1. The big political hot potato in the UK in early 2013 came when meat from which animal was discovered in many supermarkets' frozen beefburgers?

Answer: Horse

Some supermarkets found that Irish supplied beefburgers contained large amounts of horsemeat. The British government ordered a full investigation and results indicate that the problem extends to meat imported from countries such as France, Ireland and Romania. Anyone getting the trots should see their doctor.
2. The band Hot Chocolate had many chart hits but only one number one and that was achieved in the UK. What was their only number one?

Answer: So You Win Again

The song "You Sexy Thing" charted at number three in the USA in 1975, their highest placing in the US charts. Lead singer Leroy Brown released several solo singles such as "Emmeline". In 2003 he was awarded the MBE for services to pop music.
3. At which place, now an amusement park, did Charles Feltman set up the first "hot dog stand" in the mid 19th century?

Answer: Coney Island

According to the article "Coney Island: Food & Dining" by Jeffrey Stanton, Charles Feltman developed the sausage in a roll to help make best use of cramped working conditions at his pie stall at Coney Island. The term "hot dog" some claim to be derived from the German dachshund dog as Feltman himself was German.
4. The word "hot" in British and American slang can refer to three of the following choices. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Titanic

The word "hot" meaning recently stolen may be derived from the term "too hot to handle". In the childrens parlour game "Hide the thimble" the child would be told that he/she was hot if close by the object being hunted. "Hot" is the common parlance for the quality known by scientists as pungency with regard to spicy food. The Titanic hit an iceberg and sank.
5. Which 2007 film won the Taurus Award in 2008 for the stunt category "Hardest Hit"?

Answer: Hot Rod

The Taurus Awards are given annually in relation to film stunts. The stunt was performed by Lars Grant in "Hot Rod" and was a ramp-to-ramp jump over a mail truck with a moped. On take off, the ramp broke. The stuntman landed upside down and backwards on the catch ramp, landing him on his neck and shoulders on the pavement.
6. Apricot, Aurora and Anaheim are all varieties of what hot food?

Answer: Chillies

Anaheim and Apricot are fairly mild varieties of chilli. The Aurora is much hotter. Chorizo is a Spanish sausage and may well contain chilli in some cases. Haggis is Scotland's traditional dish of offal, lights and oatmeal. Curry has overtaken fish and chips as Britain's national dish.
7. In which state of the USA is the Hot Springs National Park?

Answer: Arkansas

Many states including California, South Dakota and North Carolina have geothermal hot springs but the Hot Springs National Park is in Arkansas. The springs attract tourists who want to bathe in them and sip the water in the belief that it is good for health.
8. In which of the following languages is "calor" the translation for "heat"?

Answer: Spanish

"Calor gas" is a brand name used in the UK for portable gas used for barbecues or when camping. One equivalent in the USA is "camping gaz". Calor is also the word for heat in Portuguese. The word thermótita is the Greek word for heat. Hitze is the German word for heat. Hetta is Swedish for heat.
9. What medical term can also be used to describe a "hot flush"?

Answer: Hot flash

Hot flashes or hot flushes are sweats usually experienced as part of the menopause. Delirium tremens is associated with withdrawal from alcolhol addiction. Stewart-Treves syndrome is a cancer related malignancy. Podagara ia another name for gout.
10. If an astronomer is looking for the hottest star in the universe, on which of the following colours would he/she most likely be concentrating?

Answer: Blue

The rule of thumb seems to be that the hotter the star, the shorter its wavelength. So the colder stars are red and the hottest stars are blue in colour.
There is doubt as to which is the hottest star in the universe but the Eta Carinae (nebula) is thought by scientists to be almost 200 times larger than our own sun with a surface temperature of some 36,000-40,000 Kelvin. Kelvin equals Celsius plus 273.15 degrees. Yep, rather hot!
