th and 19th century, only around 100 people were studying there which threatened its survival. At the end of the 19th century, it merged with University College in Dundee which helped bring it back to strength as it was seen as popular to send one's child to the oldest Scottish university, and this strength remained in the 20th century.
9. Sadly, a Catholic saint will never get to enjoy their sainthood. This is because one of the requirements of becoming canonised as a saint is that the saint-to-be is already dead.

Answer: True

In the Catholic faith, a saint is one who has lived a life of almost perfect virtue. The decision to make someone a saint is not taken lightly, as an objective look at the person's life achievements is required. It often takes several decades to officially canonise someone.

The person must be a role model of Catholic virtues, but they must also have been responsible for two miracles after death. This sounds impossible, but in Mother Teresa's case, for example, it is said that a Mother Teresa medallion was considered to have healed someone's injured ribs, and that Mother Teresa had appeared in a girl's dream to inform her that her mother's cancer was cured.
10. You or I could also be saints... if we went to a certain place. Which Atlantic Ocean island nation's inhabitants have been nicknamed as 'Saints'?

Answer: Saint Helena

Saint Helena is named after Saint Helena of Constantinople, who lived from around 250 to 330 AD. She was famed for finding Christian relics and was sainted for her piety.

Saint Helena is a volcanic island and had a population of 4255 according to the 2008 census. It is one of the most isolated places in the world, over a thousand miles from any significant landmass and is a British Overseas Territory along with similarly isolated Atlantic islands, Ascension and Tristan de Cunha. As a British Overseas Territory, it is not part of the United Kingdom but is under the jurisdiction of it, although it is mostly self-governed.
