Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which guitarist wrote the song "Smoke on the Water", performed originally by Deep Purple?

Answer: Ritchie Blackmore

Ritchie Blackmore is the guitarist for the band Deep Purple and is one of its original members. "Smoke on the Water" is one of the band's most famous songs. It debuted in 1972 on the "Machine Head" album. The song is well known for its guitar riff which was called one of the greatest riffs in music history by "Q", the popular music magazine.
2. Aside from chicken, what is the main ingredient in the dish chicken biryani?

Answer: Jasmine rice

Biryani is a class of rice dish popular in Indian cooking, which has different ingredients in various regions. All include rice, which is what the name implies - it has its roots in one of two different Persian words meaning rice or fry. So basically Indian fried rice! The protein used is included in the dish's name, and can be chicken, lamb, beef, goat, even egg.
3. In the original 1913 orbital model by Niels Bohr, what would a nitrogen atom's shells look like?

Answer: Two electrons in the first, five in the second shell

Bohr's original shell model, introduced in 1913, together with Ernest Rutherford, only postulated circular shells - the difference of s, p, d and f orbitals was not yet known at that time. Thus, the Bohr model simply predicts two plus five, even though current nuclear physics does emphasize the important difference between the various orbital types.
4. The appendix, the pituitary gland, the stomach and the liver are all found in the human body. Which of them is generally considered a vestigial organ?

Answer: Appendix

A vestigial organ is one which does not seem to provide a useful function, but which may have done so in the past, as it seems to correspond to an organ in another species which does have a useful function. The appendix is such an organ. There is debate, however, as to whether it may actually serve some purpose of which we are simply not aware at this time.
5. Which word, roughly synonymous to "enemy", is the title of a 1989 Isaac Asimov novel?

Answer: Nemesis

"Nemesis" is not only the title of the novel but also the star in whose vicinity it takes place. The plot follows the Fisher family as they contemplate the future of Erythro, a world that could possibly take a human colony but is currently inhabited by a collective consciousness made up of bacteria.

The novel also uses the Nemesis star as a threat to the solar system, a claim made in various real-world doomsday predictions.
6. Where is artist Edvard Munch's coffin buried?

Answer: Oslo, Norway

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian artist best known for creating "The Scream", the notorious painting that has been stolen on several occasions. Munch died in 1944 when Nazi Germany occupied his beloved Norway. He spent the last few years of his life in fear that the Nazis would steal works (some of them were indeed stolen) and hid many of his paintings away.

When he died, he received an elaborate funeral organized by Nazis, giving rise to a theory that Munch was actually a Nazi sympathizer or collaborator.
7. What is one of the names for the colorful hat typically worn by court jesters?

Answer: Cap and bells

Cap and bells come in a few different forms but they are all very colorful and have bells at the end of bells. The cloth "sleeves" that come out of the hat are called horns and a double horn cap and bells has two horns, one on each side left and right.

Another variety is called the donkey which has one horn in front and one in the back that looks like a tail. Cap and bells is also called a fool's cap or a jester hat.
8. Which river is the largest that flows into Lake Baikal?

Answer: Selenga

The Selenga River is the largest river that flows into Lake Baikal, bringing an estimated 50% of the lake's total volume of water. Approximately 992 kilometers in length, the river flows through Mongolia and Russia before reaching Lake Baikal and deposits 935 cubic meters of water per second into the oldest freshwater lake in the world.
9. If you wanted to listen to the minuet of Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" from a vintage 78 RPM vinyl record with two movements on each side, where would you have to put down your stylus?

Answer: At the edge of the B side

Like in nearly all classical sonatas and symphonies, the minuet is the third movement, thus you need to find the third track. With two tracks per side, this means you'll want to start your playback at the beginning of the B side. Unlike CDs, vinyl records are played from the outside towards the center, so you need to place your stylus at the edge.

While not Hi-Fi quality, well-kept 78 RPM recordings of chamber music played on an antique gramophone can be quite a pleasure to listen to - if you should ever get the opportunity, take an hour of your time to enjoy music as it was played a hundred years ago!
10. True or False: Copper etching would be a good medium to work in if you wanted to produce some chiaroscuro art.

Answer: False

Chiaroscuro requires strong contrasts between the bright ("chiaro") and dark ("oscuro") parts of an image. A copper etching, however, will produce fine lines that combine to form halftone images with relatively low contrast. If you want to produce chiaroscuro work by directly working on a printing plate, you should prefer a woodcut that will let you print boldly colored areas.
