Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with an easy one. Who played 'Tattoo' on television's "Fantasy Island"?

Answer: Hervé Villechaize

Villechaize also played 'Nick Nack' in 1974's "The Man With the Golden Gun", but he had an up-and-down career. According to one of his employees, he spent his last years drinking too much and watching "Fantasy Island" reruns while swearing at the screen.
2. "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" are the two later novels in Swedish author Stieg Larsson's 'Millennium Trilogy', a trio of books completed before he died in 2004. The first book is called what?

Answer: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", the first book starring Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander, won Sweden's Glass Key Award for best crime novel of the year. The New York Times didn't like it much, though; Alex Berenson said that the story is "boring and implausible, relying heavily on lazy e-mail exchanges between characters."
3. Which Tennessee Williams play opened on Broadway in 1951?

Answer: The Rose Tattoo

"The Rose Tattoo" won Tony Awards for Eli Wallach (as Alvaro Mangiacavallo) and Maureen Stapleton (as Serafina Delle Rose), and it was made into a movie in 1955, starring Burt Lancaster and Anna Magnani.
4. The author of "White Fang" and "The Call of the Wild" once said "Show me a man with a tattoo and I'll show you a man with an interesting past". Who is this writer?

Answer: Jack London

Jack London received approximately 600 rejection slips before he sold his first story. He had been a gold miner, an oyster pirate, a worker for the California Fish Patrol and a hobo before he found success in the realm of the written word.
5. This description occurs in an American masterpiece: "This tattooing had been the work of a departed prophet and seer of his island, who, by these hieroglyphic marks, had written out on his body a complete theory of the heavens and the earth..." What book does the tattooed Queequeg appear in?

Answer: Moby Dick

Queequeg is a harpooner on board Ahab's 'Pequod', and a great one. At the end of the book, his coffin (which he built for himself) saves Ishmael's life. There's also a submarine named the Queequeg in "A Series of Unfortunate Events".
6. Which naturalist and theorist wrote "Not one great country can be named, from the polar regions in the north to New Zealand in the south, in which the aborigines do not tattoo themselves" in 1871's "The Descent of Man"?

Answer: Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born on the same day--February 12, 1809. Darwin is best known for his "On the Origin of Species", but he was a very prolific writer, publishing such works as "The Power of Movement in Plants" and "The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms".
7. One brother has "Jake" tattooed across the fingers of his left hand. The other brother has "Elwood" tattooed across the fingers of both hands. Who are these guys?

Answer: The Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers formed as a band on "Saturday Night Live" in 1978, and the movie came out in 1980, directed by John Landis. The finger tattoos echo Robert Mitchum's 'love' and 'hate' tattoos from 1955's "The Night of the Hunter".
8. Who sang "I don't know the reason/ I stayed here all season/ Nothin to show but this brand new tattoo" on 1977's "Margaritaville"?

Answer: Jimmy Buffett

"But it's a real beauty/ A Mexican cutie/ How it got here I haven't a clue". The song is Buffett's most popular, and he's licensed the name to a variety of products, including Margaritaville Tequila, Margaritaville Frozen Seafood and Margaritaville margarita mix (of course!)
9. In January of 2008, Harris Interactive took a poll. How many American adults had at least one tattoo then?

Answer: 14%

Pew, in 2006, determined that 40% of Americans between the ages of 26-40 have a tattoo. And those Guns N' Roses guys DO have a lot of tats themselves. But the latest number for all adult Americans was 14%.
10. Which British rock band released an album called "Tattoo You" in 1981?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Stones released it so that they'd have an album to promote on their American and European tours in '81 and '82. "Start Me Up", "Waiting on a Friend" and "Hang Fire" all hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with "Start Me Up" reaching #2 in 1981.
