Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1996 the Tyco Toy Company introduced a "tickle me" doll based on a "Sesame Street" character. What Muppet character was it?

Answer: Elmo

Elmo was a doll that if squeezed would chortle. If squeezed three times in a row, he would laugh and shake. Parents fought over this doll to purchase him for Christmas. They paid as much as USD$1,500 for the USD$28.99 toy. Jim Henson created the Muppets of which Elmo was a member.
2. Where does the word 'tickle' come from?

Answer: tikelen (Middle English) to touch lightly

The origin of the word 'tickle' comes from 'tickelen', a Middle English word meaning to touch lightly. All of the other choices are completely made up, with apologies to the native language speakers.
3. The tickling reflex evolved from a protection against bugs.

Answer: True

Gargalesthesia, which is the sensation of surprise caused by tickling protects against crawling animals and insects. The most ticklish parts of the body are the areas that are highly vulnerable to injury.
4. Why can't you tickle yourself?

Answer: You anticipate the location of the tickle.

Charles Darwin stated that if tickling is to be effective, you can't know in advance the precise point of the tickle. He believed that this is why you cannot tickle yourself. Some people are able to stimulate the roof of their mouth with their tongue but an external tickle is not very effective.
5. Can you be tickled to death?

Answer: Yes

Joost Meerloo, a laugh researcher, stated that it's possible to die laughing. He tells about a method of torture used by the Romans. A person is tied to a board and his feet are dipped in salt water. A goat then licks the victim's feet which drives the person crazy with laughter killing him.
6. Is there any way to be tickled to laughter without another person present?

Answer: Yes

If you use a robotic machine which randomly moves over your body and tickles, it can have the same effect as another person doing the tickle.
7. Which one of the following statements about tickling was theorized by Charles Darwin?

Answer: They all were.

Charles Darwin had many theories about tickling. He believed that tickling causes laughter through the anticipation of pleasure. If you tickle a child without any advanced warning the child will not enjoy it but if anticipated they would laugh in advance. For a tickle to be effective, you must not know the precise point of stimulation in advance.
8. In the cartoon "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" there was a villain who would use tickling as a form of interrogation. Who was he?

Answer: Don Turtelli

Don Turtelli was a minor villain. He captured enemies and tied them to a chair. He would then tickle the soles of their feet with a feather until they gave away their secrets.
9. Why do child physiologists define tickling as a major bonding activity between parents and children?

Answer: Both of these.

Chimps tickle each other during play the same way human children do.
10. There was a 'Star Trek' story about tiny tickle parasites.

Answer: True

'To Starve a Fleaver' was a 'Star Trek' audio story for children written by Alan Dean Foster. The ship was overrun with parasites called Meegees that fed on humor. If the host wasn't happy they moved around and tickled them to get them to laugh. The Enterprise crew finally figured out that if they thought unhappy thoughts the Meegees would starve to death.
